Thanks @eswara20. @MamaBear16 says there was an email, but I did not get one
I was looking around at the 2014 website, and just a cursory glance at the 2014 website, I could not find one person who got semi but did not get a badge. In fact, everybody who got any badge seems to have gotten an Entry Badge, it seems from a random search. Though oddly, about 200-300 fewer people were listed as having Entry Badges this year. I’m just feeling pessimistic no
My D didn’t show up on the website until this afternoon when she followed the link on the email and “accepted” the badge. So there could be more kids out there like mine, who didn’t realize that this wasn’t a standard email and didn’t respond to it. I’m still hopeful they are sending out more,
@MamaBear16 Thank you for relaying your daughter’s experience. Going back to the website, the list does seem to look a little longer than it did this morning. I guess people are also starting to upload pictures. I’m still guessing I didn’t receive an Entrant Badge because I didn’t get an email. Although one of my friends got an Entrant Badge per the website, and he claims he never got an email. I don’t understand why I wouldn’t have gotten one. I thought everybody got at least that for submitting a valid application
I hope everything would be okay for all of us in the end–I know that they updated the people with badges at different times since when they just sent out the email, there were definitely fewer people posted with entrant badges on the site. Maybe they’re still putting up more qualifying entrants there–we won’t really know.
Either way, Intel STS should be contacting everyone within two days (or a few more?) for the semifinalist status.
If you can’t find the email, it might be because the email landed in your ‘Spam’ folder back in December. If so, since emails in ‘Spam’ folder get deleted every xx amount of days, it might have been deleted without you knowing. Again, good luck everyone!
P.S. Any MIT/Caltech/UChicago EA admits here?
You must login to your SSP account, which “claims” your badge and you will appear on the “all earners” page.
Login: https://student.societyforscience.org/ssp-intel-digital-badging
As more people login and claim, the list grows longer. Hope that clears up some confusion.
Results are supposed to be posted on the website tomorrow.
@rowerruns by now all of last years badges have been updated. What i meant was at that THIS time last year, before semis were announced, many people didnt have the entrant badge. But of course intel fixed that in due time for their year.
Excited everybody? We should give brief intros of our research.
Entrant badges have been posted. I think Student Initiative, Research Report, and Semifinalist badges come out tomorrow at 12 PM ET.
Seeing that I didn’t qualify for Siemens semifinalist, and haven’t done any prior science fair competitions (with ISEF or Google Science Fair), and only worked on my project for around a month, I honestly don’t think I’ll have much chance, especially since like 300+ people get Siemens semis. Also, I think like pretty much all 75 RSIers apply for Intel, so that only leaves 225 spots for us common folks. Anyhow, we’ll see when the results come out tomorrow.
Edit: I also forgot to mention that I got the Entrant badge e-mail on 12/19/14 for all others out there. I also got my t-shirt + laptop stickers in the mail a couple days ago.
I believe I just claimed my badge today online, but got the email (plus stickers/shirt) a while back. It doesn’t matter that you signed in right, as long as you got the initial notification from intel?
How big of a deal is semifinalist?
Got semis! Didn’t get anything fur Siemens though
Same! Is this something we should send to Regular Decision colleges?
Sorry for the ridiculous question, but how are we notified if we were selected as semifinalists?
Yeah. I don’t see the semifinalist badge on their website.
@icecreamangel the semifinalist list is on the website! I’ll try to copy and paste the link, best of luck!
Thanks!
Semifinalist!
I’m really surprised because my GPA was/is awfully low (in a competitive magnet program, but also had some medical issues that came up), my counselor submitted my recommendations late (this is actually my fault for not badgering her enough), and one of my grades was wrong on the transcript I sent (my transcript said I had a D in Biology second semester junior year!) and Intel didn’t let me resubmit the correct one since I only found out after the deadline (not my fault the grade was entered in wrong, but I should have checked my transcript beforehand).
I did spend a lot of time on my application though, and had lots of help from my mentor and supervisor at NIH. I guess what I’m saying is congratulations to the people who were selected, and if you weren’t, do keep in mind that most of us had lots of outside help (my dad is conveniently a scientist) and that there is a lot of sheer luck involved, so don’t feel discouraged if you’re truly passionate and love science!
Can we ask them why our paper fell below the mark? I.e. comments made by judges/what improvements could be made.
@somebody2015: I don’t think they would do that otherwise they would be overwhelmed with requests, and entrants might disagree with some reasons, possibly making it heated. Though I think knowing what the judges though about your paper would certainly be helpful! If you have a mentor, you could ask him/her to critique your work.
Does anyone know how important the student initiative and research report badges are? Are (eventual) finalists more likely to receive them? Thanks!
