**Official** 2012 USNCO Chemistry Olympiad Discussion

For any people who have made camp before, did they get called or emailed?

Coordinator gets called, who calls HS teacher, who notifies student.

Okay thanks

I made it!!! They called my dad, who called me in the middle of class. I’m so excited!!! I hope you all got in too. I look forward to meeting some of you.

I can’t imagine they have processed the tests yet.

@barley81–Congrats! See you in Colorado, I guess!

@crazymomster–Hm I guess they must have been working hard over the weekend! Also they use a scanner for the MC then only grade the top 150 scorers, so that would reduce the grading time substantially.

i made it too!! so happy that brain fart on the last question didn’t cost me camp!!! haha :’)

It says on the website that they will be contacted on May 4th, that’s strange.

I think that was their latest date. They didn’t want to be held accountable for an earlier date in case they couldn’t make it.

Congrats dobbyoshi and lenov0 and see you at USAFA!

In that case I didn’t make it :’(

@thenerdyjew–aww sorry! But I’m sure you made High Honors, and there’s always next year. And the year after that, since you’re a sophomore, right?

Oh my, that was quick. Congrats to everyone who made it! Funny how a good number of 20 are CCers lol.

@thenerdyjew
I purchased Atkins after the exam. I only prepared for 2 months by doing practice exams (I wish my teacher told me about Chem O earlier) so I’m gonna work through the whole book over the summer.
We’re getting in next year
Or hopefully, lol because I’m a senior next year and it will be my last try

Yeah I’m definitely gonna buy Atkins sometimes soon and probably an Organic Chem book (so I can fill up all those wholes in my O-chem knowledge), work through the book.
And yeah I’m hoping for at least Honors or hopefully High Honors

I highly recommend Wade’s Organic Chem. I got that, looked through it, and fell in love. I also got the solutions manual. Wade’s is easy to read and it engages you, and I’m one of those people who, after a while, tend to read the words but not process any info.

I’m hoping for some kind of honors too but even better, I hope all the top 20 people get a heart attack or something so they’ll have to pick the next top 20, haha… jk :P

Carey and Loudon are also good orgo texts. I’d look through all of them and pick the one you like best. See you next year thenerdyjew and Sophia! unless I die from a heart attack >.<

So just to make sure, is Atkins good? Because some of the reviews I’ve been reading on Amazon all make it out to be confusing and terrible.

It’s not the best in terms of understandability and easiness to read, but it covers a lot of info. I just read a random chapter to see how it was: not unbearable, but some explanations are way too brief and some are unnecesarily long. you could go with Chemistry: The Central Science which is a good book, but this is less advanced than Atkins.

There’s also General Chemistry by Ebbing. Not sure how good it is.

I’ve heard from many campers that Atkins was the way to go.

Congrats to those who made!

For those who did not get to top 20, keep in mind that getting to the National level is already a decent achievement especially if you come from a state or a school with a lot of competition.

Top 150 is a great achievement too.

To those who are scoring high already and still can compete next year: start your preparations NOW.

My experience shows that it is possible to make a quantum leap in one year going from from ~local champ to ~national champ in Chem Olympiad competitions. I achieved this in a different country, but the difficulty level I believe was comparable to that of US National competitions.
PM for details if interested in more info or if you have a difficult problem I might help you with.

For those who have the Atkins book, do you think there is any significant difference between say the current 5th edition versus an older 2001 version? Amazon has the current edition at 50+ dollars price but older one at like 10-15 dollars…

Nice job to everyone who made it. Hopefully I got top 150 this year. But I’m gonna start studying a lot for next year and try for camp (even though I’ll be a senior). I read through Zumdahl this year, but I’m thinking on picking up Atkins and a organic chem book.

I was at science bowl, and was amazed at the top 4 teams. I think studying for camp would help immensely with it.

So I should get Atkins for the general chem and then what is the best orgo book?
