Official ACT Math Thread April 2013

@thelemonisinplay

Thank you, that was very helpful!

How many times has ACT made 59/60 a36?

Never on any of the practice tests have I seen a 59/60 be a 36…but I’ve only taken like 3 so don’t mind me haha

@pk12ab what letter was the sin cos one?

@LikeASir You’re welcome, and thank YOU for explaining those two math questions to me.

Im looking at my “Real ACT prep guide” and out of the 5 tests, 3 are 60/36, 1 is 59-60/36, and the last one is 58-60/36.
Hope that helps Alpha.

Student: Not sure but it was c or d or e, I think d.

I feel like I did very bad in math, guessed about 15 questions! :frowning: what’s the chances that out of those 15, C is the right answer?

What’s the expected curve for this one? LOL I accidently put rhombus

Do they score the tests with a curve?! First time taking it, seemed harder than the practice book in terms of the math section

Does anyone remember the question about like, animals and they were in circle diagrams and in percent? There were three questions regarding that, do you guys remember the answer and letters?

Student: I can’t tell you but you probably got a handful right. I would in the future try to cancel out the dumb answers and then choose from the remaining. A little less luck, and a possibility to get more right. (There wont be that many C answers!)
Which question in particular? I remember I got 15/215 for the final one regarding the pets.

Nick: Yes there is a curve! It changes for every test. For a 36 the curve can be anywhere from 60 correct for a 36 to a 58-60 correct for a 36. They need to have the percentiles stay constant throughout the different test dates so the worse everyone did on the math, which seems to be the case, the harder the curve.

Alpha: Me too :frowning: I feel your pain. Probably a higher curve than usual judging by what people thought on here so far.

^ For the last question on pet, I got 105/225…

yeah you had to add 15 to the fish because 45% of 200 was 90, 90+15=105. 105 fish/225 total animals.

I got 105/225 as well. 45% had fish to begin with, which is 90 and then the additional 25 people included 15 with fish.

That could have been it, I don’t remember well. before/200 then add the amount yes from additional study to numerator and amount total in additional study for denominator.
Now I’m second guessing myself, did you have to change around the values of the initial one?

EDIT: Okay I think I did that. I don’t remember honestly. Hopefully test-taking me did it right.

Guys say the letter!! Lol

Yeah, I found this test to be more difficult than usual. I think I missed about 2 or 3.
For the stem-leaf plot graph, I got 53. Did anyone else get that??
Also, what was the answer to the question about the asymptote??

Yeah 105/225 was the answer for the fish one.
Does anyone remember the answer to the question asking the area of the pyramid?

And thanks pk… Really no C’s? People tell me B and C are most common…

Cba: 52, it was between 51 and 53.
Asymtote was -x

Ally: area of pyramid was 340, If you want me to explain why just ask.

Student: Well think about it this way, if 1/4th of the questions will be each letter, then out of 15 questions you would expect there to be only 4 Cs, which means that you got 11 wrong going by probability.
