Off-Topic Discussion from "Colleges Crossed Off List or Moved Up After Visiting"

Wesleyan went from the top of the list to off the list for my D19 because of its location. Williams fell down the list too. The vibe of the surrounding town was/is important to both D19 and S23 as both are eager to explore life outside the college bubble.

I keep racking my brain about “too bad it’s in Middletown”. I mean, compared to what? People don’t seem to appreciate what a rarity it is to have a fully functioning municipality within a short walking distance of a college Wesleyan’s size. Sure, it could use an art museum (or two.) But would I rather have that than a modern and well-equipped hospital emergency room literally five blocks from the center of campus? I dunno about that.

My husband and I went to W&L in the 90s when it was more than 90% greek. We’re two of the least likely greek participants ever and we both pledged. My husband dropped out of his frat by his senior year and I barely participated by the end, but it wasn’t an exclusive thing at W&L when we were there, just something everyone did in freshman and sophomore year.

Hi, That was my post. When 90% of your classmates are talking about Georgia-related topics, a Texas student might not know what is up. I went to a Texas university from OOS high school and it was a rough first year when everyone is talking about homecoming and 5A football and you have no idea what that culture is like.

LOL. That’s really great for your student. Other students want to feel at home/ be surrounded by diversity/ etc. Every kid is different. I’m glad yours felt at home in Athens.

I understand you are a fan. But for example my older kids went to school in NYC and DC. I don’t think you can exactly compare the culture, restaurants, term-year job and internship opportunities, the feeling of “being where it all happens”, or even just random “stuff to do on the weekend” to Middletown! Even New Haven has better theater and restaurants and access to NYC.

Are you referring to the Wesleyan in CT? Those Methodists were busy and there is a Wesleyan in half the states in the union.

yes, wesleyan is wesleyan. all the other schools are def not wesleyan.

Iowa Wesleyan, Illinois Wesleyan, Ohio Wesleyan, Oklahoma Wesleyan, et al might disagree. Those crazy Methodists started a lot of schools in the 1800s and early 1900s. Sure, Wesleyan in Middletown, CT is the highest ranked, and probably the “only” Wesleyan to some on the east coast, but to people in the Midwest the other Wesleyans are viable options.

I think @GnarWhail may be pulling your chain a bit.

The geographic modifier is always attached to the others. I’ve never heard anyone refer to any of them as “Wesleyan,” but maybe they do.

If the Methodists were crazy, what are going to say about the Catholics?

Unless you live in GA… then one distinguishes between Wesleyan Univ (CT) and Wesleyan College (GA HWC). I realize that’s being picky :grin:

Fair point. :grinning:

You mean those crazy Jesuits? You can’t swing a cat-o-nine-tails without hitting a Jesuit college.

Yeah, if you want to go visit your cousin who’s going to Loyola, you’d better double-check real closely before buying those plane tickets!

Another “crazy” Methodist here by upbringing. I was from Pennsylvania, now in Virginia. West Virginia Wesleyan, Virginia Wesleyan are the most familiar ones. If someone would tell me their kid was going to Wesleyan, I would assume Wesleyan in Connecticut, unless told otherwise (my kid’s going to Virginia Wesleyan, for instance).

That is a new one for me. :grinning:

We also appreciate small cities but compared to Boulder, another small city where we lived for awhile and still regularly visit, Middletown fell short. Boulder is a bustling place with a thriving foodie and arts scene that sits at the base of the Rockies. It has art museums, festivals galore, and is a year-round playground for outdoorsy types. A lot of places just don’t compare.

My bad. I did not realize you were literally comparing Middletown CT to Washington DC, New York City (and presumably, San Francisco, Anchorage, Montreal, Toronto and a lot of other places I wouldn’t mind being right now.) It’s a shame only one of them has a LAC located off one of its main streets.

But, people don’t need to necessarily compare these things. You like Boulder and preferred it to Middletown. I get it. I’ve been to Boulder because I have a kid in Denver. Great place . I’m sure Middletown works very well for lots of students and families . My 2 kids spent 4 years each in Charlottesville and Blacksburg . Not Boulder but great fits for them!

Can’t say enough good things about Boulder, if you’re a Wesleyan fan!
