Off campus housing/neighborhoods?

I'm looking for input/advice on what neighborhoods/areas are good choices for students at Northeastern. Looking for middle of the road in terms of price and quality. Thanks for any ideas.

As a freshman or upperclassman?

Freshmen (and sophomores?) are required to live on-campus anyways.

sophomores are required to live on campus? someone clarify please :)

Sorry. This is for a grad student.

Ohh okay, just checking. Yes, freshman and sophomores are required to live on campus. I’ll let someone else handle the suggestions :)

Freshman & sophmores aren’t required…

I’m a sophomore and most of my friends moved off campus this year. My good friends a freshman and lives off w an older sibling (he may be considered a commuter however)

I’m not sure about for grad students

Starting with freshmen entering in 2011, freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus unless commuting from their parent’s home.

yeah I’m a sophomore too and it’s not required until the incoming freshmen are sophomores as clarified by Tom :)

Depends what you mean by “middle-of-the-road” price wise, how close you want to be to campus, if you mind living in neighborhoods dominated by undergrads, etc.

Adjacent to campus is symphony/hemenway area, which is almost all undergrads except for a few of the pricier symphony/gainsborough/st stephens apartments. But, it’s pretty expensive. There is a nice section further down hemenway, behind whole foods (ie norway street) that is a little older crowd. Columbus Ave, on the other side of campus, is a little cheaper but also mostly undergrads. Mission Hill is the cheapest NEU neighborhood, and mostly juniors/seniors from NEU, Wentworth, Mass art. It’s more of a neighborhood feel, more space, has some decent food and bars nearby in Brigham circle.

If you’re looking to escape 20 year olds and don’t mind a bit of a hike: Brookline, Allston, or Jamaica Plain are all pretty popular for people mid-20s. They’ll all be a little cheaper than surrounding NEU areas and have lots going on.

Mass ave areas are a little more expensive, but it’s located very central boston, close to campus, and more of a non-undergrad population.

Why did they change the requirement?

Northeastern, and all Boston schools, is under pressure from the City of Boston to house more students on campus. The university has more control of on campus student behavior. Also, it helps to increase a sense of community on campus.

Freshmen or Sophmores aren’t required to live on campus. According to the contract I’m reading only single Freshmen under the age of 21 are. There are some exceptions granted. It looks like you need 30 credit hours as an underage undergraduate to move off-campus.

All that said, no one bothered to inquire about my age when I opted to live off campus my Freshmen year.

@IgnoranceIsBliss: Starting with the freshmen entering in 2011, freshmen and sophomores ARE required to live on campus with a few exceptions. This is a change since you enrolled.

It JUST changed this year, as they already pointed out. People who entered last year (aka any current student) doesn’t have the requirement. Students who enter THIS year (fall 2011 or spring 2012) do have it.

They give exceptions, but this is pretty much the rule. It has been confirmed by admissions several times.
