Comments: The story I told in my application was likely a contributor. Three years ago, at the age of 26, I was working as a technical analyst for the Florida Association of Realtors making quite a bit of money and sending a lot of it to take care of my mother, who lived in a nursing home. Because of complications in her life I was the only person with the financial capability to make sure she was well cared for. A big chunk of my paychecks and time each week went into speaking to her and her caretakers to be sure she was content and comfortable. She passed away in 2011 and left me wondering what to do with my life. You see, I dropped out of high-school to help my grandmother (rest her soul) care for my mother by getting a job and slowly became fairly successful in information technology. Suddenly I found myself able to consider school again as an option and take care of myself. I attended Valencia College for two years on loans to live and told this story in my application. I never took a standardized test and I had to get my GED to enter college (even though the work I did before that didn’t require it and I made a good amount of money in Information Technology).

Attending: Yale

Comments: I think my extracurriculars made all the difference. Even if you don’t like your school, commit to it and involve yourself on campus. Schools are looking for people who are leaders and have made a difference on their campuses, so get involved. I’m still shocked at the incredible acceptances I received, and had to make the incredibly hard decision between Georgetown (my number one all throughout the process) and Yale (my top school since I was a kid, which I never expected to get into). But, I chose Yale and couldn’t be more excited.

Comments: Pretty happy with how everything worked out after not having the best experiences in high school. Whatever college you might be going to, it’s going to be what make you of it. So it’s crucial to get involved. You will be astounded by what connections and skills you will gain. Don’t ever give up! Persistence will pay off in the end. Good luck everybody!

Comments: Im really happy too with the way things turned out. I have to say, one of the most gratifying feelings after working so hard in school, is getting accepted to the schools you applied to. Very excited for my future in one of the world’s fashion capitals. Making a decision soon.

Current college: mid-ranked midwestern LAC

ECs: strong orchestra background, honor society leadership, AmeriCorps, feminist club

Applied to: Barnard, Brown, Bryn Mawr, Mt. Holyoke, Swarthmore, Wellesley, and Wesleyan
Accepted: Barnard, Mt. Holyoke, Wellesley, Wesleyan
Rejected: Bryn Mawr (???)
Waitlisted: Brown, Swarthmore (I removed myself from the wait list)

Attending: Wesleyan (best FA package of the bunch, I needed at least 1/2 off CoA)
If Brown accepts me and offers a comparable aid package, I’ll go to Brown.

Comments: It came down to Wellesley and Wes, as Barnard’s FA package was laughable. However, Wes worked out better financially and I had fewer questions as to whether I’d fit in or have a good social life. It was hard to give up the prestige of Wellesley, but I’m very glad to be attending Wes in the fall after I was waitlisted last year!

As far as why I got in–my essays were very clear and admittedly quite powerful. I think it’s infinitely easier to write about yourself after a year of college. I’m a lot more directed and have a better idea of what I require. Anyhow, what a process! I’m so so so grateful.

Waitlisted: Haverford, Rice

Attending: Vanderbilt (most likely)

Comments: As a recent freshman, it was REALLY hard to have amazing EC’s and leadership positions. I should also admit there’s nothing special about me – just a traditional, straight-out-of-HS student who wants to transfer for a better school and a major not offered in current school. My essays were also not very specific; they stated a general goal in the future concerning a certain field, but nothing too specific, which hurt me, I think.

Be prepared for quite a stressful application process. You’re on your own, and chances are your school will know nothing about transferring out, nor will they have the services you need to complete your application readily available to you; I had to ask the Dean of Students to go out of his way to complete the Registrar Report, a document which seemed foreign to him. The most stressful thing will be the thought of leaving your friends behind. Whether you enjoyed your previous school or hated it, unless you become a hermit inside your dorm, you will make friends who will grow on you and find incredibly special and irreplaceable, making the decision to leave that much harder.

Current college: Community College
Entering as (soph/jr): sophomore
Major: Marketing/International Relations
High School GPA: 3.2
SAT/ACT Scores: 2170
College GPA: 3.7
Hooks: None
US/Intl: US
ECs: Founder of refugee-related non profit (attended Clinton Global Initiative University 2014), internship for North Korean refugees in Washington DC, founder of community service club, student government senator, English tutor, volunteer at several non profit organizations

Applied to: Cornell, UPenn, NYU, University of Virginia, University of San Diego, George Washington University, University of Texas at Austin, American University
Accepted: Cornell, USD, GWU, UT Austin, American
Rejected: UPenn, NYU, UVA
Waitlisted: None

Attending: George Washington University

My dream school was UT Austin due to the awesomeness of Austin, particularly for its great startup culture, and I couldn’t have been happier to have been accepted. Unfortunately the financial aid sucked (especially cause I’m an out of state student). I was really considering Cornell but GWU gave the most aid hands down so I decided to go there. Although I wasn’t super thrilled to be heading to DC at first, I now realize that I’ll have a ton of access to amazing opportunities in the city. All in all, going to community college was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made and the transfer application process, while daunting and stressful at times, was totally worth it.

