Official ACT April 8th Thread

evilasiandictator, you can choose which scores to report to colleges, unlike in the SAT. I never understood why people would cancel ACT scores...I can understand SAT though.

Kieran,
A trick I find for the reading is to just skip over the material and go straight to the questions. The questions are always directly on the material, and usually give you a point to reference. Instead of wasting time trying to understand the figures (which I often can't do), use the question to help you interpret the graphs etc. and find the information you need. It isn't about understanding the concepts, it is about getting the answer.

Hey Annie, I unfortunately sent my scores to colleges when I registered, so I don't think that some of the Ivies I put down would look favorably upon my dreadful ACT score this time, especially when I got a decent score of 31 the first time around.

Edit on my post, not reading but for science. I read the passages 1st for reading.

That's basically what I did for the science. I was able to finish science in a nick of time.

Yeah I did that for science too and I finished with a few minutes to spare.

Kieran - this was my practice ACT too (unless if I do well enough, which is unlikely). I'm taking it again in June if I think I can improve enough in time.

what do you think the curves will be?

I don't know about curves for everything, but it'd be nice if -5-10 on Reading and Science were 30+! Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Annie, I totally wish that'd happen. I doubt it though. Oh, man. I want to make a 34 in June.

Damn, that was my first time taking the ACT, and it was rough. I used the Real ACT Prep Guide to prepare, and those practice tests were WAY easier than the actual test. Science/Reading with rock me, Math I missed like 4-5 because I didnt have time. How could you do that one with the S=(rt-3)/(rt-s) or whatever? And how do you do the jog problem?

Also, on reading, what strats did you use? Did you guys just read the questions and then answer them w/o ever reading the passage?
Thanks

I was guessing through the science and making guesses according to what I read (did not look back at passage) in reading ...I had no time.
I agree it was harder than the real act prep book.

For Reading I just skimmed as lightly as possible and focused on the questions. I finished just in time.

How was the cube one 0,rt2,1? I missed have looked at it wrong.

I hope I get a good score! ...I dont think that will happen....it I get a 27+ on todays test. I will be happy...it was brutal.

what the one woth the 3 d plane

0, sq root 2, 1?

holy crap science was hard....but i think everyone established that already... :)

On the cube one I used process of elimination. I knew sqroot of 2,1 was the ending, and that was the only one that had it.

for the S=(r-t) thing or whatever, I just picked 1 and 2 for r, and t, and solved for S. I got -1. Then I plugged in 1 and 2 into all of the answers to try and find which one came out to -1. I can't remember which one it was (maybe C I think?). This technique was the only useful thing I picked up in my Princeton Review SAT course.

i didnt' think science was that bad... it just might be me though. I got killed on the reading though, especially the third passage about storytelling/taletelling. What was that about? I still don't get it

what was the answer to the first quesiton on the story telling thing?

D?

Yeah, for the storytelling one, did you say it was the relationship between the storyteller and the audience? Or was it the art of storytelling?

Actually idc cause I forgot what I put down. :P
