How many classes should freshmen take each semester? What about upperclassmen?

to graduate in 4 years with about 130 credits(the standard number) it should be 16 credits per term.

But then again it totaly depends on your major.

Is it a good idea to take minimum credits in the first semester of college and then maximum credits for the rest of college years to get intermediate honors?

Oh, btw, I want to be pre-med. I understand the medical schools look at MCAT and GPA. Do they also look at academic awards?

I think it's a good idea to take 12-13 units first semester/quarter to get used to the way things work and then take the average 15-16 for the remaining quarters. DON'T take maximum credits (~22 in most cases) after taking one easy quarter. The only time you should take that many units is if there is scheduling conflicts and you have to take those courses all at once. Focus on your keeping your gpa good, don't spread yourself thin.

One of my friends stretched himself to the limits to graduate in 3 years because he convinced himself he was going to get into grad school anyway because a lot of grad students here had low undergrad gpa's. Unfortunatly for my friend, he's been rejected from every UC school he's applied to for the past two years, and is now resorting to applying at the CA state schools.

you won't get academic awards if your gpa sucks ;)

At my school, it's 12-18 credits allowed in a semester. Below 12 is less than full time, above 18 requires special permission from a dean. I took 15 and 13 my first year, and I'm taking 15 in the fall. To graduate approximately on time, I'll have to take 15-16 every semester which is doable. Push yourself any beyond that and you'll probably have trouble keeping up and you might have to drop a class or two.

15 credits is 4-5 classes usually depending on the credit hours assigned to each class. I have 5 classes with 15 hours for the fall (chem 3 hrs, chem lab 1 hr, french 4 hrs, world lit 3 hrs, product development 4 hrs [class for my major]).

I'll be a frosh this august and I have been advised to take 4-5 classes each semester with at least 2 of them being science classes (im a biochem major) but no more than 3 being science classes.. also I was advised not to take more than 2 classes that have labs unless it is absolutely necessary..

Because we're on trimesters at my school, we take 3 classes per term, but I think having done 9 by the end of the year is a good amount even if its divided into semesters of 4 classes and 5.

I find that 5 is just about right. I took six a few times and it got difficult sometimes during the term, usually there was one class that ended up getting ignored. And I only took 4 one term, and ended up with class 2 days a week and nothing to do most of the time...seemed really wasteful.

it depends on your school, your major, and their requirements. i take ~17 credits a semester which ends up being ~5-6 classes, as a science major.

depends on the school. i took 18 credits, which was 5 classes. some classes are 3 credits, some are 4.
