Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

hey guys does using questbridge give any advantage over applying regularly? wont colleges know that you are of low-income if you apply one or the other?

It works like this: You don't apply through Questbridge and also as a "normal" student, as you call it. That would be applying twice.

You apply TO Questbridge, not THROUGH Questbridge. If you are ACCEPTED by Questbridge, it is referred to as being a "Questbridge Finalist" and you are eligible to THEN apply THROUGH Questbridge to any of their 26 affiliated colleges, either through their early (match) process, their regular decision process, or both.

If, say, you apply to Questbridge, are named a finalist, and then, through Questbridge, you apply to Notre Dame, you would follow Questbridge and Notre Dame's joint instructions on how to do so. It's really quite simple and only done once. If you picked ND and don't get in early, you are carried over into their regular decision pool.

Advantage? Well, technically, if schools say they are "need blind" (which most of the upper echelon schools are), they pledge to not intermix your financial aid app with your application for admission. That means that the admissions people aren't supposed to know whether you are low-income or whether you are a billionaire when they are deciding whether to admit you.

As many top level schools are being criticized for not having a diverse group of students from all income levels (far more wealthy students then lower income) they are looking for more lower income students. Twenty-six colleges have retained Questbridge to help them find these high achieving, lower income students. When those schools get a Questbridge app, they are being tipped off that you are lower income. Without Questbridge, no one will know until AFTER you have been accepted (IF you are accepted).

That would be the admissions "advantage" of Questbridge, in a nutshell.

i was referring to the fact that national merit finalist is not announced until after the Questbridge application and therefore cannot be an award i mention

i have another question: it asks for cumulative GPA. does that mean 10-11 or 9-11?

Son decides to apply. He doesn't want to go through the match part if becomes a finalist, in other words, he wants to forward the QB application to certain schools for the regular round. In this case, does he ask his teachers to submit recommendation letters again in December ( if the colleges don't use the QB application), or just go ahead and have his teachers submit letters both to QB and other schools now?

Question!!!

I'm trying to put in my GPA but I have an issue. I have 3.8 GPA unweighted, but a 4.9 weighted, but I can't enter it in that way. Questbridge stops me and says "The difference between weighted and unweighted GPA cannot be greater than 1.0"

I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to understate or overstate my GPA.

hello,

so all of my teachers have agreed to write recommendations for me and so my question is what do i do now? im filling out the page for recommendations but one of my teachers and my counselor dont really respond to emails so what do i do? and my last recommender might be able to do it through the internet so what do i do?

also, is it possible for my recommenders to write out the recommendations and then fax them or something or does it need to be done over the internet? and also the recommendations they write where exactly does it go? b/c on the page i saw there were only questions and i didnt see any space where the rec. they wrote would be placed. would it be in additional space?

if I don't get accepted as a finalist, may i still use my QB App for regular decision?

I believe you can.

what happens if you do become a finalist, but not matched? do you have to re-do your entire common app and/or pay the fee again?
If you don’t get matched, you’re automatically deferred to the RD round (though some partner schools allow you to apply ED). You do not have to re-do the Common App. You don’t have to pay the fee again. See this table:

does that mean i dont need to apply as a "normal" student because i am a low-income student?
I don’t get exactly what you mean by “normal,” but you apply to QB partners through the Match, and if unmatched, you apply RD just like everyone else. You apply to other schools as well (safeties, etc.). Hopefully, you’ll be able to explain your circumstances on any of the applications you fill out.

4th house explains it well.
Not always. Some applications aren’t really tailored to low-income students, and so they don’t have much if any room to explain their background as well as highlight strengths they have. The QB app gives you enough leg room to do that. In that sense, QB is advantageous.

In addition, as I outlined in another post, applying through QB automatically flags you as a high-achieving, low-income student; you’re put in a “priority bin,” as Tom Parker put it; and so on.

This says 9-12, but since you don’t have your grades from this term, you should use grades 9-11.
Even if he doesn’t go through the Match round, he needs to have the teacher recommendations submitted now. His application won’t be complete (i.e. QuestBridge won’t be able to evaluate it) until he submits all required documentation, as noted in this:

You need to follow QB’s guidelines for calculating GPA. If you do, then the spread shouldn’t be more than 1 point.
They need to make sure to check their emails; alert them beforehand. If not, I believe they can just fax them in (that’s what I did).

The last part should say something along the lines of, “Feel free to write any additional material…” and that’s where they’d put their letter of recommendation. They still need to fill the other rec forms out, though.

another question.

im taking the act this saturday and satIIs in october. but the app. is due in september 30, so what happens with the sat II and the act score (i dont think the act scores come back before the 30th).

fastdry:
it says on the web that they will accept the SAT's on October:

Please note that the last testing dates we are able to consider for the College Match are the September 15th ACT testing date and the October 6th SAT testing date. If you plan to take the SAT in October, please list your testing date into the application (leaving the score field blank). Be sure to have the College Board or ACT forward your scores to all of the partner colleges you are ranking.

Do we HAVE TO fax the transcripts?
There's this system called etranscripts that allow students to send through the internet.
My counselor's been saying when I apply for colleges, use that site to send transcripts to colleges...
should I just ask my counselor to fax it?
Yes, you should just ask her to fax in a printout, since that's what QB has requested.

Just checking, we don't have to send in any financial/tax forms when we first apply, right? If so, which ones?

That's right--you'll send required financial documentation directly to the colleges you're ranking. QB just wants the self-reported info on their application.

just out of curiosity, did anyone else get an email about applying to oxford through QB? if so, do you plan to apply? what kinds of stats would be necessary to be competitive?

Question: What tests scores are GC supposed to fax? I thought we self-reported test scores?

I haven't gotten this far yet in the applications, so I was wondering how many long essays do we have to write and what is the word limit? I've recently wrote a required college essay for my English class and I was hoping to use that as one of my QB long essays. (My essay is approx. 1000 words. Is that too long?)

I think the limit is 800 words; we also have to write three long essays and 15 short answers.

Help! I'm terribly confused. :(

kyledavid80,

Amherst is not one of those that consider internationals for the Match round, and thus it makes sense that it does not accept the QB app for the RD round from internationals. (They do, of course, accept the QB app, with supplement, for the RD round from domestic applicants.)
So even through RD, some QB colleges do not accept QB applications from international students? (I'm waiting for my green card, grrrr.)

I e-mailed someone at QB and I got this reply:
However, for schools that request the use of their own application and/or recommendations, such as Princeton, you will need to have your recommenders fill out their letters in the schools forms as well.
One of the two colleges I ranked is Princeton. So for Princeton, my counselor would need to:
-fill out the QB Secondary School Report
-fill out the Princeton SSR (to be sent to Princeton directly?)
-fill out the Common App Secondary School Report (to be sent to Princeton directly?)

And if I don't get matched and I try to apply to other schools (UChicago, UPenn, etc) through RD, then would I need to have my teachers send in a Common App recommendation form to respective schools?

Please help me out. Thank you so much in advance. I wish everyone the best of luck on QB and college admissions!

Another question which, after reading last year's QuestBridge thread, has weighed heavily on my mind: if we are chosen as a Finalist and apply to one or more universities, do we have the same chance (percentage wise) as if we didn't apply through QuestBridge?

Why is it that so many few people get matched EA, yet so many of those who didn't get accepted later RD? I feel like applying through QuestBridge will somehow lessen my chance at getting into a school EA.
