"Official" 2014 USABO thread

That’s an extremely high cutoff. aren’t they usually 130-140 range?

Isn’t missing around 60-70 points usually around the cutoff?

I think we should recognize the top 10% of the semifinalists >.<

can we create a google doc to try to reconstruct the test?

let’s not do that just in case. Maybe like next friday. (schools getting extensions)

more like, i really don’t want to hear/talk about the test anymore…

Personally, I did’t think much of part A, didn’t think part B was terribly difficult. And then part C came.

@chess LOL same here

It would be great if there could be some recognition for top 10%, or top 150 or 100. All the other olympiads have some recognition between semis and camp, and I think a lot of people give up on bio since its camp or nothing.

Yeah I got destroyed by part C as well…

Now I have to make someone send me Part C. It wasn’t done when I saw it (I’m a stickler for spelling and grammar, so I think they’ve started giving me the first read-through so I tidy it up for everyone else).

But if it was that bad…remember, you don’t have to beat the test, you just have to beat all but 19 of your fellow test-takers. =)

Hmm. I think I got lucky with Part C. I’m pretty sure I did alright (and by that I mean there’s a sliver of hope for more than a 0)… If they give lots and lots of partial credit, that is, haha.

Wait what? I felt really good about part C!

Predictions? I found part C badly weighted

Definitely agree with that^
the point value for a number of part C questions were highly questionable given the amount of effort put into the answers or the scope of knowledge tested. like, why should a single question set be worth like 15+ mc?

Is part C always this bad?

Compared to the past open ended parts, I don’t think so. Also, the past ones had more balanced weights regarding points.

Yeah last part was weighted waaaay too much.

When can we discuss specific questions from the test? Also, what are your predictions for the cutoff this year?

Feel free to discuss privately (but MAKE SURE the other guy has actually taken it) but let’s just be extra careful not to repeat the same mistake and give a good safe leeway of 1-1.5 weeks.

typically how many days before scores are released do they notify finalists?
