Off campus housing

I’m an incoming freshman on the waiting list, so I’m looking at off campus housing options. Anyone have any good/bad experiences or information about the places around Auburn?

There are many off-campus apartment options. The price can be very reasonable, or rather expensive, depending on what you are looking for. Previous threads have included specific names of complexes – I will go bump some of these threads up so they appear again. Also, you may choose to live in an off-campus private dormitory. There are a few more options for females in this category than men. Keep an eye out for one of the older threads for specific info. No matter where you live, AU food service will require you to purchase at least a minimal amount of food service credit (I think it was $350.00 per semester for this year for those living OFF-campus). You can add more money to this amount if you choose. On-campus residents must purchase a min. of $900-1000 per semester. They automatically add this cost to your e-bill.

I have a daughter who is accepted at Auburn and we visited today. She is wait listed on housing too #347 :frowning: We looked at off campus privately run dorms today - Greystone (all female) and Cambridge (co-ed floors, yes floors…). Cambridge seemed pretty cool - albeit more expensive than the others. Larger than all of the other dorm rooms we’ve seen; private BA, sink and nice sized closets. Right across the street from the campus. We were told it is usually 95% freshman. Rent includes cafeteria/grill food located by lobby - the food looked pretty decent today - salad bar, hot food or grill. Greystone was substantially cheaper, but much farther away, too quiet, no real kitchen or meal service, and honestly… a little scary on how easy it is to just walk in… even the greystone mansion next door was unlocked… and empty, with a cardinal bird inside trying to get out at the window (no joke).

You might want to check this website out: [Apartments in Auburn, Alabama](http://www.auburnapartmentguide.com)

I was able to use it to find a $340 studio apartment, one block away from campus. It’s definitely not the type of place I’d want to spend the rest of my life in, but it’s cheap, and it’s a roof over my head. Plus, after paying rent and utilities, I have money left over for other stuff.

$340 is a pretty darn good deal for a studio apartment that close to campus. If there are no maintenance issues, then that makes it even better. I only raise that point because D has friend whose apartment experiences some water leakage when it rains – a bit of a bummer.

D has friend who lives in Cambridge. Her only complaint is that it can be rather noisy at times (at night). Other residence halls can get pretty noisy as well – I guess it goes with the territory!
Did you check out the Wittel Dormitory? – privately owned, older (historic) building, not too terribly far from campus – all female. It has a new management group this year, but I think they jacked up the price. This is more like a traditional all-female dorm, with shared baths, a traditional parlor, etc. They have laundry in the building, kitchen, but no food service. D does not know anyone over there, so I can’t add anything else. They do have a website – check out the thread I bumped up for a link, if you are interested.
Also, just east of campus (2 blocks?) is an apartment complex that would definitely be walkable – http://www.two21armstrong.com/</a>
I have no idea about price, but it’s close by, and they could probably place with an available roommate.

Don’t live at Cambridge. You can get a better deal elsewhere. It’s expensive for a single room with a shared bath, the food is AWFUL, and the AC doesn’t always work…big problem in this southern climate. Management stinks too.
There aren’t enough washers/dryers for the number of residents. Our water has been on and off in August. Maintenance is questionable.
