Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

QuestBridge National College Match - The Application

Application, requirements, etc. found here.

Good luck!!

When I try to "find my school", every time I click on the link for my high school or try to close the window via the "close the window" button, I get a javascript error. Problem is is that it's happening to me on every computer I try it on, so is anyone else having this problem? I tried e-mailing questbridge tech support about 10 days ago but have yet to get a response.

You need to insert your teacher recommendation information before inputing the "find my school" box.

I had the same problem.

wow! then we might get into the same college, or happen to be competitors! haha nice to know I have someone facing a similar situation

my teacher faxed a recommendation letter, but my rec. letter status in "my locker" still says "not started"
any one who had their teacher faxed?
did questbridge send any emails to inform you? Or how did you know it went through, because I tried emailing them and they never answered.

^Well, they prefer that your teacher fills out the application online, and I'm guessing since they didn't, the "My Locker" status is "Not Started" for the online recommendation since you faxed it.

Also, did you call QB to make sure someone was at the other end before your teacher faxed it?

Hi there again!
As I was working on the questbridge application, I started to wonder whether Questbridge superscores the SAT scores too? I know that some top schools do it but I wasn't sure if it applies in this case as well...
Another thing- when are we sending in the financial aid information? Are we sending in the tax returns and all the required forms AFTER we've been matched? Thank you so much for clarification!

I'm not real sure, but I think they do.

Yes, you send in the official financial forms to the colleged you are matched with.

Here's the link to the due dates of the financial forms for each college:

College Match Program: Requirements

I mean, I'm sure Questbridge superscores SAT scores but it seems, to the best of my knowledge, that standardized exams aren't as important to Questbridge as to colleges. It's more about what your experiences are and how you've battled obstacles while balancing school, etc that is really important

Not quite true. You only send in financial documentation if you become a finalist, which means you send all of the documents to the schools you ranked. You never become "matched" with more than one school (in fact, if you participate in the match, you will only know who you matched with that was highest on your ranking).

^Oops, I forgot to post that aswell. Thanks for clarifying that!

Wait I'm still very much confused though...

Okay just to give you a scenario to work with, I'm applying to only two schools through the Questbridge match round, Yale and Princeton. Now, am I sending in the financial information as specified by each one of the colleges AFTER i've been selected as a Questbridge finalist and BEFORE those two colleges notify me with their results? Am I correct in saying that just for the Questbridge application alone, we do NOT have to send in any "official", "documented" financial forms except for briefly stating the annual income and such?

Thanks for the clarification.

Does anyone know which tax returns are eventually going to have to be submitted? The financial questions reference 2007 income.
It’s going to depend on the school. See each under the financial documents box:

College Match Program: Requirements

I think they’re supposed to be updated to reflect the 2008 income. I’ve emailed QB about this.

I didn't even hit "submit" yet?!
Don’t worry—as long as you can still edit, you should be fine. Email QB if the problem persists.

I was wondering, since I'm theming my essays, if I should make the "evaluate a significant experience" essay, which I haven't written yet, aswell according to my overarching theme.
You can if you’d like. I think it’s more important than there be a theme in an individual essay, but you can choose to theme your essays—or your whole application—according to an overarching theme. For example, my applications had the general theme of ‘language’ and my ECs, honors/awards, etc. reflected it as well as my essays (one on a language-mind theory, one on writing, one on language construction, etc.).

However, it wouldn’t hurt you not to maintain that overarching theme in your ‘significant experience’ essay.

1) i'm wondering if being an international student lowers my chance of getting accepted in RD?
Being an international applying to US colleges tends to mean it’s harder to get in. This is in general, not just through QB. It’s not always true, though.
2) In the RD round, is Questbridge app more preferable for colleges?
It’s unclear whether the app is preferable—the colleges don’t state how much weight they give each, but you can see the college-specific RD requirements here:

QuestBridge National College Match - Regular Decision Table

That should give you an idea as to which they prefer. We have discussed the advantages of the QB app before, as well.
To successors of the Questbridge match, I know my chances are low because i can only send my early decision to Yale, and my stats aren't that high! Should I apply for the match round at all?
You should. It doesn’t matter exactly how high your stats are once they’re in a general ballpark, since the decisions are based on holistic admissions. Thus, they’re going to take context into consideration, as shown in your essays, your financial documents, etc. Nobody can say for sure whether you have a shot.
what does questbridge care most? grades? Essays? recommendation? SAT? activities?
None of us can really say, since none of us evaluate QB applications, but just from what I’ve seen, I’d say QB cares most about essays. They are willing to overlook lower test scores or grades if the student appears to be deserving and accomplished despite adversities, as shown in the essays.
do we have to send any other applications (financial aid, etc) for the match round except for the questbridge app and teacher reccomondation?
Yes, check out the college-specific requirements for the Match round:

