*** Official AP Biology Thread 2012-2013 ***

Thank you @WritingonStars and aldfig0, that was very helpful.

Can someone please estimate how many we would need to get right on the MC and approximately how well we would have to do on the FRQ section to get a 5? Freaking out because I got a 34/63 on the first Barron’s practice exam - didn’t even have time to do the 6 math questions. Planning to review all day tomorrow but I’m not sure if it’s pointless now…

apparently barrons estimated you would need about a 87+ on the MC to get a 5

^is that the old or the new Barron’s? Or am I just ignorant - in the new book there are only 63 questions…?

Well my bio teacher is a lame duck. So we’re basically on our own, not one practice test.

At least I read the entire Campbell 6th edition ( yes my school does not feel the need to update their books). So should I be fine or am I missing out on a lot from not taking one practice test?

@montague8 It seems like on past tests a ~65% was enough for a 5. The curve might be different this year but I don’t see it going above the in the low 70% for MC and FRQ combined for a 5. That would just be ridiculous.

@DrDavid our school uses 6th edition too :(

I think the new test has like 38 chapters and I read 20ish? We didn’t go over every single chapter so I’m just reading Pearson Prep book. Where is this released cb test?

i think they meant 87%

Wait so when they ask for essays, just write 2-3 sentences for short questions and a mini paragraph for each part for long responses? Is that what you guys are doing? I will probably try to write as much as I can. Sorry just trying to get an idea of what to do for Frqs for science aps.

that seems about right… idk if you should do this for bio but my APES teacher last year told me to put your best material for FRQ’s in the first sentences

You could look at past FRQs and the student answers to them for a feel of what and how much to write.

Are the FRQs “revised” also?

Quick question- do we need to know anything about fungi or protists or bacteria? Like the hierarchies and taxonomies or even just information about it? I can’t find it in some new reveiw books so i’m not sure.

Do we need to know about classifcation?

dont think we need to know about that

@cramster9000 they’re not that good and definitely don’t reflect the new test, it’s basically just memorization

yeah the new cliffs isnt that great, it still was heavily memorization but the grid-ins were okay

I’m on chapter 3 of Barron’s. tomorrow’s going to be a long day.

I don’t see the point in reviewing Barrons from beginning to end. It’s all about concepts, if you don’t understand concepts, then you’re out of luck, but if you understand the concepts, for example what the purpose of photosynthesis is as the general process that carbon dioxide is fixed into sugars that store ATP, then take tomorrow and do practice questions. Unlike other AP’s, there are no resources, so this is the first time you probably saw the practice test in full. I’m going to write out one or two of the essays and then go over all the MC in depth, because they’ll probably take from the MC. The Barrons tests in the back are still the old format. They say its the new format, but the questions are clearly different.
