Agree. If this was the expected behavior, they need to revert to the “mistake” behavior because it was better. Perhaps tech team needs encouragement.
So for ten years it was working wrong? Hard to believe.
On any generic page of any generic web site, what do users want when hitting the Back button? It seems reasonable (to me) to expect to see the previous page as previously seen, so maybe the tech team reverted to “expected” behavior that is actually annoying to some of us.
Well, it isn’t “expected” if it wasn’t that way in the past.
I like it refreshed because it factors in what I’ve already looked at and points out what is then new posts. It was a better and more user friendly way of using the site.
Downgrading the experience to the end user shouldn’t be the goal nor should it be viewed as “expected”.
Begs the question of whether the systems people don’t know how to fix it to what it was or are unwilling to do so?
^ or just what they do think is priority.
The previous automatic refresh behavior probably increased load on the servers, since they had to send updated pages each time, even if the user did not want them. It also increased data use, which could be an issue for some mobile device users.
The current behavior without automatic refresh resembles most other web sites (particularly forums).
How do you refresh a page on a phone? The only choices on my Android are the back button on the bottom of the thread (which doesn’t reset the # of unread posts), the back button on my phone (which doesn’t reset them either), the mortarboard at the top of the screen which takes me to the 1st page of threads (not really helpful if I’m on page 7 of 10), and sometimes a little back arrow on the top left of the page (which takes me to the first page of the forum the thread was posted in). Where do I find the button that will refresh my screen and take me back to the page of threads I was reading? If I’m on thread 1 of page 7 I’d like to be able to return to page 7 and have it update which thread I just read (reset the # of unread posts), but I don’t understand how to do that. If it’s any help, I have a Samsung ZTE. Thank you.
See post 38. I do use my back arrow on the cell or tablet.
If a thread had one new post and I read that, now go back to the list of posts:
I now learn I have one new post. Fine. Except I go to read that post and
- it’s not new. * Boo.
Both Chrome and Firefox for Android show three little dots in the upper right corner. Tap those. You will see various options, one of which is a ⟳ (reload symbol character). Tap that to reload the page.
Thank you, @ucbalumnus. Now that I know where it is I’ll try it out.
