Odd question: is Wesleyan 'grubby'?

'Scuse the peculiarity of this question, but I've heard that the Wesleyan campus is 'not too clean or well-maintained'. Any comments?

The Wesleyan campus is actually pretty clean, especially compared to a certain school in Pennsylvania whose name I won't mention.

I think that perception is left over from years ago. Apparently our last president did quite a lot to clean the campus up. Anyway, it certainly has never seemed grubby to me.

when i visited it did not seem grubby at allllllll. very nice actually.

Wow - we were there a few weekends ago and had the complete opposite reaction. I even remember describing the campus as "tidy" to someone. Granted, we did not see inside dorms, but admissions and the buildings we saw, from the outside at least, were beautiful, neat, and well maintained.

We were visiting our D this weekend. The Fall foliage was gorgeous and the campus was in mint condition. Over the last two years we have been going to the campus for pre-frosh visits and now that she is a freshman the campus keeps getting better. Her freshman dorm was renovated a few years ago and is fantastic. There is a brand new student center etc. So I don't know where the "grubby" word was started but it is the opposite of reality. She loves Wes!!

Dana's Dad

Eh.. I thought it was grubby. I visited in Feb. '06, and they were doing a lot of construction.. so I assume that was why I thought so. I also did not have a positive experience with my host.

Now I'm at Trinity.

Bantam, too bad. You obviously have a misconstrued perception of the Wesleyan campus, and your host probably wasn't a great resource.

I think one of the other problems is visiting in February, which isn't a very nice month to visit anywhere - there's been too much winter for too long. Visit in late March and your impression will be completely different, wherever you're visiting :) (if it's someplace with seasons, I suppose)

Hope you're enjoying Trinity, though, Bantam!

The main campus is one big playing field and spectator hill; it gets a lot of use. NESCAC football games are played there every other Saturday from September through mid-November. By Spring, there is a baseball diamond cut into the sod which stays through the rest of the year (a bit of history: there was once also a track that, thankfully, was moved once the new gym opened.) Foss Hill itself is about an acre and a half of nothing but grass and hosts picnics, concerts, and mass gatherings of all sorts. Considering the high usage I think B&G does a good job of keeping the place clean.

Was just up at Wes for parents weekend. We were all over the campus for three days, in brand-new buildings and old, science and humanities classrooms, in concert halls and dorm lounges, and several food venues. Even a frat house. All kinds of nooks and crannies. The whole school was in amazing shape, not just clean but clearly beautifully maintained and with first-class facilities from the classroom projectors to the foosball tables. Melman: Go ahead and visit and see what you think.
