***official ap statistics 2013-14 thread***

I was waiting for someone to start this. Just wondering who else will be taking ap stat next year. Anyone who has taken this course before, please give your advice and/or opinions!

I just completed AP Stat this year. One thing you should take from this course is to appreciate the beauty of numbers and data. With the fruits of countless trials and fascinating theorems, one can predict with discerning accuracy a parameter for a population out of a statistic for a sample.

With that being said, one thing I would advise to you as a rising AP Stat student is to not memorize every single formula. There are of course some, like calculating expected values and conditional probabilities, that you should just learn. However, there are others that simply are too overwhelming to remember. For these, use the calculator and understand the general components of the formula.

Good luck next year, and have fun!

Thank you for your kind input limsanity! Anyone who will be taking or has completed the ap stat course please contribute!

How hard do you think it would be to self-study this course? I have a rather strong background in math but I’ve heard that the test was more concept based than mechanical plug and chug. Any comments/suggestions would help greatly

The concepts aren’t difficult and there aren’t that many of them - I found the exam to be very plug-and-chuggish, with the questions on experimental design being the only ones without some calculation. I essentially self-studied because my teacher was useless and anticipate a 5 handily. I think you should be fine. Good luck!

It’s a lot more writing than math but I think it is fairly easy. The concepts aren’t too complex and there are also calculator shortcuts that come in handy. This year’s exam was easier than usual…no idea why. The only thing that can get confusing are the different types of hypothesis tests amd knowing exactly how to word your explanations.

Also difficult about AP Stat is learning the assumptions/conditions for each inference test. At first, they were kinda hard to memorize, but I gradually understood why they had to be stated, so they became reasonable.

AP Statistics is one of the more boring math classes that is more running your calculator and plug in the formula / obvious graph reading to your death. As well as doing the same darn real life examples that you could care less that you computed the answer to–at you sort of know how if you punched it into a computer the answer will turn out.

Definitely not as beautiful / as fun as Calculus, the way it is taught as an AP course.

In my opinion, it takes more time to learn than Calculus and there is much more memorization, yet the problems are a ton simpler and less thinking given you basically memorized the formulas, conditions, and definitions… Which I rather cared less about :stuck_out_tongue: But if you do care, it’s easier than Calculus, for most that do not like Calc ha :P

so, uh, it’s been awhile since anyone’s posted here…for people who are in ap stats right now, how far are you guys? my teacher has just finished going over binomial and geometric models which is around unit 4 in our text book…so far stats seems rather boring and drawn out

My class just finished sampling distributions and we started confidence intervals last class.

I find the class boring, but I’m fairly sure it’s because of my teacher’s style, not the material. She literally gives us “scripts” to use on our homework/tests for interpreting the problems. Our last set of guided notes says “If asked to interpret the confidence interval, say 'we are c% confident that the interval from __ to __ captures the actual value of the (parameter).” Gets pretty boring when all you do is mindlessly fill in the blank! If you deviate from the script on the test, you lose points, even if your wording is also correct.

I basically slept my way to a 5 on that test. The class was also pretty boring to me.

luckyyyyy :0 i sleep a lot in class(too boring can’t help it) but then i have to teach myself everything at home…and then i forget everything a week later Dx im kinda nervous for the ap exam actually

Hey, y’all! I’m taking Stats online, so I assume the experience is a bit different.
Personally, I just finished up confidence intervals for z, and I’m moving on to t distributions. I find it quite fun, actually, but that’s just me.

what book do you guys use in your class, and to prep for the test?

We use a blue and white textbook with a bunch goldfish on the cover(yes its a highly intellectual and ap level description I know)

I bought the Barron’s ap stats prep book but have yet to open it…kinda wish I bought the pr one instead cuz it’s lighter with bigger print

haha mangoking! is it a good book? If it is, can you give me the author’s name?

@DiaphanousDoll (nice name btw) do you have a online textbook?

@shmluza hmmm I think it’s a decent book, the explanations are helpful and there re lots of practice problems(the answers to all of which can be found online) I think it’s by bock and some other people…we use the old third editoon(school too poor orz) and they are out with the sixth or fifth already

What equations and tables are provided during the AP Statistics exam?

What do you guys think are the most important formulas you need to know, other than the ones already in the formula sheet?
