Offered the "likely letter route"

I was on the phone with the coach from an Ivy today and we were squaring away plans for my OV this weekend, and he said that if this school remains my #1 after the visit, I should submit all of my application materials to be evaluated for a likely letter.

So, my question is would he suggest the likely letter if he didn't think I was admissible? I was passed by admissions for the OV, but my numbers are pretty average. 3.8 GPA, 32 ACT. Just curious because I am trying not to get my hopes up, but I am just so dang excited. Any information would be so helpful.

Thanks!!

It means he thinks you might, but he can’t say for sure. Only the admissions office can make the final call. This all sounds great, though, JumpHigh. Congrats.

I agree with riverrunner, and I’ll add that the coach probably has a very good idea of what will fly or not fly with the admissions office. I recall you mentioning on another thread that you’re at the top of your class of 500. That, together with a 32, may be “average” for a typical Ivy applicant, but it isn’t average at all for the pool of athletes that Ivy coaches draw from. I believe that this coach sees you as a desirable athlete and an admitable student.

He offers good advice. Enjoy your OV weekend, confirm if this is where you’d like to attend and, if it is, get your app in and let him push admissions for a LL.

Congratulations, good luck, and keep us posted.

Regarding my post above, I just checked and now realize I’ve confused two posters who have similar screen names. Sorry JumpHigh, for the confusion, but it doesn’t change my advice or opinion. If the Ivy coach thinks your 3.8 and 32 are fine that’s great, let’s hope admissions agrees. I think they probably will.

@Sherpa: LOL that’s me. I had to read your post twice because I was like, wow Jumphigh has the EXACT same academic credentials as me!

Very exciting JumpHigh! I agree, sounds as if he has hope. They don’t get unlimited likely letters so he wouldn’t waste his time if you weren’t a “likely” candidate ;-)

Have a great time!

“my question is would he suggest the likely letter if he didn’t think I was admissible?”

jump, ask the coach? you’re going to be a college man (or woman) don’t be shy about asking direct questions, it will not hurt your chances at all, it may even help. But do always be polite…look your coach in the eyes, and always say please and thank you.

and I think you’re in!

Here are a few of my thoughts for what it is worth:

It is ok to have high hopes… but you must still have a great OV … which means meeting teammates and passing muster…

and then you must be ready to turn around your completed application, which includes all essays and recommendations etc…

don’t get hung up on being average… the good news about being average is that you ARE in range!!

So, be prepared to have your eyes opened some this coming weekend… be prepared for any and all reactions, which could include not being as enamored as you currently expect to be…

you may have to be prepared to commit before you expected to be… they may want your completed application next week… make sure you are really ready to commit once your visit is done… if not ready, it is okay to say that you are very appreciative of the visit and you are looking forward to digesting the experience and discussing it with your parents and or other advisors… and that you will get back to the coach in the near future (within a week etc…be prepared with a timeframe already in YOUR mind) so that you do not feel pressured or panic while ending your visit. Perhaps even practice some of these conversations with your parents or coach, so that the first time you say them is not on the OV…

Best wishes and ENJOY the visit…you have earned the right to explore your options… good luck…

Sitting in the airport getting ready to fly home from my OV, and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. I already felt a part of the team and my host was amazing (I hope he reads this haha…which Is a definite possibility). Thanks to everyone here who eased my stress, if only minimally. I fell absolutely in love with the school and committed. I have yet to feel buyers remorse because I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. Good luck to everyone here who is trying to be recruited and the parents here! It has definitely been a roller coaster…

Good for you JumpHigh, glad it all worked out so quickly for you. :-)

Great news!! Did they give you an idea of how many OVs they are hosting and when they can let you know about a likely?

Congratulations on the visit JumpHigh! Hope you hear good news soon.

Awesome Jumphigh! That is the way it is supposed to be…you fall in love with the school, they fall in love with you and you can’t imagine yourself anywhere else. Follow through and make sure you close the deal! Congrats.

well this is excellent news… congratulations on all you have accomplished so far… it is a great team and they get along really well… so psyched for you… keep us posted as this all comes together… so happy your OV was so successful and everything you had anticipated!!

@fogfog, they hosted 12 recruits two weekends ago, 34 recruits last weekend (!!!), and 13 this weekend. I was offered the likely route before I visited, but I just wanted to make sure. I have verbally committed and hopefully will receive a decision within two weeks or so.

Hi JumpHigh
First, congrat! This is looking so good!

To clarify the numbers a little, the Ivy I’m most familiar with has the following numbers of freshman on the 2009-2010 Track and Field roster:

Women 14
Men 9

Some of them are walk-ons, but most were recruited. I’m not sure if your numbers of kids on OVs includes both men and women. That might help some recruits and parents understand the math- there ARE lots more OVs hosted by each school than there are offers. However, the pool of kids making the OVs is spread over a number of schools, both the other Ivies, and other DI schools that might be a better match for the student.

Please know, I’m not at all trying to communicate that I don’t think your odds are good. On the contrary, I think you’ve been told in every way possible (except actual receipt of the LL) that you’re in.

Thanks for checking back in and sharing your experiences. This is all very helpful!

@riverrunnerI totally get what you mean. Yes, the numbers were of boys and girls. There were 13 this weekend, but only 3 guys, and I was the only jumper. And also, there are 15 girl freshman on the track team but only 4 guys.

And the thing with the Ivy OV’s is that these kids are also being recruited by multiple other ivy league schools, and possibly some scholarship schools, so the chances of those kids committing to this particular school are lowered even further.

Congrats Jump High!! DD recruiting process was very much in line with what you went through!

DD received her likely letter today (via really SLOW snail mail) from 1st choice Ivy. Letter was post marked Oct 7 which was when she got “official” notice from both coach and admissions via email. She is in the process of “breaking up” with other coaches which is not an easy thing to do after months of phone conversations and emails. She has cancelled 2 other OV. She is thrilled with her choice and so are we!

Congratulations c’smom and daughter on the likely! How wonderful to have the deal done!

DD has cancelled one of her OV after receiving LL last week but is getting extreme presure from another coach where an OV is set for next weekend. Said coach has basically told her that an Ivy League LL means nothing and she should honor her upcoming visit at his school.
She/we feel very confident in the wording of the LL and DD has already faxed paperwork to Ivy to amend her regular decsion status to ED so that she will receive “the real deal” in mid December. This was not a request from coach or admissions.

All of the other coaches that she has “broken up” with have been cordial and have told her to please contact them if things don’t work out.

Any advise on this?
