*"Official" 2013 USABO*

Is there a study guide or test bank for Raven Biology of Plants?

NSQ!!! Youā€™re back :DDDDDDDD And thank you for the great information!
The thing is, where I live, there is pretty much only one college building where the proffessors work. If I have to have appropriate insurance and paperwork for my current prof.'s lab, wonā€™t it be the same?

Nevertheless, Iā€™ll try asking a few other profs

Once again, thank you so much!

I recently acquired ā€œMolecular Biology of Genesā€ ā€œRaven Plant Biologyā€ and ā€œModern Genetic Analysis.ā€

Is it okay to use them conjuctively with my Campbell Biology (9th) textbook or hold all of them until I make Semis?

Also is Student Study Guide for Campbell Biology (9th) a good prep book to use with the main textbook?

@Mansu007: Is the Student Study Guide for 9th edition different from the one for 8th edition?

First of all: NSQ replied back to me! Thanks!

Second of all: I am aware that in the 2011 and 2012 USABO threads the 6th edition was stated to be ā€œokay to useā€, however, I was just wondering if it is okay to use that edition currently. Anyway, it doesnā€™t really matter now since I got the 9th edition of C&R :)

Third of all: Thanks for responding MathGuy777, I am kind of new to commenting on CC (as you can see from my post count) and I guess I was just overreacting to a slow thread. Anyways, I guess we are all too busy studyingā€¦

P.S. What note methodology are you guys implementing your studying process? I know NSQ mentioned Anki, but are you guys just using the C&R study guides or something else?

Thanks everyone.

@NSQ Do top USABO performers also do research?

@MathGuy777 I donā€™t know if this will help you, but in my area biology professors willing to accept high school students are sort of a hot commodity and usually end up receiving tons of emails and eventually end up helping multiple students from my high school, so if possible you should ask some of your peers, who has done research before, for help in trying to contact a professor.

Also, as mentioned earlier, try sending emails to multiple professors.

Just my 2 cents. ( I have done research with professors before, however, there are 5 colleges in my neck of the woods, so there are a lot of options)

P.S. How are you guys balancing research with USABO studying? I end up sleeping for 6 hours on weekdaysā€¦during the f**king summer. :frowning:
Oh well, back to studyingā€¦

@Opinion: Hi! Sorry for my late reply! I apparently unintentionally ignored you. I just look at the last post, usually.

ANYWAYS, Iā€™m sorry! I only have the 9th edition. NO CLUE what the 8th edition is like.
There are ā€œMaking Connectionsā€ questions added to C+R 9e, I believe. Unless thatā€™s in the 8e, alsoā€¦ :3

BTW, I donā€™t think Biology of Plants has study guides. At least the one I borrowed doesnā€™t, but this oneā€™s really really really really. Old. :D

@starchow: Haha, no problem! Iā€™m not that experienced myself. :smiley:
If you donā€™t mind me asking, what region do you live in? (East coast, New England Area,etc.). Where I live, there arenā€™t that many biology proffessors who accept high school students; then again, theyā€™ve never had much requests (except me, lol, cause Iā€™m so stubborn.) Yeah, I donā€™t know anyone whoā€™s done research, but where I live, if people find out, they tell everyone and everyone tries to do it. Kinda annoying XP

I should probably do that, but my prof might take it rudely. She didnā€™t necessarily reject me, itā€™s just that she said I can, ā€œcontinue writing reports and visiting her to discuss themā€. Basically an internship minus lab work. Which I donā€™t know is good enough (although Iā€™m probably taking more than granted).
I dunno, in this situation, is contacting multiple profs really considerate or worth it?

My response to P.S.:
LOL. I feel so lazy. Iā€™m juggling with so much stuff, Iā€™m kind of procrastinating on Campbell, because Iā€™m currently doing three online classes, finish 4 long summer books required (1 requires a huge project due before school), and lots of studying for other subjects. Which is really stressful, because I love biology so much (not kidding).
^ This is all purely ranting; Iā€™m not in the best mood, and probably tomorrow, Iā€™ll realize that I was blaming stuff that is really my responsibility.

But yeah, I read 21-22 Chapters this summer. READ. No notes. Little understanding. Failing, basically. Iā€™m trying to finish about 8 more chapters by tomorrow. Iā€™m taking an AP Bio class starting this upcoming fall, so I will use practice questions from that.
(yes, I seriously did buy Campbell much earlier than needed :P)

I managed to search up some open exams, so I will take my sweet time with thoseā€¦
Ha. Ha. Ha. I sleep about 4 hrs sometimes. Itā€™s probably unhealthy. And Iā€™m not even 15 yet. WHY DO I SLEEP SO LITTLE (RAGE -_-")

Hi all and good luck studying! :)

I will try to come by every now and then and answer some questionsā€¦

@AspiringBioGod: I donā€™t think thereā€™s a special name to memorize for the uptake of anionsā€¦Cation exchange is special because the cations bind to the negatively-charged clay / other soil particles, so your plants have to take an extra step to ā€œfreeā€ them. Anions on the other hand donā€™t bind to these negatively-charged soil particles, and are already free in solutionā€¦transporting them in probably falls under one of your ā€˜regularā€™ passive or active transport mechanisms? Interesting question, though.

