Student Life

Hi guys,

I'm a rising senior and I recently got a letter from Tulane University. After looking it up, it looks like a really cool school and I'm thinking about applying. I just wanted the opinion of people that currently attend Tulane about student life and the things you can do around campus. Some specific questions I have are: a) Do people really go into the city or stay on campus? b) How is the school spirit (like is there a large turnout at sports events)? c) How is the party scene? c) Is there a huge Greek life presence?

Thanks!!

Junior at Tulane here. I’ll give you my honest opinion.

a. The campus is in the city of NO and downtown/french quarter is only a few miles away. A lot of people tend to stay on campus most of the time, which is understandable, with school/work/social life all being right there. But there are still a lot of people who go into the city. I probably leave campus once a week to go do something in the city. Some people leave every day, some people almost never leave the “Tulane bubble”. It really depends on the person. The street car (although slow and unreliable) will take you directly to the corner of Canal St. and Bourbon St. (arguably the heart of the city). You can also take a cab, or go by car if you know people who have them. It’s not too hard.
b. Is there a large turnout at sports events? In the past, absolutely not. However, we have a stadium on campus now, so who knows what’ll happen. I believe tickets already sold out for the opening game (I’m currently abroad so I haven’t been keeping up with the Tulane news as much recently.) But just cause the sport turnout isn’t low doesn’t mean there’s no school spirit. People here are very proud of being Tulane students, and even if you walk down McAlister Drive (the main road through campus) you’ll see a lot of people wearing Tulane shirts, and stuff like that.
c. In my opinion the party scene is large and vibrant as a freshman, but gets old pretty fast (probably a good thing… ). To freshman it’s new and exciting, but after awhile you’ll get used to it and settle down. What I loved most about the party scene as a freshman was the diversity of it. The uptown bars, frat parties, dorm parties, bonfires on the levee, sorority date parties, french quarter, mardi gras. It’s extensive. Im sure you already know this but I feel obliged to say it anyways; as fun as the party scene can be, it’s not everything. I think because of the large party scene a lot of other great features of Tulane get overlooked. You hear so much about “The Boot”, but in my opinion there’s hundreds of better places to spend your night.
d. Greek life is large at Tulane. There’s a good amount of fraternities and sororities. But the school is large enough to where you could easily ignore it all without a problem if that’s your thing. Greek life has enough going on year round that theres a good amount of kids who’s entire Tulane career revolves around greek life. But it’s not pervasive at all. It’s very easy to get involved if you want to, and very easy to ignore if you want to.

Hope that helps.
Im sure if you do a search on the forums you’ll find more answers to your questions. Everything you asked has been discussed extensively in previous threads.
