Official ACT Math Thread April 2013

@superduck
I think it was -3. Someone check me on that.

Was the trig solving question cos theta? That’s what I got. I believe the question was sec^2 theta • sin theta / cos theta.

i got sec theta for the trig one

I also got sec theta

I guessed sec theta.

I feel like a sir right now.

For the BMI question, was it G or H.

@Superduck
I got -3 too. it was (x-4)(x ± _ )
-4* _ = -12
So the blank would be 3.
x+3 = 0
x = -3

@Hendrix
Sec theta
sin/cos was canceled with sin/cos and you were left with 1/cos

@alpha
BMI was kw/h^2
directly proportional to weight (multiplication)
inversely proportional to height^2 (division)

Did you put G or H though?

What was the one where the radius AC was 15 cm long and then chord like BD was 10 meters long and you had to find what AD was or something? That’s the only one I could’ve gotten wrong. Praying -1 is curved to a 36 but not hopeful.

What was answer to question with variables k,w,h (height and weight) and inverse/direct? I don’t remember if it said inversely/directly proportional or an inverse/direct relationship.

@ efeens

The radius was the hypotenuse of a right triangle formed with the chord. It was a hypotenuse of 15 and leg of 5 so you had to find the other leg

@efeens44
Tricky, but you were probably too focused on the intersecting chords to look at the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse was the radius. Pythagorean theorem found the other side. Don’t recall the exact answer but I’m sure someone does.

@doctor
Just answered this 3 posts above.

the answer was 10root 2

What was the one with the shapes and diagonal? I put rectangle…

^^ rectangle

Holy **** was it really 10root2? I just put all the choices into my calculator and the next closest to 10root2 (like 14.3 or something) was around 11 so I just guessed. Holy **** I’m 2/2 on my guesses, 36!!

I’m crushed right now. I was thinking angles of diagonals not the actual diagonals because of a practice question I did like 2 days earlier. I chose rhombus like an idiot. I’m at -3 right now from two of the dumbest mistakes and 1 error. hopefully ill get a 35 with the curve on math.
Literally dying right now.

But yeah efeens it was radical 200 simplified.

I can’t believe this. If I did well enough on science/the curve is generous enough, I got a 36 composite.

The question about a was definitely 0<a<30. 15-30 was not an option. I really hope the math curve is somewhat generous, because it definitely was harder than usual and I’ve missed two so far, ugh.

Lol i put 10 root 2 because it was close to 15, which was the length of the whole line
I have like 2 wrong i think
