Colgate, Hamilton, Williams

Let's see, closest to NYC. Uh, that would be Barnard. After that: Vassar (1.5 - 2 hours), Wesleyan, Trinity, Swarthmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr (all in the 2-hour+ range). Colgate and Hamilton are in the 4-hour+ range.

Rural/outdoorsy: Williams, Middlebury, Bowdoin (not rural but outdoorsy), Grinnell, and others.

ny is a pretty big state... do you mean nyc? or just anywhere near the state line?

I mean anywhere 2-4 hrs radius from NYC would be ideal but would consider further for a really good fit school.

Just to give you an idea of how broad this is; to the south, Baltimore is 3 1/2 hours; to the northeast, Boston is about 4 hours; further west, southern vermont is less than 4 hours; to the west, Pennsylvania, possibly Penn State, I know Bucknell is 3 hours; Southwest, Philly is 2 hours away.

From this view, there are scores of schools to choose from. You need to give a lot more information about who you are and what you are looking for. Geography is the least of your concerns.