I remember QB did send emails confirming. You’ll have to give them time to process the documents, though—they have thousands to process.

will high sat scores make up for a less than perfect GPA for questbridge?
I don’t think they so much “make up for” it as just provide another piece of the puzzle. No one factor will keep you out, but no one factor will guarantee a spot. Thus, QB will look at all pieces to the puzzle in deciding finalists. Again, I’d say essays play a pivotal role.

I don’t remember having heard or read whether they do or not. I’ll ask them.
Another thing- when are we sending in the financial aid information? Are we sending in the tax returns and all the required forms AFTER we've been matched?
No. They are due by November 3rd.

College Match Program: Requirements

You must send in the financial documents, as specified on the above page, between the time you find out your finalist status (October 24th) and the day they are due for the Match round (November 3rd). You won’t find out our finalist status until a month later.
That’s correct. QB doesn’t want any financial documents other than the self-reported info on their application. (I myself had panicked over this right before the deadline, emailed them, and was assured that I didn’t need to send in any financial documents to QB itself.)

I would agree with this. After all, QB itself doesn’t require any standardized tests. This isn’t to say that QB doesn’t emphasize academic achievement, since it certainly does, but it seems that context is emphasized (to be expected, of course).

Phew, sorry it took so long to reply! Remember: September 30th is fast approaching, so don't procrastinate on any of this! And as always, good luck. :D

I am an International Student, and my country's (Thailand) law doesn't require divorced/ separated parents to support any financial funds. Do I have to send a Noncustodial parent profile? (In the Questbridge application, it says if one of my parents doesn't support financially, I have to fil the Non-cus...) If so, is it due on sept.30 (when the questbridge app is due, or is it due after finalists are informed?)
(Am I mistaken that that the CSS profile and FAFSA documents are only for US citizen applicants?)

by the way, thank you kyledavid80!

You're welcome. :)
No. You send the noncustodial waiver form directly to the colleges you're ranking. (Unless the application specifies otherwise, it shouldn't be due by September 30th.)

Thank you so much quicksandslowly and kyledavid80! I'm probably haunting you guys now with my questions... i guess I could also ask questbridge themselves but I'm too lazy and impatient... lol

Actually, my counselor wanted to know whether the transcript(that includes the grades and gpa's) was the only thing that had to be faxed to questbridge. If she has to fax in the transcript, does that mean she has to fax in the recommendation letters as well(she has internet so she could do it online).

Thank you again,
unefille

does it matter what subject teachers the recommendation are from? in other words, does one recommendation need to be from a math/science and another from English/language? or does it not matter? because I’m looking to get both recommendations from my English teacher and my Spanish teacher because I think they’ll both write me great recommendations.

I am trying to have my teachers do all the recommendations at one time, QB and Common App. (Good idea quicksandslowly and KyleDavid 80!!) (they may hate me less by the time I'm through with all this! LOL).

I looked at the Common App, which I've started filling out since it is quite similar to QB's, and cannot locate what/how on teacher recs. Would that possibly be in the actual school's "supplement" section?

Thanks for all your help guys! Now if I could only get enough time to get those essays done! ;) Oh, and I got invited to apply for National Honor Society which has to be in within two weeks. Yikes!!!!!!

She does not fax in the recommendation letters (your teachers submit those online). She faxes in your transcript and scores (if separate).
QB just requires that they be from two teachers in core academic subjects.

National College Match Program: FAQ

Make sure you're obeying the recommendation requirements of the schools you're ranking (Chicago has specific requirements in each subject area, for example). Otherwise, you'll have to go to more teachers for recommendations, and the process will get more complicated.

Like you, my English and Spanish teachers wrote me the strongest recommendations, which is in part what deterred me from applying to schools like Chicago (which require a science rec as well).

tsprite:

Good job getting started early on the Common App. :)

cannot locate what/how on teacher recs.
Make sure you enter what schools you're applying to through the Common App. I think you may also have to fill out the information of those writing your recs in the school info part (though I think that might be just your counselor info).

I believe the teacher rec forms are in the 'school forms' part. I think Common App deleted my account, so I can't log on and see. Sorry!
From memory, no, they're in two separate sections.
