legendofmax, are you more interested in UCLA or Uva?

Not sure, I haven't gotten into UVA officially yet.

im shocked i even got accepted since i'm didnt have the most stellar stats and im asian.

620 V and 670 W with a 650 in Chem is not necessarily the strongest stats esp. for a bio major.

but i think what really helped is i challenged myself and took advantage of all the aps in my class (6 total)

in for bioeng : )

I agree with Littleol'me: "...groovygrrl...rejected...comments reek of bitterness..."

lighten up! with so much competition to get into colleges, espec. UC schools and espec. UCLA, schools don't want people flunking out or not succeeding at their school. if kids got in, CONGRATULATE THEM! try to show a little class

Congratulations everyone who made it into UCLA (sorry this was so late :( I've been knee-deep in books studying for my finals which began a week early for me this quarter). I'll be looking forward to a new generation of Bruins!

To those who didn't make it, it's very tough to narrow down so wide of a pool of applicants, but you worked hard your four years of high school and you will undoubtably succeed wherever you end up if you keep the right work ethics and have the right mindset. This is just one road bump in your life, and you will encounter a countless amount of other bumps throughout life, but never lose track of your goals. The college institution you wind up attending is only as important as the effort you put in it to succeed. Look past all the hype that this board occasionally puts on and realize that in the end, the colleges don't make the students, the students make the college.

I'm so surprised and somewhat ashamed now because i took the spot of maybe more deserving student than I. I don't understand why it is so random but I guess UC does have to make sure that minorities have some chance (i.e. low income hispanics and blacks) no offense if any.. but yea, i mean there is a lot of confusion about this but if we look in their avg stats. their avg GPA is 4.09 and SAT scores are only 1333. That shows that half of the kids accepted/go there?? are below those stats. I'm sorry if you are hurt that u didnt get in with stellar stats but I'm sure you got into other schools that are even better.

see, im looking at steaky's stats, and its quite average for a ucla applicant and admit, nothing wrong there. so there must've been something that tipped him/her over. and perhaps there wasn't that something to tip over those people who were rejected.

Wat the hell is UCLA's admission thinking? A closed door policy that only admits Cal residents even though out of state applicants can be much more qualified.
They mut have water in their heads and eyes coverd by stickers. i truly doubt its repution as a diverse and metropolitan UNI.

mobstermobi- what is this closed door policy you speak of?

legendofmax - only the females? aw, let's not be so modest here... : )

mobster - perhaps ucla is competitive enough to be unable to accept all unqualifed applicants...don't take it personally. my out of stater asian classmate got in with numerical stats much lower than yours but really, truly top-notch ECs. You never knowwhat the admissions committee wants, but to put it down to a closed door policy and therefore a uni that is neither diverse nor metropolitan makes little sense.

Well, maybe u r right. Anyway, I am an Citizen aboard applying back so my ECs are already as much as I can achieve here.
Having received accreditions from international and national academic and art competitions and served as executive positions in uniformed groups and student welfare services, they all might just seem too little for UCLA....
We just can start a club in school like wat u guys have the liberty to do so.... and getting a executive post is already something that makes ur school days as busy as hell....
here, we wake up at 6am everyday and offed at abt 5 plus in the afternoon, then there are assignments, tutorials and my own commitment as a painter. Wow.... we get only like less than 5 hours of sleep....(imagine pandas roaming around in the campus....)

anyway lots of my friends can only be members of their ECs, does that make them less capable than those with top notch ECs? i dun think so. Chances are limited, mea, lots of ppl are deprived of chances by ppl who just like to grab the posts undiscriminately. Definitely, i believe ur friend did wonderful jobs, but if i take a look at myself or ppl who has tons of leadership posts from a different angle, dont you think they and I are the selfish ones? we got wat we wanted, but how abt others who are in fact qulaified but no as much......so wat do they put down for Uni applications?

i surely believe we dont live to only live for ourselves, we live for the ppl around us, so by doing something i like, (art) and something which i believe can resonate common feeling among us is therefore my commitement.

congrats to your friend and all the best for your application.

UC does shown preference for in-state students; it's reality and a matter of fact.

But why?

UC is supported by the taxpayers of California, not by the tax payers of Nevada, Utah, New York, Virginia, etc. Thus, since the public institution is supported by Californians, UC prefers in-state students. The same is applicabale to public schools in other states. A Californian student applying to UMich, Ann Arbor or Univ. of Virginia has a more difficult time since public money of those states funds that school.

I agree. We Californians could say the same about any other public insitution in another state. We could complain that it's harder for us to get into colleges like College of William & Mary and U Mich-Ann Arbor.

i think an issue why uc tends to get more flak than other state schools is that ucs are considered extremely elite...not necessarily HPYSM but very close [and close to or equal in terms of grad]. because of this, competition is higher, chances for out of state students are lower, and there are more frayed nerves.

:)

hey for all you guys that got accepted, you should feel really proud of youself, only ~21% got accepted. you guys did a great job in high school and deserve this reward. your hard work and alienation from your peers with a large workload has finally paid off. congratulations everyone.
