Official AP US History Thread 2012

@Oscarlany that’s how I feel… I don’t know what to think about the MC…

How bad is not having a thesis on the DBQ?? I figured we were just supposed to analyze, and they’d just grade it based on keywords and events, like they do the ap bio test, so I just dove right into the information. I used 9 of the documents in the DBQ and had extra information. The free-responses went decently too, minus the thesis. Really worried right now! Anyone else do this?

^Thesis is important, it’s what’s supposed to unify your entire paper. But what’s done is done, and if you had a good essay you can still scrape an okay score. Sorry that I have to tell you  but it’s your teacher’s fault for not teaching you.

My Regards:

MC: Very fair, similar in difficulty to the practice tests we took (I was 2003 and one other official CB test) but I thought it was a little recent history heavy. No crazy stuff like art movements or anything, yay!
DBQ: I was pretty happy with it, used all but one document and a bunch of outside information. I didn’t plan so well so the organization was sort of off kilter…we’ll see how that goes.
FRQ (#3): This was easy…but I feel like I messed it up somehow. My sequence was off time wise but I think I had some pretty good details. Not bad.
FRQ (#4): One paragraph was really good, the other BS and facts mixed. I kinda liked this one.

Overall, I was pleased. If the curving is like it was in previous years, I’m a happy camper :)

Will I get any points if my last free response–compare and contrast–only contrasts. Totally mismanaged my time. Totally bummed

Guys, I only used 3 documents on the DBQ… am I screwed? In class, we never once practiced DBQs and our teacher never told us how many documents to use… So I just assumed it was like a AP lang synthesis essay, where you have to use 3 documents. Besides the lack of documents used, I wrote a good essay with a lot of outside info. Can I still get a decent score?

Thoughts:
MC: Really easy! There’s no way I could have gotten more than twelve wrong absolute max. Though I agree with the above posters - the questions were weird and selection seemed uneven.
DBQ: Kind of upset about this one because I could have included so much more stuff if I had organized my paper better. When I saw that I had a weak argument, I just tried to cram in as much fact as possible. Still, I got all but one document in so it was okay. Probably a 7.
FRQ 2: Started off very strong, until I realized near the end that I had left out some very important information. Oops. The last body paragraph I don’t even… Probably 7.
FRQ 4: Really happy with this one! I was really able to tie the two topics together into a cohesive argument so I’m aiming for the top (8 or 9).

I’m glad with the preparation I did. Definitely questions I felt like I had seen before, just different phrasing. Same with the FRQ/DBQ.

I’d be disappointed if I didn’t get a five, and I do tend to assess myself harshly. Still, it worries me because if the test is considered “easy”, especially with the less harsh scoring system (no deductions for wrong answers), the curve might not be as generous as I’m expecting it to be.

^^If you used a lot of outside information and had a cohesive document, I think you’ll still do alright. If you go onto AP Central’s released FRQ page and look at the example for the stellar essay for DBQ 2006, you’ll see that the person did not reference any of the documents directly, rather having weaved the information in her piece (or so the graders say). ([AP Central - The AP United States History Exam](<a href=“Supporting Students from Day One to Exam Day – AP Central | College Board”>AP United States History Exam – AP Central | College Board)) But her “referencing” is so subtle/brief/general that if I read her essay without knowing there were documents, I wouldn’t be able to correlate it to any of the documents given (maybe one). However, her essay was extremely good otherwise and obviously earned her a top score.

Essentially, what I’m saying is that if you followed the prompt, and used three examples explicitly, there’s a chance you “used” the others as well by providing some of the information in them, counting it as outside information. Since the documents group together, it’s very likely. They might still credit you.

Even if they don’t, I wouldn’t get to stressed over it. What’s done’s done. If you do reasonably well on the rest of the exam, it’s still likely you’ll get a five.

^the highest you could get is a four so yea you are in a tough situation unfortunately. However you could still easily pass and get a four if you did well on the other essays multiple choice

Do you guys know if this website is accurate?

[AP Pass - AP Us Calculator](AP U.S. History Test Score Calculator - AP Pass)

you don’t have to actually use the words Document A, Document B…etc

because i used the author of the documents name to reference the document. That counts right?

I enjoyed the test. I felt I was prepared. Hoping for a 5!

Remember we cannot discuss questions

Yeah that’s fine.

A big thanks to the teachers who predicted Guilded Age.

hey guys so i though the MC was bearable, but i was only 100% sure about like half of them so i’m hoping i got at least 40 MC right :frowning:
as for the FRQ, i feel like i did good on the DBQ and FRQs but i kind of bs’d my last one and wasn’t sure if my info was totally accurate…

does anyone know how the writing is graded? do they spend a lot of time going over them or are they pretty lenient on the grading?

I feel really good about the test. I maybe missed about 15 MC. I took a practice test the night before and only missed 12, but during the test I was definitely not sure about a few and had to result to guessing. The essays were easy, I think the predictions everyone made were pretty accurate to what was on the test, so I did all of my extra studying around the questions that were on the test. I did a 5 page DBQ, one 4 page FRQ, and another 3 ½ page FRQ.

Are you able to get good scores (6+) on the essays/DBQ if you’re not the best writer, but overload the essay with outside information? I struggle with quickly getting a solid thesis down, so I usually end up with a sloppy thesis that addresses the question, but isn’t the best. To make up for it, though, I included at least 15 pieces of outside information on the DBQ, maybe a little less on the FRQs.

i want to say i did fairly well. last year in world history, i totally blanked out on i think 2 of the essay prompts and bs’ed it and got a 4. but this year, i recalled enough facts to write my essays so who knows. i might actually be able to pull a 5 this year :)

Is the 4 prediction in response to only using 3 of the docs on the DBQ. What about not comparing in the last free response. Had thesis and decent contrast…Totally mismanaged my time and did not get to the compare. ugh

i accidentally skipped over “compare and contrast” so i analyzed -___- i happened to mention that the difference and the similarity, so would that be okay?

4 maybe a 5.

Our teacher tells us that you can’t get higher than a four if you don’t completely answer the question
