Official 2008 Questbridge National College Match Discussion and Help

Do we have to send official score reports from the ACT and SAT to the colleges we are ranking before September 30th or only after we are chosen to be a finalist?

Also can teachers fax recommendations or do they have to be done online?

Thanks :)

Kyledavid, thank you so much for answering my questions! So let me get this straight...

-GCs need to submit the QB SSR to QB and Common App SSR to ranked colleges respectively (or is it to QB?) by September 30.

I e-mailed QuestBridge last night also and... I got this reply regarding forwarding QB applications for international students:

Yes, you may use our application for regular decision if you are made a finalist.

I think I'm going to call all the colleges tomorrow to double check if that's true...?

After you're chosen as a finalist and before the Match round deadline (November 3rd).

This year, it seems as though they're done online, but my teachers had faxed theirs. This is what the application instructions say:

Print out the recommendation instruction forms and give them to your teachers and counselor. Your teachers and counselor should fill out their online recommendations following the directions provided in the instructions form.

The QB SSR is sent directly to QB by September 30th.

The Common App SSR is sent directly to the colleges you're ranking by the November 3rd--if they use the Common App. Otherwise, you'll need to fill out the forms they require.

That'd probably be a good idea, since Amherst doesn't allow it (using your QB application in the RD round if you're an international), but, according to QB, others do.

Just adding that I've made my way mostly through the essays, and that if you haven't received yours back yet, you should shortly. :)

kyledavid: Dear Student,

Thank you for starting your QuestBridge application. We look forward to reading your completed app after the deadline on September 30.

We write to inform you of an exciting new opportunity that we are offering to a select few applicants. Oxford University in Oxford, England has recently contacted us and is very interested in offering one full scholarship to a QuestBridge student (including travel expenses to and from Oxford during holidays). They are looking for someone who is interested in studying one of the subjects listed on our website. Oxford students are not able to change their academic subject focus after studies begin, so you need to be certain of your subject choice before pursuing this opportunity.

The academic experience at Oxford University differs in some significant ways from the typical American college experience. To learn more about academics at Oxford, please take some time to read through their undergraduate education description.

Please note that there is an accelerated timeframe for applying for this opportunity. If you are interested, you need to send an email to oxford_opportunity@questbridge.org by this Friday, September 12 at 9AM Pacific time. In your email, include a statement of approximately 100 words describing the subject area you wish to study and why you want to attend Oxford, along with your name, hometown, and a phone number at which we can contact you over the next two weeks.

From the group of students who submit statements, we will select a small number of students (less than 25) and work with them to complete the application requirements described on our website.

Regards,
QuestBridge

That's really great to hear! I'm glad QuestBridge is diversifying in its scope.

But just a few days to decide on whether they'd like to attend Oxford, a school out of the country, with a wholly different philosophy on undergraduate education? Oxford could've timed that better.

Any idea what they mean by "subjects listed on our website"?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

One of my recommenders leaves the country on Tuesday. He has already written the recommendation but is having trouble using the questbridge website. He needs to submit the rec before leaving the country if he is to make the deadline. Faxing is not an option for him.

He wrote the following:
"I got my recommender password and all it asked was for me to ID myself (including my date of birth for some odd reason) but never asked for a narrative (which I have composed and am ready to send). Would you check with them and in case something was in a wierd place, tell me how to access it and I will send it right off."

I sent QB an email, but I want to reply to him as soon as possible. What do you guys think the problem is?

Another question; say you become a finalist but don't want to apply to a partner college through the college match with QB; will the college hold that against you?

kyledavid: According to the link in the email:"The only subjects currently available for funding are: Biochemistry, Economics & Management, English, Modern History, Law, Mathematics, PPE (Politics, Philosophy & Economics), and Physics. It is possible to study certain joint combinations of these subjects such as History & English. All courses are for 3 years except Modern Languages and Biochemistry which are 4 year degrees." I agree that they could have sent us this a couple weeks ago.

