Do current students have any wisdom regarding the off-campus apartments run by ResLife? What are the pros/cons vs. the upperclassmen dorms? Why are they cheaper than the dorms?

My D lived on an on-campus dorm all four years. She was just too busy and didn’t have any interest in cleaning her place or cooking for herself. She has lived in the Village the past two years and has really liked it.

Why is off campus housing cheaper - don’t know exactly. Dorms have someone who comes in and cleans the restrooms, changes the light bulbs, etc.

A moderate amount of people move off-campus Junior year, but it is more common Senior year… I think there are by far more people that live off-campus than on-campus Senior year.

Advantages: cheaper, St Louis actually has a really nice housing stock, walkable areas for shops/restaurants/etc if you live on the Loop or CWE, and a sense of independency.

Disadvantages: all that comes with being more independent?

I’d choose Village over off campus. Much closer to campus, food is close by, etc.

While on campus is more expensive, you have to buy your own bed and mattresses for off campus, etc.

Over the past few years, demand for on-campus housing for Juniors and Seniors has greatly increased, and some number of people who originally think they want to live on-campus end up getting placed in off-campus, university-owned apartments. These apartments are less expensive because you’re not paying a premium for location; also, cable is not included (it is on-campus), and cleaning services are not provided.

I was one of those who went into the housing lottery with the full intent of living on-campus; I ended up getting placed in an off-campus, university-owned apartment. Now that I’ve actually taken the time to learn about the differences between on-campus and off-campus, I could not be more excited to live off campus!! My two-person apartment for next year has a living room, a dining room, and a kitchen (with a dishwasher, fridge/freeezer, and microwave included) and will cost me less than the suite I currently live in on the South40. My flatmate and I will each have our own room with FULL XL beds(!!) as well. And best of all, we are ridiculously close to campus.
