Odd situation. JHU, Tufts, Wesleyan, Amherst

<p>I'm an asian male from NJ so that's probably not helping my case haha. I have safeties of course, but I don't think I need to mention them because they're safeties.
Objective:
• SAT I (Single-sitting, first try): 2320
• SAT breakdown: M=800 , CR=770, W=750, 12 essay
• SAT II: US History (800), Math II (800)
• Unweighted GPA: 3.6ish after first semester senior year? school doesn't send unweighted. LOTS of B's, junior year showed barely an improvement in letter grades from sophomore year, but my guidance counselor is adding that there was a medical issue I had to deal with that hindered me...she won't get detailed enough about what it isthough just because I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with it being shared. Hopefully they wont assume its bs. I'm completely fine now and will get straight A's senior year.
• Weighted GPA: 4.1ish after first semester senior year? (went from all academic classes to all honors to all APs so increasing difficulty of classes each year )
• Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): school DNR but I think I'd be up there since it's a large class and I have the most rigorous courseload possible according to my gc
• AP (place score in parenthesis): Euro History (4), Lang (4), Calc (5), Macro (4) :(
• Senior Year Course Load: AP Stat, AP Lit, AP Comparative Gov, AP Spanish, AP Studio Art, bio regular but counselor will explain that i was eligible for honors and requested it, but it didn't fit in with the rest of my schedule
• Rigor of Schedule: most Challenging
• Major Awards (USAMO, Intel, NMSF etc.): Top 2% in a national art competition, scholastic art gold (top 10%) and silver keys (top 15-20%) for my region, state winner for a national constitution essay contest, Blue ribbon at State public speaking contest, Honorable delegate at ILMUNC,
Minor award: 2nd Place at a local art fair where I competed against Art Professionals in the area
Subjective:
• School Extracurriculars:
Art Magazine (Co-President)
Model UN (Vice President but did a LOT to change the club, including the hosting of practice conferences which I created. I wrote out entire topic guides and directed the committees. Elections are such popularity contests :c)
Amnesty International (Vice President)
School news writer for school newspaper for 4 years
Politics Club (President)
• Other (Instrumental, Athletic):
-Private art lessons throughout high school
-was on managing committee for a charity art show last year
-Cofounder of Arts Club for a large county organization. I've given art workshops to people from the ages of 6-25, helped organize art shows, and trips to museums with the club.
• Job/Work Experience:
-Started my own business for two summers to make money (ended after soph year...should i even mention this business at all?)
-intern for a local congresswoman
-youth delegate to a un conference through an ngo
• Volunteer/Community service:
-a little less than 200 hours
• Summer Activities: organizing guest speakers for one of my clubs, charity art show, took science courses and skipped a level of science to be on the track of the most advanced kids at my school
• Essays: made my friend cry hen she read it. I was pretty conflicted over it, since i thought the topic was risky, and someone told me the admissions officers wouldn't like it because it was too sad, but i really did think it ended on a positive note. unique experience; I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first time they read about this. people told me it was touching and showed a lot of growth and maturity
• Teacher Recommendations: One is from a teacher who thinks I'm extremely proactive, other will be generic probably but will hopefully mention my growth and how hard i worked in her class
• Counselor Rec: probably glowing since she knows a lot about what goes on with my activities and loves me. said she'd be giving the "highest recommendation" she possibly can give
• Additional Rec: private art teacher; talked about how i was an independent thinker and how my art is unique
• Intended Major: undecided. Probably visual arts or econ
-Attaching an art supplement which should be pretty good
Oh, and in addition to JHU, Tufts, Wesleyan, Amherst, I applied to schools like Georgetown and Brown, but I know those are even worse in terms of crapshoot-ness so no need to bother chancing me for those ><</p>

<p>***my bad, it was top .2%, not 2% for the other art contest i mentioned. Dunno if it was as self selective as scholastic though</p>

<p>You are qualified and for once it is nice to see an asian who is not a boring school robot. I would think you could get into any of the schools you mentioned. </p>

<p>I second @mandalorian! You rock!</p>

<p>Thanks so much guys, that’s so sweet. you don’t think my low unweighted gpa will kill my chances though? </p>

<p>I don’t think your UW GPA will matter that much if you keep an upward trend during the entire duration of high school years. Your test scores are right in range. IMO, you have a decent chance at Tufts and Wesleyan. Amherst is a low reach, while JHU is a high match given that you are not applying for Bio-related majors. </p>

<p>Brown is indeed a crapshoot, as is the case with Gtown(Gtown is more predictable, though). However,if u can differentiate yourself amidst a pool of mediocre 2400s thru your essays, interviews and other intangibles, I think you stand a chance.</p>

<p>Good luck!</p>

<p>Comments on my app?<a href=“URGENT HELP ! Am I really doomed to lose schooling or go to a community college? <p>Interesting that you’d say that; at my school last year the one guy who got into brown last year (it isn’t that popular at my school) was a surprise (not stats/academic/qualification wise, just personality wise I guess). Georgetown rejected a girl who got into Princeton. Then they accepted someone who was rejected from uva. It was pretty weird haha. I’ll chance you back later today when I have more time,</p>

<p>Likey at all of them. Amherst is the biggest reach but you still have a very good shot. </p>

<p>Oh goodness, well thank you. Unfortunately I might be receiving one b+ on my midyear report ( long story but it’s not deserved. I might be able to convince the teacher to change it because they made an unfair policy change)</p>

<p>With your stats, I’d say it’s a low reach/high match for JHU. I honestly don’t know much about the admissions offices for the other universities you’re applying to. Thanks for chancing me though.</p>

<p>Your ECs and other non academic aspects are very impressive and definitely make you stand out, even amongst the applicants with stronger academics. That is probably the most important part of an application, standing out, so i dont think you’ll have much of a problem for these schools.</p>

<p>My thread (chance please): <a href=“Chances for Vanderbilt, UNC, NYU, UF, and Duke? - Chance Me / Match Me! - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1610985-chances-for-vanderbilt-unc-nyu-uf-and-duke-p1.html&lt;/a&gt; </p>

<p>I think your medical problem will probably excuse you a bit from the low GPA! From what I’ve seen, admins really dig really personal essays and your really sounds unique so thats a plus. The ECs are good and you show alot of initiative and leadership. Honestly, I think you’ve got a pretty good chance at all 4 :)</p>

<p>bump because results are coming soon and I’m so nervous</p>
