quick question to opera dad - did your son get into NEC? I applied for the nec/harvard dual degree too for piano but my audition unfortunately did not go particularly well, so I didn’t get in there, and was waitlisted at harvard as well.

@operadad,

congrats. where was your son planning on attending college before he got into harvard?

Yes he did get into NEC. According to them, about 20 kids a year make it into Harvard and NEC, and they only accept 5 to the program.

Univ of WI, Madison. He got a full tuition scholarship. See the music forum for other schools. With Harvard’s FA policy, we are hoping that Harvard will be close to UW Madison cost.

OperaDad, I hope your son decides to attend Harvard! If he has a Facebook account, he should definitely check out the group and feel free to add people / respond to threads that interest him.

The same goes to all future admitted students off the waitlist. Good luck!

OperaDad, around what time did they call? I like to prepare myself for rejection fully!

OperaDad, did they notify you of financial aid as well?

4:15 pm central time on Friday, May 8.

No. I hope it is in the packet they will send. Or online?

Ok yeah just wondering because I got in too but I forgot to ask them anything about financial aid I was so excited I just said thank you screamed and hung up the phone I hope there wasn’t anything else I was supposed to get -____-x

congrats! did you send in anything or have any special qualities that you think might have made you stand out?

Uhm well I talked to my interviewer and together I sent the following things in:
- letter of rec from a lawyer I interned with
- he wrote an additional letter of recommendation (said he got to know me better)
- I wrote a new essay and sent it in
- I wrote a letter/essay on “Why I belong at Harvard”
- updated resume on stuff I did senior year

My original stats were:
SAT: 2350
ACT: 35.25
SATII: Math 800/ Physics 800/ Chem 790/ Lit 780/ USH 780
GPA: 3.88 UW

Sorry I’m just way too excited I’ll try and post extra cirriculars and all that later haha :D

Son’s stats were (yes you do have a chance if you don’t have perfect scores):

SAT: 2060
ACT: 33
SAT II: Math 2 750 / Chem 730 / US Hist 660
GPA: 4.205 weighted
Class rank: 10 out of 334
Advanced placement: 9 tests when all are done

EC: Singing, trombone, musicals, youth symphony, tennis

While counting last years waitlist yield I calculated the yield to be 75% (170 accepted their waitlist admission while 227 were offered a spot in the class of 2012)

for some reason i feel totally hopeless. we need believer8 from last year’s thread to come cheer us up. haha jk :)

why would people accepted off the waitlist NOT accept harvard’s offer? just wondering.

Because Harvard wasn’t their first choice, and they got accepted at their first choice school (Yale, MIT, Stanford, etc.)

Because they got a better financial aid package somewhere else.

but the reason why people even chose to stay on the waitlist … doesnt that mean that they would take the offer if given it?

To what attenuation said: Not necessarily. Some people really want to go somewhere else more, like where they got in, but still want to see whether or not they could get in. Remember, the only thing cooler than getting into Harvard is turning Harvard down. Also, as someone else mentioned, financial aid could be a factor. Either they didn’t get a viable amount from Harvard, or they thought maybe H would pull a miracle and they were staying on the waitlist for that. Also, other waitlists might have accepted them in the meantime. Also, they might have made a trip to another school, met people who were going there, or otherwise become more attached to the school. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

Yes, but I think you still somewhat underestimate the allure of attending H for most students…

Wow! I hope they send out more decisions on Monday, I’ve been on pins and needles for months now and I just got a call this morning around 8 am PST while I was still sleeping with the caller ID reading: “Harvard ey…”

I, instantly awoken from the adrenaline coursing through my body, immediately grabbed the phone off the receiver with shaking hands and cleared my throat to shake my sleep voice:

“hello?”

Recorded Message: “Hello, this is the Harvard Eye Institute calling to …”

I almost cried…best of luck everyone haha : )

I wish they would just call me to tell me that they can’t take anybody from my region so i can stop wishing on something that will never come true
