Hey guys,
Since I still haven't received my packet from Cornell (I guess it takes time to get to Eu), and I couldn't really figure it out from the website...
Can freshmen actually be off campus?
I'm going to be in the engineering and the freshmen housing is quite far away. Besides, it seems as you can choose some better housing and that being off-campus has some advantages...
So is that possible, would you advise it, and in general - what do you think about it?
Thx!

I wouldn't advice living off campus because you can meet MANY MANY friends by living on North Campus. Everyone on North Campus is in the same boat as you are so it is much easier to make friends.

I agree. I wouldn't suggest living off campus during your freshman year. Many of the first friends you make are your suitemates and hallmates. Usually during the beginning of freshman year, you hang out with people who live near you, then you meet more people through classes, etc. Even after freshman year, a lot of people are still really good friends with the people they lived with.

I don't think Cornell REQUIRES living on campus for freshmen, but it is almost unheard of to a freshman to live off campus. It really hurts your social opportunities. Also, your orientation groups are assigned by your College and Dorm. Basically, all of orientation week you really are meeting people and a lot of those people you meet are your dormmates. BTW, I'm a freshman in engineering, the walk isn't that bad for me, and will be even better next year when they open the main bridge.

I have one friend who lives off-campus and is a freshman. He definitely isn't as social as other people I know, but I think it's a personal choice, but I would almost advise living on-campus just for the experience. It might be quite a bit more expensive, but I think it's an integral part of the college experience.

Thanks to everyone for their advices.. yes, I guess I'll stay on campus for the freshman year, especially having in mind I'm not from the USA and will be quite lost at first. I was just a bit worried about having so many people around... lol :) I'm a social person, but I have never lived with some many students around me, so it's a bit strange.
