So who's all planning on self-studying one or both of the AP Economics exams? I figure we can work together throughout the year; it would surely make self-studying more entertaining. I for one plan on using 5 steps and one other review book, most likely either Barron's or Princeton Review. What are you guys all planning on using to prepare yourself? Also, any tips would be appreciated! I'll try to keep this thread in the first couple pages throughout the year so it can be accessible to all of us self-studiers.

I will have Microeconomics as a class and I will self-study Macroeconomics. I planned on learning these subjects from textbooks (Principles of Economics by Mankiw and Economics by McConnell and Brue) for the most of the year. I will review from prep books a few weeks before AP Exam Weeks.

I plan on self-studying Micro (I took Macro this year and got a 5). I already have PR and plan on supplementing it with 5 Steps.

Taking Micro as a class next year. I think we use Principles of Economics by Mankiw and PR. Hopefully that will be enough!

I’m taking Macroeconomics at school, self-studying Microeconomics. I have 5 Steps and the school’s Economics textbook.

I’m taking both classes, I think. Will be my first and probably my only self studies in high school if I follow through.

self studying both, bought mankiw principles of economics (latest edition) and 5 steps to a 5

^Does Mankiw’s Principles of Economics look any good? For anyone who has used it before, how well does it parallel the AP exam?

I’m taking one of the classes, and I’ll be self-studying the other. I’m not sure which one I’m taking the class for, though.

Mankiw is golden. PR with Mankiw is a knockout. Good luck.

Buying Mankiw is a little overkill IMO… get it at a library or find it on the interwebz (pirate at your own risk).

I’m using 5 steps to a 5 to self study both micro and macro economics.
I’m indecisive at the moment about whether I should self study for AP micro/macro or AP psychology :(

Mankiw spits out a lot of unnecessary political junk IMO.

I received on 5 on both exams last year w/ minimal studying.

My suggestion:
1.) Principles of Economics -> Read the first few chapters that are generalized and information covered in the first few chapters is applicable to both macro * micro
2.) Princeton Review -> Read through the micro sections and do the practice test.
3.) Principles of Economics -> Skim micro related sections. *Not everything in PoE is on the AP Micro/AP Macro test so make sure what you’re learning correlates w/ PR.
4.) Princeton Review -> Read through the macro sections and do the practice test.
5.)Principles of Economics -> Skim macro related sections.

Essentially Principles of Economics gives you a solid foundation while Princeton Review will be efficient, by that I mean it will teach what you need to know to in the shortest amount of time, but it lacks examples and isn’t always thorough in their explanations.

i got 5s on both exams this year, and the only thing i barely used was “economics: principles and policy” by baumol and blinder. don’t use prep books like 5 steps and princeton review because they barely go over forex and other macro topics. the textbook by baumol and blinder is the best choice imo

you guys should check out reffonomics…I really don’t think you need to buy a review book when that site is around xD

I am currently taking ap macro as an online-class. Can I join in if it is considered as a self-study?

Yes you may.

Why Thank you Puggly123. haha…that was so princessey…lol. I am actually doing the tax multplier and the expenditure. so hard.

^Are you being sarcastic or is AP Macro really that hard?

No, actually I found that hard but I get it now, what I don’t get is Those demand and supply of agregate. And my class dosen’t even explain much, so I have to buy those prep books soon. Is it better to buy the 2010 or 2011? My teacher also told me that the questions are getting harder this year.:(
