Homebuddy--Thanks!! You too. I had a mentor, btw. But that was because I wanted to do some real, relevant research, which is not easy in my field (astronomy) without a mentor :p

intherow--Yes, I saw you! Good job. Your project was titled "The Effects of Repeatedly Advertising Some Website in Completely Inappropriate Places on the Annoyance Level of College Confidential Posters", right?

Thanks GuitarMan! And don't worry, I didn't take that offensively at all. It's true that our school has never had so much success with Intel -- and this year, no one was more surprised than we were! Hmm... also, I seem to remember you from a certain Hempstead town meeting to acknowledge the Siemens people...

haha seriously? Well you couldn't have been at regionals so I probably didn't talk to you :p Sorry, lol I do feel bad now ;) I remember you, though, from the pic on the Newsday site....haha.

HmmmZz.. according to the blog of that girl that made finalist last year, it doesn't seem that finalists are notified early. Anyone know about this?

Hmm, my principal said that newspaper (err, I think he said The New York Times) people would come and interview and photograph me tomorrow, lol. Does that really happen? One can be in a newspaper just for making semi?

Thanks tupac, congrats to u too. I suspect Intel only came cuz my school is in the Bay Area right next to Intel itself. homebuddy, that may happen, the Oakland Tribune will interview me sometime soon even tho i'm only a semi.

hey i'm the siemens kid who didnt make semis haha..dunno why though..grades and SATs maybe? but they werent that low though. plus i thought they mainly looked at the research report itself. i srsly doubt its research though..iono..

but in anycase, congrats adam and the rest of you guys!

Aw, sorry about Intel. I have a friend who made semis for Siemens and didn't make it for Intel. On another note, a reporter from the San Jose Mercury News just came and interviewed me for an hour and a half -- the article is apparently mostly about homeschooling, but the STS stuff should be a big part, too!

But iamindian216 made siemens national finals and didn't make intel! If anything is curious, this would be...

All I could think of is this, as told to me by someone familiar with one of the judges of STS: that they are very suspicious of highly advanced work, the kind that requires costly equipment and large sums of money. If they perceive that we played a relatively minor role in the development of the project, it would spell doom for us. So I was told that we must ensure (through our essays, short answers, and mentor's statements) that the research must appear wholly our own, so as to remove the least bit of suspicion.

dualityim: yeah i agree with you--but thats a major portion of what the mentor/professor's rec is about: the actual contribution and work of the student. i'm pretty sure my mentor stressed that all of the work was done by me..so i doubt that was the problem..

Avalon that's pretty cool, I also had an interview with the Oakland Tribune today. I also saw an Intel semifinalist from Gunn High was interviewed by San Jose Mercury News.
