HS Senior in South Carolina taking the ACT for the first time. I've taken the SAT a bunch of times, and did alright. I studied for the last few weeks leading up to the test with the Princeton Review book.

Am I the only one that didn't have any trouble at all on the Science section? I didn't run out of time or anything. It's good news (I want to apply to some top-tier science schools), but just totally unexpected.

If my subscores for the math section were 17/18/16, does this mean I missed 3 questions? It means I missed at least two I guess. I still got a 35 though. Is this an unusual curve?

19382,
No, it doesn't mean you missed 3; but yeah, you must've missed at least 2. If you got a 35 I'd bet you only missed 2. That sounds like a pretty typical curve to me.

i got a 10 on my ACT essay.

WOW! Are you serious? I also got a 9 on the essay, with a 35 composite. I guess I can't figure out the writing section at all. My friend, who is by admission the WORST writer of my group of friends, got an 11 and everyone else got lower.

Yup, but I think luck was on my side that Saturday.

I'm not sure what to say about the writing section. Since most students will never have to actually write an essay under the same circumstances, I barely studied for it and decided to try to wing it on test day. Unfortunately, I didn't even finish my final paragraph. Maybe your friend just has the ability to put a lot of semi-coherent material down on paper under a lot of stress.

I got a 11 on the essay too and didn't prepare for it as such. I think the key to the ACT essay is to come up with solid examples and just writing and writing!!!! The longer you write the better! In my June ACT, I wrote 2.5 pages and got a 10. In September, I wrote 3 pages and got a 11 ( although I think I supported my essay better this time since it was an easier topic imo )

I've read that length has a strong correlation with essay score. For my essay, I think what I did write was relatively high quality, but the short length (about 1.5 pages) hurt my score.

I've taken the ACT twice: the first time essay was two pages and got an 11, second time essay was 2 1/4 pages and got a 12. I actually thought my first essay was much better; so maybe there is a correlation between essay length and score?