@Opinion559: Hmm I donā€™t know of study guides / test banks for Ravenā€™s Plants, though I havenā€™t looked particularly hard for them. There may definitely be some out thereā€¦

@Mansu007: It actually just depends on what better suits your style of studying. Personally, I like going through Campbell bit by bit and then reading a bit more in depth with one of the books you mentioned (gives you a better explanation + makes things more interesting, as well!). The problem with this, of course, is that it takes longerā€¦but as long as you cover enough Campbell to make it past the Open, you should be fine. If you prefer getting through Campbell first and then reviewing with your other books, that should work, too. Oh and - as has been mentioned before, the plant book is the most important :)

The Student Study Guide is too shallow (I think) for your purposes - though it may come in handy if youā€™re encountering a chapter for the first time, or something.

On the differences between editions and allā€¦I think the biggest changes are in taxonomy? Which doesnā€™t play too big of a role untilā€¦maybe camp, even. So donā€™t worry if your edition is ā€œoutdated.ā€ I do notice that in the newer ones, there seem to be a lot more of those ā€œInquiryā€ boxes (the ones that describe experiments and such?) as you probably know, you donā€™t have to memorize these. Instead, read them and try to grasp the logic involved behind the experimental set-upā€¦thisā€™ll start to train you for questions where they throw an experiment and some data at you, and you have to draw conclusions!

Thanks CooMassieBlue! That makes a lot of sense.
Also, I agree on your comment about the editions of Campbells: I was using the 5th edition, and when I switched to the edition Iā€™m using now, I found much more taxonomy. Hence the panicking :P.

Also @CooMassieBlue, have you taken the USABO before? If you have, how well did you score and which level did you get to? You seem fairly knowledgeable.

@MathGuy, good luck with everything! :D

Thanks! Haha, you too! :)

Hello!

I think I asked this question already but do you think using specified textbooks like Raven Plant and Albertsā€™ The Cell as a reference to Campbell Bio or hold them until making Semi?

And is anyone using Study Guide for Campbell Bio (either 8th or 9th e/d)? I got one from another student but I am not so sure as to how to utilize that study guide book with Campbellā€¦

^Only Campbell textbook for open, nothing more

I donā€™t remember specifics about this, sorry :smiley:

@Opinion559 It exists: http://www.amazon.com/Test-Bank-Biology-Plants-Raven/dp/0879015195

@MathGuy777

Oh, okay. Iā€™m not sure then - maybe itā€™s a facility-wide thing, in which case um thereā€™s programs that are aimed at getting high school students into labs, but then Iā€™m not sure.

And seriously youā€™re a volunteer. You can quit whenever.

(Also no lab Iā€™ve ever been in allowed me to do much the moment I walked in. There were weeks of doing useless work until they were willing to trust me)

Also - sleep more if you can? Not sleeping really doesnā€™t help retention.

@starchow ā€¦I did chemistry research, not biology research. Some finalists are ISEF finalists too, sometimes not in biology. (I did Siemens and not ISEF).

@Mansu007

I havenā€™t read the two genetics books you talked about, but Ravenā€™s Plants is fair game.

And use your best judgment about what to study first.

@CoomassieBlue

I have a feeling I know who you are. Tell me, do you know the name of the lobster?

Thanks @NSQ though $59 seems pretty high for a used paperback.

Do I have to know the taxonomies for dinosaurs and their eras?

Also do I have to have a clear understanding and memorization of experiments shown in
Campbell Bio?

@Opinion
yeah, I didnā€™t know it existed until really recently (aka when I googled for it right before making that comment)

@Mansu

Use your best judgment?

WHAT THE CRAP NSQ, WHY ARE YOU SO AMAZING!!!
Anyways, thank you so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so soso so so so so so so so so so so so much! Iā€™ll follow your advice :D

The current prof. I was talking about is doing stem cell research so Iā€™m currently writing a paper on iPSCsā€¦ one sentence complete !@%^&*

Woohoo! I like the idea of more sleep.

EVERYBODY, listen to NSQā€™s advice; NSQ=Goddess

@MathGuy777 Are you going into 9th grade and taking AP Bio? If so, that is impressive.

Not trying to pick on you or anythingā€¦:)

@NSQ just out of curiosity what is the full name of the A&P textbook.
Also, I have: Life, the Science of Biology 7th edition by William K. Purves, David Sadava, et al. do you think that this book is good/bad/better than Campbell for USABO studying?

Woot, woot 100th post!!! glances at time ā€œcrap, gotta studyā€ :)