Current college: Came from a CC in WA
Entering as (soph/jr): Soph
Major: Pharmacy
High School GPA: 3.7
SAT/ACT Scores: 1710/29
College GPA: 3.4

Applied to: UW, WSU, SPU
Accepted: WSU, SPU
Rejected: UW
Waitlisted: None

Attending: SPU

Comments: I changed my intended major after applying to all these schools and my personal statement was weak, I’ll be attempting to get into UW again as I believe the connections available there are worth trying for. I’ll have about 90 credits after my fall quarter at Seattle Pacific.

Current college: top 40 school by usnwr
Entering as (soph/jr): jr
Major: neuroscience
High School GPA: 3.3
SAT/ACT Scores: 31
College GPA: 3.94

Applied to: Penn, Brown, Yale, UChicago, NW, Emory, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, Stanford, Cornell, Columbia
Accepted: Vanderbilt, Emory
Rejected: Penn, Yale, UChicago, NW, Stanford, Columbia
Waitlisted: Brown, Georgetown

Attending: Emory

Comments: definitely disappointed with the rejections, definitely happy with the acceptances, and definitely was anxiously waiting on the waitlists. It’s been on hell of a ride!

Current college:CUNY College of Staten Island
Entering as (soph/jr):Junior
Major: Mathematics
High School GPA:3.45
SAT/ACT Scores:1770
SAT II Scores:N/A
College GPA:3.581
Transferable GPA (if applicable):N/A
Major GPA:3.89
IGETC:N/A
TAG/TAP:N/A
Hooks: N/A
US/Intl:US
ECs: Peer Network Engagement Intern, Treasurer of Hillel club, Track team, Math Club

Applied to: UF, FSU, University of Texas at Austin, University of Rochester, Stony Brook University, Binghamton University, Elizabethtown College, BU, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, RPI, NYU, Brandeis University, University of Connecticut (Storrs Campus), University of Pennsylvania.
Accepted: University of Rochester, Stony Brook University, Binghamton University, Elizabethtown College, BU, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, RPI, University of Connecticut (Storrs Campus)
Rejected: UF, FSU, University of Texas at Austin, NYU, Brandeis University, University of Pennsylvania
Waitlisted: none

Attending: Stony Brook University

Comments: UF didn’t review my transfer application even though I kept calling and asking them to review it. I called once every 1-2 weeks for 2 months and no one ever reviewed my application (Very Unprofessional). FSU said I didn’t meet their English transfer requirements and I didn’t want to take a summer class. University of Texas at Austin said my overall GPA was a little lower than their cutoff. Both NYU and Brandeis are need aware and I don’t have much money so that probably influenced their decision to deny me. UPENN was an obvious reach school.

Unfortunately most schools didn’t give me any aid. BU gave me 10,000 and Elizabethtown College gave me 20,000. Because I was an In-State student, the cheapest school came out to Be Stony Brook University. Stony Brook Accepted me in to their Engineering School as an Applied Math and Statistics major. All other schools accepted me in to their College of arts and sciences as a math major. Interestingly University of Rochester’s Engineering school is attached to their College of arts and Sciences. I picked Stony Brook for the price and quality mathematics education. I’m going to double major with Computer Science.

This was a very difficult decision for me mainly because I feel like BU and UR would have been better options because I’d be able to have a social life and get a quality education from a brand name school but I can settle for Stony Brook.

Current college: De Anza College
Entering as: Junior
Major: Urban Planning
High School GPA: 2.65, did not take required classes for college. Graduated 4 years before beginning college.
US/Intl: US Citizen
ECs: Job (college library)

Applied to: SFSU (first choice), HSU, CSULB, SLO
Accepted: SFSU, HSU
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

Attending: SFSU

Comments: CSULB and presumably SLO have supplementary applications. Since I have already chosen to attend SFSU, I am not filling those applications out, and will presumably be rejected from both schools on those grounds.

Current college: California Community College
Entering as (soph/jr): Junior
Major: Electrical Engineering
High School GPA: 3.8 unweighted (didn’t matter for my transfer applications as I only applied within the UC system)
SAT Scores: 2300+ (again, didn’t matter for my transfer applications)
SAT II Scores: All 750 and above (ditto)
College GPA: 3.7 at my CC (3.6 when I applied), but also had a disastrous first year at a university overseas where I ended up with a 2.4.
IGETC: Partial certification; only missing one course
TAG/TAP: Yes (UCSC)
Hooks: Female engineering student - not sure if this was really a huge factor
US/Intl: International
ECs: Engineering club treasurer and secretary; volunteer at annual science fair/exhibition intended to stimulate underprivileged elementary school students’ interest in STEM fields; science club member; Phi Theta Kappa

Applied to: UCSB, UCI, UCSD, UCD, UCSC
Accepted: UCSB, UCI, UCSC
Rejected: None
Waitlisted: UCSD, UCD (removed myself from both waitlists as I had no intention of attending either school)

Attending: UCI

Comments: Going from being a bright and hardworking student in HS to barely managing not to be kicked out at my first university really took a toll on my self-esteem and general mental health. My failure ultimately came down to a combination of the school not being a good fit for me at all, and my own lack of goals/direction. I then went to a California CC for two years and did decently there, but was afraid that my GPA from my first school would cause me to be rejected everywhere. I was very pleasantly surprised when that turned out not to be true. Hopefully my results will give hope to anyone who had a rough start in college - all is not lost!
