Official 2012 June ACT Math Test discussion

bigjim2: i put between 11/3 (i think 11 over something) and 5, with open circles on both

^@runner: that’s correct

I only got the |x| = -x one wrong. Put x=0 too hastedly. Darn.
Everything else was decent. I hope I got a 35 or 36 possibly :/

Is it always -1 = 35 and -2 = 34? D:
I’m counting on my Math and English to boost up my Science fail lol.

There were a lot of physics related questions on this Math test, I thought.
The other physics one was the h = -16t^2 + ?t equation with the launched rocket ship.
I got 1 for that, but I thought it was tricky with the wording.

For the rhombus one I made it into four 30 60 90 triangles. Area of one of the triangles was 2root3 multiply it by 4 to get total area.

I got 1 also for rocket one.

@meatkabob: i put 3 for that one…because when i solved the equation i got 1 and 2

Was the last pet one A or B?

They asked for the rocket’s ascent specifically…so it was t=1

pet one was answer choice B. a = -2/5 and b = 20

What did you guys get for the # 53, had something to do with a^-x or something like that.

And then what did you guys get for the conjugate pair question asking for real #'s or something… was it “abi”? ughhhhh I guessed “A” for the last 6 b/c it was the least abundant out of all my answer choices

@Wolverine
I did it differently but still got the same answer for the rhombus.
I solved for the height using trig (sin60=height*4), then just multiplied base x height.

@runner
Why would you add the two numbers? o.O

can someone explain the ascent one with two answers again?

@roonsta
I think I just plugged in a positive number like it asked for in the question for “a” and looked at the graph.
I forget the wording but something about decreasing…

@Noxsing

To answer the question, you must plug in 32 for h in the problem.
32 = -16t^2 + (some number)t
Then you can use the quad formula to get the two possible t values, which are 1 and 2. If you look at the graph or imagine a toy rocket being launched and then falling back towards the ground, this means that at 1 second the rocket is ascending to the tallest height and at 2 seconds it is falling back towards the ground.
The answer is 1 second.

@roonsta: x is decreasing if it is greater than or equal to zero

@roonsta it was decreasing. It was y=a^-x, which is same as y=1/a^x. As a increases, y decreases.

The one with i was (a-bi) if the original one in the problem was (a+bi) (I can’t remember)

Sorry, I meant y! As in f(x) is decreasing

^Everyone… preciate it. yeah i believe i put it in i did what you guys are saying, use a random number for “a”. I believe the answer might’ve been “B”?
Anotherquestion… it was in the late 30s i believe. had to do with the whole “Small Large, shampoo, etc” scenario. was it like a= 5 and b=2? or what? i was cluelesss…

what about the magnet problem, is there a consensus answer?

magnet is definitely 6root2.
