***Official AP English Language and Composition Thread 2014-2015***

MC was a lot easier than my practice tests had been, Essays were fine except argumentative. In the past they have done interesting and very divisive things like gender roles and what do we get … polite language???

Anyway I was thinking low 3 coming in, now I would say high 3- low 4

Yeah I liked the analysis passage a lot actually it was a good one. Synthesis was a weird topic, though, and so was the argument. The argument one was actually kind of interesting but the way the prompt was worded was super confusing cuz it was unclear what they wanted an argument about.

I’m hoping for a 5, expecting a 4.

The MC seemed easier than expected, hopefully it was not full of trick questions…

For the argument were you supposed to pick one culture/community or multiple?

The polite speech prompt was odd. You had to choose a specific culture or community and explain the role/function of polite speech in that particular context. There wasn’t really much you could say except for personal experience or observation. The problem was that it had to be tied to and focused on a specific culture or community.

I picked 2 communities and 1 culture :/.

And does anyone know if they really care about numbering our pages?

@Martin18 I’m pretty sure you could just have talked about it in general, the community being your country, etc. I don’t think that was an important detail. It was just that you weren’t supposed to argue with the person but rather to talk about the role of such speech in human interactions.

I may have done the argument wrong then I did it in general with reference to things such as culture and school community but certainly not as a focus but my guess is that they won’t be too rough as the prompt was very unclear/ confusing

You know your essays are about to be rough when you’re just starting your argument essay and people are already putting their heads down to sleep. X_X I spent so much time on the synthesis/analysis essays that I only had ten minutes to finish… I feel sorry for the reader who’ll have to make sense out of my chicken scratch. I’m hoping for a five but anticipating a four.

So the MC was way easier than what I have been practicing. But I think I might’ve gotten around 75% on it, which isn’t terrible. I loved the essays! I finished with 30 minutes to spare. As for the argumentative essay, I somehow managed to incorporate Their Eyes Were Watching God and Pride and Prejudice. Lol. Don’t ask how I did it, but it made sense. As for the analysis essay, it was probably the easiest for me, as you only had to know how to pick out certain rhetorical devices and how it affected the argument as a whole. I didn’t really prepare, but I am expecting a 4 or 5. :)>- THANK THE GOOD LORD ABOVE

The Multiple Choice was pretty easy, one of the passages I had even read before in my AP Language class. The first passage was slightly challenging, especially the question pertaining to passive voice. The first two essays were a breeze. The synthesis essay had a wide foray of evidence that helped build my argument. The analytical essay I relayed heavily on how he used ethos, pathos, and logos. The argumentative essay, on the other hand, I really struggled with. I ended up talking about cowboys tipping their hats to women and sports players telling each other good luck. The persuasive essay was the only difficult part of the test for me, because I like to use history and current events which did not pertain to the prompt at all. Expecting a 4, hoping for a 5. Hope you all did well

What do you all think the curve for a 5 will be?

I’m thinking I got:
40-45 on MC
7-8 on synthesis
8-9 on rhetorical
6-7 on argument

We had to pick a culture? ugh, i didnt see that. OMG i thought it was just an argument essay asking us to express the value of polite speech? oh no.

I didn’t pick a culture or anything, but I mentioned it as a factor…It was a stupid prompt, so if you half-tried to make a good essay, they will give you a good score.

@RoadtotheIvies98 I don’t remember it explicitly asking for culture either, but maybe it was implicit?

Yeh hopefully they don’t want a specific culture. I’m very thankful that they didnt bring any old English pre 1800 writing to analyze on the MC. Thats why I think everyone thought it was easier than normal.

I did mention the United States as the culture… but I didn’t specifically emphasize it throughout the essay.

I used entirely observations on the last essay, how polite speech conveys respect, how it is used to address members of different status groups, and how it presents a favorable public persona.

I felt fairly confident about the MC going into the test (I can usually consistently score around a 50/55), but I thought today’s questions were actually pretty difficult, haha. I didn’t have time to review all my answers like I usually do and now I can’t stop second guessing all my answers… the wait until July is going to kill me. X_X
