I just found this website regarding “recommended for admission.” It seems that the department you applied to recommends you to the graduate school, and then the graduate school makes the final decision, taking funding, citizenship, etc. into account.

But then I don’t get why they sent me a link with ACCEPT and REJECT for the offer. If I were to click accept now, how would I truly be accepting if it’s contingent upon the graduate school. This is confusing, I will call Monday lol.

Hey regavo, sorry to burst your bubble a bit with my post there! Hopefully “recommended for admission” means we’re 99% accepted already! I had the exact same reaction when I read the email. I was so thrilled and excited when I saw “congratulations!” and then my eyes jumped to “admission.” Then I took a moment to collect myself and I read the entire email. As I kept reading, I started to think more and more “well this doesn’t seem as official and as straightforward of an ‘accepted’ as I would have expected…” which is why I posted to ask what people thought. I was also worried when I saw that you posted “accepted” when all the while I was thinking “oh no, I’m on the waiting list.” Anyway, glad to see we’re all on the same page and at least it means we’re a bit closer!

I’m interested to know what you find out when you call on Monday!

“Recommended for Admission” is just a technicality. The university, rather than the department, is technically supposed to admit students; however, schools always defer to the faculty in individual departments. The umbrella graduate admissions only handle the paperwork. Since department cannot admitted you, but they want you to know as soon as possible, they say “recommended for admission.” Unless there are very odd circumstances, you can be pretty confident you’ll be admitted once the department recommends you.

I received 3 emails from the school I was accepted to. They were sent about 4 days apart.

email said I was recommended for admission

email said “congrats” then provided some more details on visiting

email said “congrats” again and provided financial detail

I keep checking this page…having got a rejection from princeton and knowing who friend who got rejected from MIT and thinking that many universities are going to get back to us about now…but guess I was wrong…
Please feel free to keep updating…

has anyone got invited to Purdue’s recruiting weekend for civil (structural) engineering yet? I heard it was next Friday and I had not heard anything yet. The strange thing is I called my advisor once I got accepted and he told me about the recruiting weekend and the date it was on and said I could go ahead and mark it down on my calendar that I would be invited… and yet I have not heard anything yet!

Am I the only person who has not heard from almost all of my schools (8/9)? I am starting to get extremely worried and all my safety schools no longer seem safe…

Don’t worry Eisenmann! I haven’t heard back from 7/9 of my schools either. Still staying optimistic though =)

It might help to call the schools and ask them where your application is. I did that and it was just a relief to hear that my application (mine specifically, not just in general) was “still being reviewed” and not rejected yet. That’s also how I found out that one of the schools thought my application was incomplete when it actually wasn’t.

I applied two years ago and it was the end of march before I heard anything from Northwestern MSE PhD. It turned out that my application was “ranked” highly enough for them to offer me a masters but not a PhD. At least I didn’t get rejected. So I think you never know. It’s feasible to keep your hopes up if you haven’t heard back yet.

Applying for PhD at:

Notre Dame - EE - accepted, with funding (2/15)
UIUC - ECE - still waiting
Purdue - ECE - still waiting
Illinois Tech - ECE - still waiting, but not too concerned

So let me get this straight. People who have already been accepted to, let’s say, UIUC have been accepted because they are really strong candidates and super awesome at what they do. If they are going to reject me, do I have to wait until the very end of their acceptance process? Let’s be honest, I’d rather know right away if I’m not getting in.
