students in my ap bio class who also took it and got down to a 14 are showing as semifinalist, so I think theres definitely a problem with the system

"I feel so bad for the people at CEE . They’re staffed entirely by volunteers and are going to be swarmed by so much nerd rage tomorrow morning when they open their email/voicemail. "

I thought so until I went to [CEE Staff | Center for Excellence in Education](CEE Staff | Center for Excellence in Education)

The CEE has 15 people on staff. Unfortunately, it looks like only one of those 15 is assigned to the USABO. They do have three and a half people assigned to fundraising or development (jargon for fundraising), as well as a Prinicipal STEM Strategist, a Public Affairs Manager, a Media Advisor, and a Policy and Strategic Coordinator. I was under the impression that USABO as well as RSI are heavily supported by (some have said run by) volunteers, but the CEE does have 15 people on staff, even if only one is assigned directly to USABO and none are assigned directly to RSI, two of the three programs and initiatives they highlight on their website.

CEE just posted on their facebook page acknowledging the discrepancy and saying that scores will be “re-posted as soon as possible.”

Did anyone’s status change?

Wow, I scored a 23, and it said semifinalist all night. This morning at around 9am EST, it changed to candidate. Twenty minutes later it became semifinalist again. What in the world…

25 makes sense now given that the scores are so well distributed, and how many normally high scorers scored substantially lower than they expected. While the cutoff is (I imagine) still unconfirmed, I’d like to apologize to topgun for doubting him/her.

I do not know the top scores. Only CEE knows.

I feel like if they made a mistake on the status they should also reconfirm the scores too. And I wonder if they can fix everything before semifinals? I mean because they have to fix ALOT of statuses, possibly the scores as well.

Here is a extract from Facebook page of USABO:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/USA-Biology-Olympiad/174800742579037
The Center for Excellence in Education appreciates your patience as IT works to correct the posting error of the identification of Semifinalists. The cutoff score for Semifinalists is 25 and above. If your score is 24 or below, you are not a Semifinalist.

Well, now that scores are out, anyone want to discuss questions? Are the scores online also confirmed to be accurate because I thought I would get a higher score…

I’m kind of new to this Bio stuff. I know the AAPT posts lists of the names of all semi-finalists for the US Physics Olympiad and the AMC posts lists of the names of all USAMO and USAJMO qualifiers. Will the CEE post publicly viewable lists of the names and schools of all USABO semi-finalists?

They have never done it ( publicly viewable lists of the names and schools of all USABO semi-finalists) before. Even AMC has stopped posting the names of AIME qualifiers, which they used to do before!

Has CEE posted the histogram of distribution of scores?

I really wish CEE publishes the list of semi-finalists just like AMC and Physics. It would have been so much transparent that way.

Opinion559 - AMC posts the list of AIME quals - they have two lists Dist Honors List and Honors List.

Physics Olympiad is the best - they know how to PR.

Alright, I checked with my teacher - cutoff was 24, avg score was about 16, and highest score was 42

Distribution of scores can be accessed by your teacher: there was 1 42, 1 41, 1 40, 2 39’s, 2 38’s, no 37’s, and then the pack followed.

Also the best way to encourage the CEE to post a list of semifinalists publicly is to send them an email asking them to do so if they have the time and that you and many others would really appreciate it.

My score still is not on my account… Should I try calling the CEE? Or Does my teacher have my score?

Darksigma, that sounds like its last year’s distribution.

@ WoollyMammoth

It could also be this year’s distribution since the cutoff is pretty similar.