I am really confused about the whole "binding" situation of QuestBridge. Is QB a replacement for the CommonApp? Is it the same as applying ED? Can I apply with QB as well as ED (UPenn)with CommonApp? If not, can I still apply ED with CommonApp if I am not named a finalist?
Also, are the essays for the two things the same and will the college see both applications? What is the College Matching process? Can QB be simply an app for a scholarship rather than for admissions
Sorry, it's a lot of questions bundled up together.

I wanted to go through this thread to see if anyone asked this question already...but its wayy too long :(

I haven't taken the SAT or SAT IIs yet (I'm a Canadian student BTW)...would they consider me without the scores or can I send it to them when they are released? (I am going to take the Oct SAT and Nov SATIIs)
Are there any advantages in doing QB if I am an international student? I doubt I'll be chosen as a finalist...

Nevershoutnever:

Not meaning to offend, but when you ask, "What is the College Matching process?" as well as your other questions, it seems to me you need to spend a good 30 to 40 minutes on the Questbridge website. Your questions are really basic and to still have them, it sounds like you have never been to their site at all. Start there and get at least a bit of a handle on things first. After that, I am sure there are people on this post who would be glad to clarify things further.

How is everyone doing with 17 days before the deadline? :D

I knew there's less than 3weeks left but saying 17days makes me nervous XP
haha.. well I still have to write my essays.. but everything else is taken care of.. (I think!)

But I just can't start writing the essay!
Once I start, I'm sure I'll get it done.. But it's really scaring me ><

I'm reusing one of my CPS essays(intellectually exciting one), and I'm about halfway through the significant experience essay, and I'm stuck >.<. And the thought of writing the biographical essay makes me want to cry and huddle into a fetal position in a dark corner. :'''''( Yeah I'm pretty anxious/stressed.

Yeah, the long essay is where I'm stuck....ugh. Thank goodness I remembered to ask my teachers for recs

hey, i'm a new member and first time poster! just wanted to say reading through some of these pages has been really helpful so thanks to all.

anyways, i'm also trying to work on my essays, but am really stuck. i'm freaking out because i really don't think i can finish on time.
if i only plan to rank one college, would it be alright to address that college in one of my essays or should i just keep them pretty general? can a dream be considered a "significant experience"? is it okay if essays are kind of short? i don't know. anyone who has already worked on their essays willing to bounce ideas around with me?

I haven't started my essays for QB, but I'm really thinking hard about the topics..
I think you should address the college if you strongly feel the want to attend that college.. but since this is firstly for the QB to pick the finalists, you don't have to put the name in.. I saw most colleges require their original applications to be turned in anyways.. so you can write more there.

And I don't think the dream itself can be a significant experience. You should specify a personal experience of how you came to have that dream. You should show how you changed, learned from that experience.

Your essays should be long enough to show yourself, but not exceeding the word limit.

Just think about what would really show the admissions people who you are.

And don't stress too hard ~
think of it as a weekend English writing assignment..
You' might be able to write them in one weekend!
But everyone says that revising is really important, so don't forget to leave time for revision :)

thanks. it's kind of comforting at least to see that other people are in the same boat with me. and yea, once i actually get some life into my essays i'm sure the word count will go up. it's just right now that i'm totally stuck at a wall.

would it be better to write something more humorous or deep and profound? i know the whole deal with admission officers having a bunch of essays to read so i guess something entertaining would catch their attention more, but i don't know if my kind of "funny" is actually funny. but then again i can't go real deep at the moment either....so frustrating.

also, in the case that i don't get matched, can i edit my questbridge application later for regular decision? sorry if this has already been asked.

WOW, so I was quickly jumping around in the application (filling in different parts of the app), when I entered the Application Forwarding section. Without reading the instructions properly, i accidentally pressed the 'Submit' button thinking it was just another small part to get done....I didnt know it was for sending your entire application to colleges for normal decision! I am freaking out so much right now, because my application was only half-done and I hadn't even started on the essays yet!!

I emailed questbridge.org about 10 minutes ago detailing my situation and asked if they could cancel the application forwarding, but they haven't responded yet... holy mother of god I'M FREAKING OUT

PLEASE HELP ME!! what should i do?!?!?
