Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

Anonymous: Either works, choose whichever one you feel suits your situation better.

Vicky_sky: I don't think you can alter your apps between Match and RD round (since the CommonApp materials are already submitted) but some schools do require you to fill out additional Apps for RD round (UChicago comes to mind). Also, there's really nothing to lose applying to a non-binding school (I know one kid who got matched for Princeton but turned it down for Harvard, so really... shouldn't be a big deal turning down the offer).

26 pages of questions is a lot to go through so sorry if this has already been answered but, my question is:

A lot of people have said that when they got accepted in the RD round to whatever college, they received either the same amount of financial aid or close enough to it as did the QB applicants that were matched. With that in mind is there any particular reason why one should go through the college match round besides the guarantee of a four-year scholarship? Is there any advantage with being a "finalist deferred to the RD round" or "a QB college match applicant" as opposed to just choosing to have QB send your app in the RD round?

Post #62 from KyleDavid80:

alessandro16: as I've said many times before, the beauty of the program is not in the Match round, but in the RD round, where as much as five times the number of students are accepted, with generous (or full) financial aid. In that respect, QB is advantageous and definitely worth the effort, if just so that you can become a finalist and go through RD.

I have a resume, should i put that in the additional information section? Also, kyledavid you're correcting essays? can you correct mine? :)

what are the questbridge schools that require you -- after finding out you're a finalist -- to fill out their additional applications for Early?

@david.tse09 - I believe kyledavid said to email it to him (use the "email to kyledavid" feature when clicking on his name). LOL I'm not his spokesman but I'm sure he'll look it over

@stasis - Go to the Questbridge website and look for the "National College Match Requirements Table" - it gives you all of the requirements per each school. NOTE: Many schools require you to fill out more info

I hope all your applications (QB or not) are coming along well! :)

My question is this: should the biography essay be tackled as an essay that is a summary about most of your life, or more refined to a specific moment?
It can be taken either way. I would try to make a unifying theme in the essay. See my posts #73 and #75 for more info:

If we are not matched, I know that everyone is given the option of forwarding applications, but can we also fix up those apps before they are re-sent?
The only thing you can fix up at that point is the additional applications/supplements, if the college requires them. You can’t amend the QB application after you submit it in September.

can a person who ranks zero schools be designated as a "QB Finalist"?
To my knowledge, yes. I’m emailing QB about it. (In other words, you’d be just having your application forwarded to the RD round.)

Yes, there is. For one, many of the students who got in RD didn’t get a full scholarship, but they did get very generous aid (often these students are low-income but not extremely low-income). For another, even if you have a very low income and you don’t get matched, not all schools offer the same scholarship for RD students. The Match scholarships also tend to have more perks (guaranteed scholarship, travel taken care of, etc.).

Thanks, tsprite, for adding that—I was about to search for that older post. ;)

Unless the application says no, go right ahead. Just make sure it doesn’t repeat information from the application.

Check out this page for the college-specific requirements (what laststopforme mentioned):

College Match Program: Requirements

Yesterday, I received a mail invitation to consider the QB Program, telling me that I've been invited because of information they were sent by the College Board.

1) I hope this doesn't sound silly, but does the fact that I got an invitation (as opposed to just going to the site and applying) mean that I have any more hope than anyone else of becoming a Finalist?

2) I'm quite surprised that my College Board information would attract them to me. I only have an Unweighted GPA of 3.8, relatively mediocre SATs, and am in the top 12% of my class. My family is however, quite lacking in the monetary department. Could this be the only reason that I was invited?

sorry for the swarm of questions but which of the Questbridge schools require one science SAT II, one math SAT II, and another sat II of preference? is it only MIT?

and thank you for the previous responses! you guys have been great help.

stasis:

Go to College Match Program: Requirements and it has a list of all the colleges and their requirements.

Hope this helps until our great leader KyleDavid80 can post! ;)

Oops! Just noticed KyleDavid 80 posted that link earlier.

I just wanted to say that if you cannot get an answer here, I have emailed questions to the QB staff and they are fantastic about not only providing answers, but getting back to you in a short time.

Hope this helps!

Hi everyone!

Does anyone know which tax returns are eventually going to have to be submitted? The financial questions reference 2007 income.

Thanks so much!

Yeah, I noticed that, too. It seems some dates on some things have been updated, while others have not.

Here's a good rule of thumb: look at the due date. If a college asks for financial data to be sent to them prior to Jan. 15, 2009, then they are asking for 2007 documents. If they want things sent to them Jan. 15, 2009 or later, they most likely want 2008 data.

Wait I am having a heart attack:

My Application: Completed
College Match Student Application:Completed and Submitted

I didn't even hit "submit" yet?!

And I can still edit things...I just noticed after I fixed a typo in one of my short answers

kyledavid80

I was wondering, since I'm theming my essays, if I should make the "evaluate a significant experience" essay, which I haven't written yet, aswell according to my overarching theme.

Thanks!

1) i'm wondering if being an international student lowers my chance of getting accepted in RD? (I know the match round is restricted to only Yale/Princeton for me)

2) In the RD round, is Questbridge app more preferable for colleges? (I read many ppl's comment on the advantage of Questbridge apps, but since many colleges also don't accept QB app I'm thinking maybe colleges prefer common app?)

3) To successors of the Questbridge match, I know my chances are low because i can only send my early decision to Yale, and my stats aren't that high! Should I apply for the match round at all?
Here are my stats:

GPA 3.81/4.00, SAT: 1950, (Didn't take subject tests yet, but going to take Math IIC and Japanese), IB Diploma....,
President of National Honor Society, done 2-3 major community services, Varsity volleyball

And one last questions to successors.. what does questbridge care most? grades? Essays? recommendation? SAT? activities?

do we have to send any other applications (financial aid, etc) for the match round except for the questbridge app and teacher reccomondation?
(by the way, I am an international student...so is there any additional requirement for that?)

i agree. will high sat scores make up for a less than perfect GPA for questbridge?

wow weilly, weird coincidence but we have almost identical stats and being int'l students.
