What is there to do off-campus? Where do students go in their offtime or to study or whatever?

bump???

I think no one is answering your question because no one can believe you asked “What is there to do off-campus” about a school in NEW ORLEANS!! LOL. But that aside, there is tons to do. First, you will get a flavor of it from the thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/687971-101-reasons-attend-tulane-university.html

Certainly kids use Audubon Park to study also, besides the obvious places on campus.

Off time there is a significant Greek life at Tulane, so for kids that choose that, their activities are somewhat different from those that don’t, at least for some of their time. Besides that, there is music on campus often (at the Rat, in the auditoriums, on the quad…) and off campus, especially at places on Magazine Street I would guess. Magazine street has lots of shops and restaurants and places geared towards the students. There are also places around Broadway and undoubtedly on other nearby streets, the Boot especially having been around forever.

Of course there are lots of themed university supported organizations and “constructive” activities at Tulane (although personally I consider hanging around in the Rat or at The Boot constructive) and so there is something for everyone. There are also various guest lectures, shows, movies, sports (Tulane is Division 1. It isn’t exactly UNC or Pitt competitively in football or basketball, but the baseball team has always been highly rated along with some of the “minor” sports), etc. And then, of course there is always NEW ORLEANS.

Hopefully that answers your question. Let me add that Tulane ranks highly among student surveys (Princeton Review) taken from hundreds of thousands of students at all universities in areas such as great college town (#13) and happiest students (#10), and I think the latter is not only the off camppus life but also the overall quality and feel of the university.

A lot of students are also very active in community service. Last year the annual outreach Tulane day had to be rescheduled due to the evacuation of New Orleans. Despite it being rescheduled, over two thirds of the students signed up to participate in one of twenty five scheduled service opportunities (my son sorted mardis gras beads for eight hours to be resold for charity- but said he had a lot of fun)

The Community Action Council of Tulane University Students (CACTUS) has a lot of community service activities including tutoring, habitat for humanity, blood drives, paint rallies etc. CACTUS provides transportation to the sites, and you can fit things in around your schedule.

Of course this is just one specific example of the many things students at Tulane do on their time off, but seems to be a very important part of being a student at Tulane.
