Official 2006 Intel Science Talent Search STS thread!

There's always handwriting... that's what I did.

What exactly is the title page for STS? And is this page included within the 20 page limit? Thanks.

guys, i have a question on whether i should bother applying- my research has to do with anxiety and depression in mice, and in two of the experiments, we use novel environments (i.e., aversive light in cage) that basically induce anxiety, and we observe their behaviors. the intel rules say: # No projects involving live non-human vertebrate animal experimentation will be eligible.

Live vertebrates are defined as any live, non-human vertebrate, mammalian embryo or fetus, bird and reptile eggs within three days (72 hours) of hatching, and all other vertebrates at hatching or birth.

Excluded from the above rule are:

Projects involving animals in their natural environment that are non-invasive and non-intrusive studies (i.e. observational, behavioral) that do not affect an animal’s health or well-being by causing stress, discomfort or pain and in which the student will have no physical contact with the animal(s).

OR Projects being conducted in a registered institution or laboratory where animal experimentation is taking place and in which the student will have no physical contact with the animal(s); and
1. the student works only with non-living material (e.g., tissue, blood) that has been supplied to the student by the supervising scientist; and
2. the animal(s) involved is sacrificed for a purpose other than the research being done by the student.
thanks for any input! i'm basically done with my report (from westinghouse) and im working on the essays now.

I entered a project in Comp Sci~

i feel behind. maybe i shuld just not submit

so how prestigious does Semifinalist status and Finalist status look in terms of college admissions? I heard Finalists can basically get into any college they want. Is that true?

Also, 1 of my teachers gave me her recs in an envelope, and my other 2 teachers sent their recs directly to Intel. Am I supposed to open my teacher rec when assembling the entry (becuz the instructions don't say anything about leaving them in their envelopes).

Are we supposed to double space our essays?

Is it too late to start a research as sophomore? When did you start yours?

bump .

Semifinalist status in the Westinghouse and/or STS helps alot.

Regional Finalist/Finalist status is like a perfect SAT (anyone agree?)

i believe that Finalist status at Intel is slightly more prestigious than Regional Finalist status at Siemens. For example, NYU guarantees all Intel Finalists a full ride + acceptance and other added benefits. I've also heard Intel talks to the colleges of Finalists, but I'm not 100% sure if that's true. But both are pretty prestigious. It would be interesting to see which colleges Semis and Finalists at Siemens and Intel matriculate at.

Btw, anyone know the answer to any of my questions above? Thanks.

hey r u doin all this ur junior year or senior year?

nvm its senior year

The Research report summary is basically an abstract right? But an abstract in 100 words?? ahhhh. Will they mind if we go a little over? How is everyone doing on the word limit to the research report summary?

It is an abstract, but not in technical terms. I'm sticking to the word limit of 100 words

We are wondering the same thing about the recommendations. We assume you take out of the envelope like the entry form shows, but wish this question would be answered explicitly by someone who knows or has been through this before.

Oh man, I finished the whole Research Report in one 10 hour burst of creativity, all day yesterday. It didn't end up crap either, my reseach is pretty is cool.
We'll see how it turns out.
In regards to one of the quesitons on here. umm i left in the envelope, considering I thought my teacher wanted me to keep it sealed when she gave it to me. I honestly don't think they would mind.

FedEx overnight is a godsend! :D

Most definetly. Mine isnt going out til tommorow afternoon.

Both Westinghouse and STS have around 1500 entries and 300 semis.

Is one neccesarily harder to be named a semifinalist in?

I'd like to know who made it to Westinghouse but not STS or vice versa. Also, of course, I'd like to know who entered and was selected as a semi for both or for neither.

Do you think any individual projects that made it in the seimens wouldn't make it in the STS? (assuming that the grades, transcript, etc. are not harmful)?

Your thoughts...
