Official 2011 Engineering Grad School Profiles/Results/Discussion

ya nada for me too…

I called MIT, and they said they are going on like a daily basis…and admitting and rejecting people as they go maybe based on who they admitted and who confirmed that they are enrolling. They said that they probably won’t be done till end of March.

It’s just annoying…almost end of Feb and I only heard back from 1/7 schools that too a rejection…and it will suck to have come so close to getting admitted but get short.

Michigan - BME - Waiting
Boston - BME - Waiting
ND - BIOE - Waiting

** Has Anyone Heard back From any of these Schools for BME? Also, does anyone know when I should be hearing back?

@ umd, had interview at michigan almost 2 weeks ago. I heard they were going to have a 2nd rd of interviews in march for a different batch.

Applying for BME PhD

2 summers of BME research, 1 year of physics research w/ 1 publication (4th out of 7 authors)

UCSD [rejected]
USC [accepted w/ fellowship]
Columbia interview next week. Wish me luck!
UCLA - just reccomended by dept yesterday; waiting to hear abt funding

havent heard anything:
cal-tech, hopkins, satnford, Brown, Penn, Northwestern

Questions:

 1. How many % of people who get invited to visiting weekend & interview (in my case Columbia) get accepted?

What should I do about all the programs I didnt hear from. Should I call the prgoram/ email faculty? Does that sort of thing look good or annoying?

Thanks!

1.) I’ve heard back from Hopkins and they’ve had 1 rd of interviews already and the next rd of interviews is in March. Not sure if they have any after that. I didn’t apply to any of the other schools.

2.) It’s still early. If you haven’t heard back just wait a little longer. I think the bulk of schools for BME will get in touch with students in March.

@gravenewworld

How much time was it before they contacted you for an interview and the actual visit weekend? Thanks.

Approx. 1 month- 3 weeks.

Does anybody know if the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at UIUC is still admitting? For those that have already been accepted, what are the dates for the visitation weekends?

Any body going for the Harvard SEAS open house this weekend?

[Grad Student Open House ? Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences](http://www.seas.harvard.edu/news-events/calendars/community/grad-student-open-house/view)

Heard back from UMich and Berkeley today for MS in EE.

UMich: Admit
Berkeley: Rejection.

I just got into Stanford MS Mechanical Engineering but without funding…I don’t have 70-80k to pay out of my pocket. But even if I did, I wanted to know what exactly without funding means…that means I can not be a research assistant right?

So if I go to Stanford, I will only be doing course work??? That’s useless for people who are interested in doing PhD. How will I be able to get involved in research in Stanford? Will it be like undergrad all over again, where students have to hunt for a professor to work with and even then the partnership is too short for substantial work.

If I can do substantial research, will it be worth going to Stanford and being 80k in debt??

Is it possible that I enroll in Stanford and then become a RA by talking to different profs.

Yes, it’s meant to be a professional degree. You take 45 units and then you leave. It’s possible to take a research course (i.e. like "independent study"in UG) and maybe get a professor to be your advisor. But there’re going to be a lot of people at Stanford in the exact same situation, with the exact same mindset, trying to do the exact same thing (get a professor to fund you through RA). Demand for RA positions will beat supply, so some will necessarily lose out. I know Stanford ME doesn’t do direct PhD admissions, but it’s still risky.

If you’re obsessed with the MIT/Stanford/Berkeley brand name and cannot bear the thought of going to a “lesser” school, then take the risk. The safer route for those set on a PhD would be to go to a program that admitted them to PhD-track and doesn’t have a high attrition rate.

Will a big name school let a potential phd student go in without funding?

Completely not worth it if you have to fork over 80k of your own money. If you decide otherwise, just be prepared for $500 or $600 student loan payments per month for the next 20-30 years. It’s criminal to charge you $80k while they are sitting on almost $16 billion in endowment money.

Catscatscatscats, did you eventually get accepted to CMU and Stanford for PhD in Chemical Engineering as well? Considering your outstanding undergraduate record, you didn’t even needed a safety school. Congratulations!

Haha thanks! but I actually got rejected from Stanford. I’ve been on a few visits already, and I haven’t yet met anyone who got accepted. Also, I’m pretty sure CMU’s visiting weekend was this past weekend, so I’ll probably get rejected from there as well haha. I was thinking about withdrawing my app, but I’m kind of interested to see what happens. I guess grad school admissions are total crapshoots nowadays with having to match research interests/funding and stuff. It is odd though cause some of the other schools have offered me additional funding to sweeten the deal

Northeastern University - accepted and considering him for a federal tuition/stipend scholarship, decision to come this week
Tufts University - accepted, 40% tuition scholarship
Harvard University - accepted
Boston University - waiting

He is also being considered by his employer for a full tuition, 80% pay & benefits scholarship. That decision will not come for almost a month. :(

Anyone still waiting for a reply from Stanford MS mechanical engineering? I saw a few acceptances here and some from thegradcafe last Friday, but I haven’t heard anything yet so I don’t think I made it past the first round of admits without funding.

For those of you who already got accepted, do you think you are going to take the offer if you have to pay out of your own pocket?

I havent heard from Stanford MS in mechanical engineering either. I guess that can’t be a good sign.
