Wahine - congrats to you for getting in - my point was to say that minorities and jocks and those who have had to "struggle" take priority at UCLA. I am not saying that you should feel bad about getting in but you should realize that the UC's are notorious for taking people with lower scores just so they can get them for sports or because they are minority. UCLA is in that LA region and many kids who are from a lower socio-economic background who have less than great scores flock to apply there. Of course there is the exception to how there are kids who rise above their struggles and have great scores but UCLA is known to take kids who have had to struggle. Like it or not, thats the way it is. Call me sour grapes, whatever. But my post was intended to tell about admissions to UCLA, not to make minorities feel bad about their admission. If you got accepted, have less than great scores/grades, and are minority, on financial aid, are first gen. or are poor, you are naive to think that that did not have a part to play in admission to UCLA. Embrace it and enjoy Westwood.

Your "post was intended to tell about admissions to UCLA[...]" yet you failed miserably in attempting to judge how admissions work at UCLA when you read these blurbs posted my accepted and rejected students.

Attempting to make judgments based on these "sound-bites" from such a small portion of UCLA applicants is flawed. All of us understand that there are factors, including those mentioned in your previous post, but fall far from assessing the situation. We can only presume what was a factor that helped us in or rejected us. Calling the admissions office to find out why (which you could do) would solve the mystery.

Yes, UC's are notorious for "taking people with lower school" but so do private schools. The great Ivys and others accept students with lower scores over URMs, first gens, legacies, low-income, etc.

Anyone who thinks that my theory applies in all cases of acceptance to UCLA, are idiots. Of course there is the white girl or Asian with the 1500 who gets accepted. But in regards to the good number of minorities, thats the way it goes. Cant fight City Hall.

Firstly, City Hall has nothing to do with this. The Master Plan of Education and UC policies can be modified through amendments introduced in the Assembly or Senate.

Secondly, your theory can be found in the Comprehensive Review of each university; the universities make it quite clear that there are other factors contributing to acceptance. It's nothing new.

Havent you ever heard the expression "Cant fight City Hall?" What it means is you can't change something from the outside. In regards to UCLA, it isnt JUST scores, it isnt JUST essays, it isnt JUST grades. All of those things contribute. But when everyone has them, they admit based on their priorities. And two of their priorities is to admit in state people and to give some priority to struggling applicants.

42000 applicants!!! what was the acceptance rate?

Rejected :(

1410 SAT
800/760/700 SAT IIs
3.93 uw UC GPA
Good ECs, really good essays
multiple college classes (at UCSB and Berkeley)

I'm sad. I just don't know what went wrong.

Though with 42,000 or so applications, it really is a crapshoot.

im out too

1400sat
800/740/720 satII
4.3 UC gpa (3.7 u/w school gpa, no additional points for ap/h class level)
good ec's, intern at nasa goddard...
essays...personally i thought they were great but its almost impossible for such a judgement to be accurate ;)

being out of state and applying to engineering (aero) hurt me, maybe? :(

you cant make any judgements based on other peoples postings. 99% of the stats people list are fake anyways. if i was posting while i was still ed right after i looked at my rejection i could have said i was a 4.5///1590///800///800///800 student and f*k the system and the school but im more mature than that and i'll accept the fact that they didnt accept me because of my *real stats. these types of posts (rejected because i got a 1500 which was too high for some school wheter its ucr or ucla) on this forum are just jokes and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Calidan...you got rejected? How did that happen?

Georgetown has your back though :)

where are you basing this on... i know i don't lie about my stats at all, and what good is it if people do lie, i'd like to think they don't....

Decision: Accepted

Stats:

SAT: 1440

SAT IIs: 800/700/690

GPA: 4.2 UC

Rank: 29/361ish

Subjective:

Essays: I thought they were great and my teachers really liked them.

Hook (if any): I'm a pianist who've won state, national, and international competitions.

Location/Person:

State or Country: Cali

School Type: Public

Ethnicity: Korean

Gender: Female

why you think you were accepted: ELC, strong essays, strong musical background and other great EC's.

Haha thanks, eiffel. I really don't know what happened. I thought I had a pretty good chance. I just hate the seemingly random nature of UCLA's admissions.

Congrats to you, though! UCLA would be lucky to have you. :)

groovygrrlxoxo:

Did you get into UCLA?
Edit: I'm guessing you were rejected.

I got into UCLA, i'm really psyched. The only thing that is weird to me is how all these people with higher scores and GPA and more EC's got in while i didnt. how strange.

GPA: 4.13 UC / 3.76 UW
SAT I: 1360
SATII: W: 670 MIIC: 710 Spanish: 760
I don't have that many extracurriculars. I didn't really have many until junior and senior year. Also, i have ZERO community service, which i thought was going to screw me. I do have 5 AP classes senior year though and I think my essays were pretty good.
Hmm... how random

groovygrrl- I'm assuming you were rejected simply because your comments reek of bitterness.

You may feel your rejection was unjust, but it is not the fault of any other applicant. Please stop suggesting all those who do not meet your qualifications must have been given special preference for reasons that are not entirely innocent and equal; it's not attractive.

congrats to everyone who did get in! i wish all of you the best =).

no offense to anyone who didnt get in, im quite surprised about it too. however, to comment on groovygirl's comments, you make it sound like diversity is so bad. the fact is, diversity is more important than you think it is, it really really enhances the college experience. maybe ucla doesnt want to make itself into an elitist institution but rather try to assemble a microcosm of the real world. that's not so bad, is it?

Accepted out of state. I feel pretty good =)

congrats legendofmax
