Official 2012 June ACT Math Test discussion

does anyone remember the pool in the triangle. something about SOHCAHTOA

I think the answer had tangent in it. Did the question after it also have answers like xxx sin xxx? If yes then it was the tan one. I remember just finding values and seeing if any matched up xD

@RusHeRz: It was an Olympic swimmer who had to swim across a river. They gave you one of the lengths (I think think it was leg B on the triangle) and an angle, and you had to figure out the width of the river.

Anyone remember the answer to this one?

Yea I put the tan one. I put B since it had the only Tan in it.

if i remember correctly it was 100 tan (something)

Anyone else think this math was harder than the one in April?

I thought this one was really easy. The one in April was really hard for me. Part of it may be that I prepared a lot more for this test, so I was working at a quicker pace, therefore I had more time to do the problems.

So is it unfair to the act test writers that i’m taking calc II and expiremental methods or something like that next year as a senior? Lol

@Mathman1551 No, that’s like asking someone a question on one book, and then blaming them because they haven’t read a different book.

I’m taking calc II next year too. I took this test with a year of Calc I under my belt. I wanted them to throw some basic derivatives and integrals at me.

the cos0tan0 problem was 2/3 that was the answer: 2/3.

I’m taking calc 3 next year too…btw did anyone automatically think of integrals/solids of revolution for the cone problem? Or was it just me?
:P

Haha yea i feel you. I felt that this was a pretty easy math test maybe a -1 36. I found was all fairly elementry mathematics, and i only had trouble with that stupid pets system problem, but i lowered the answered options to the two a and b with the negative slopes and guess with b. so idk

@RexT95: The answer was 10. If you did the math on it you would get like 10.049.

Yea no kidding, i might sound mad but i kind of miss integrals and derivates. And for the cones tht was the first thing i though solved it using tht method and checked it with their formula. Did anyone else do their survey math test with derivates just to be difficult when it asked for the slopes lmao

The sqrt of 101 was close enough to ten for me to not even care about checking. And for the cone. I took the area of the triangle and revolved it using pi. Good times. Reminded me of the ap test for a fraction of a second.

There was one f(x) one where you had to plug in -5 as x. I think the answer was either -19/10 (A) or 19/10 (D or E I think). What was the correct answer?

I remember a -19/10 I think.

I got 3/5, LGibson1011

The long answer was 36/50 or simplified to 35
