bahedou: What other schools are you considering at the moment? I still haven’t heard back from the top four schools I applied to (Caltech, Berkeley, Stanford, and MIT), so chances are not looking so hot.

Im in the exact same boat. I applied to all these schools and I haven’t heard anything from them. Luckily I was already admitted at Georgia tech so that will be my back up plan.

I guess by now the only way for me to get in one of these schools is because some admitted students will decline offers.

Congrats on Georgia Tech. What kind of financial package did they offer you? My top offer at the moment is from UT Austin ME PhD program ($30k/year for four years, no work required for the first year). I’m interested in UCLA as well, but I haven’t heard anything back from them yet for funding. If I get accepted into any of the top 4 without funding, it would still be a difficult decision.

I know Stanford doesn’t give TAs to newly admits. But do any of you know how likely is it for one to become a TA (since RA might be more tough) for the second year so if I take a loan it will only be for the first year

Also, after talking to people on forums and a professor, it seems like Stanford MS is very course-based with a little emphasis on research. My prof also told me that if you do well in Stanford MS you have a good chance to get a RA and continue PhD?

How true is this? Do you know? I find it surprising especially because non RAs in Stanford will find it tough to do substantial research. It will be like being an undergrad again, searching for profs with a project and even then the work is not so substantial and the time u work with that prof limits the results…

@rubynuby.
It’s a weird situation, I was an undergrad at Georgia Tech and I continued on to an MS and I’m currently getting funding on a project until the summer. I then have the option of leaving or switching to a PhD.

I think Berkeley had their visiting week end on the 3rd of March so I guess getting funding there is completely out of the question. I haven’t seen anything from Caltech though. Do you think it’s possible to get funding anywhere at this point?

Anyways good luck to you with the rest of your applications (and congrats on UT Austin) I really hope we get some positive feedback soon.

" think Berkeley had their visiting week end on the 3rd of March so I guess getting funding there is completely out of the question."

Is this really true…that’s a bummer…I got in Stanford without funding…I was hoping that I get into my other top 3 choices because you definitely get funding if you get in…like MIT, Caltech (and I thought Berkeley as well)…It would suck if I get into an university without funding again…

This can’t be true!! I know MIT’s visiting weekend for MechE is already over. If I get in after the weekend, I should still get funding (since they do guarantee funding for everyone)

Anybody heard from Northwestern ChemE Ph.D?

@confidentialgrad

Yes. According to thegradcafe.com, several PhD applicants were accepted by Northwestern’s Chemical Engineering Department in late December through January. I received a rejection yesterday, with the “opportunity of admission” to the Master’s in Biotechnology Program (no financial support). Hope this helps.

Got rejected by MIT MechE

I got rejected from MIT in Mechanical Engr as well.

Me three for a rejection from MIT. Bahedou, did you hear back from Stanford yet? I got accepted a few days ago but without funding. I think I’m leaning towards the UT offer because the financial package is way too good. I’m still waiting to hear back from Berkeley and Caltech.

No I have not. It would be nice to get in but I’d stay at GT since I’d rather start with my PhD right away.

I called Caltech though and I was told that they are making 20 offers and expecting about 12 students to accept them. The person I talked to told me she did not recognize my name, so I guess that’s a nice way of telling me I got rejected.

According to Berkeley’s website…they notify students if they got in (w/ and without funding) as they read the applications and will send all of them by end of April!!

That’s a long time! That will affect where I decide to go in the end…

Do you guys know if public universities consider in-state residency a pretty big factor for graduate admissions?

State residency is not a factor whatsoever in engineering PhD admissions (or any other PhD programs) to my knowledge.

Just got rejected by MIT’s CEE program. First academic rejection I have every really received. Don’t really know how to react… this sucks.

Sorry to hear that, Joeshy. MIT is pretty late in sending out the notifications. How did you hear about the rejections? Good luck with other choices!

how many people have gotten their replies from caltech? do they even tell you if they’ve rejected you?

Most of my results are in. Reposting stats in the new format (and correcting a mistake).

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Good amount of international experience through an internship in Germany and visits to two developing countries as part of water development projects through Engineers Without Borders. Also did a couple student projects on campus through IEEE and HKN. This is all worthless for PhD admissions but maybe it can get me that NSF fellowship.

Applying for PhD at:

Research area is materials/nanotechnology, especially nanoelectronics.

Stanford - EE - Accepted w/ 1-year fellowship
Northwestern - MatSci - Accepted w/ 1-year fellowship
MIT - EECS - Waitlisted (%#$!)
Berkeley - EECS - Rejected (meh)
Illinois - ECE - Accepted w/ 3-year fellowship/RA combo
Cornell - ECE - Decision to be made after visit* (Uh? See below
)

NSF GRFP - waiting… (the most important one, IMO)

Turned out somewhat better than I thought it would. Most likely going to take Northwestern MSE or Stanford EE (also considering Cornell, will be visiting there soon). If I get NSF, I may try to negotiate my way out of the MIT waitlist.

So Cornell wants us to visit and have one-on-one talks with the faculty on April 1st. Decisions, both admissions and funding, will be made immediately following the visit day. It isnt mandatory, but I got the sense that declining to visit is a good way to destroy your chances of getting your first-choice advisor or a fellowship offer. This is very surprising, and I wonder how they deal with internationals who cant visit? And frankly, its way too late in the process (just two weeks before acceptance deadlines). I decided to take the visit offer but they need to rethink this or at least move it up to early March at the latest. Cornell was probably the least selective place I applied to, so this is kind of annoying. If their fabrication labs weren’t amazing, I would’ve just withdrawn my application.

Is anybody still waiting on Berkeley for Mechanical Engineering?

Anyone has heard from Rutgers MSE?
