[] Summer Activities: 1 month stay with host family in Spain summer before junior year
[] Essays: My common app essay was excellent, probably the best thing I’ve ever written in my life (I’ve gotten great feedback on it.) My supplement essay was good but not as great as the common app one (I focused more on other schools’ essays and didn’t focus on BU’s as much.)

[] Counselor Rec: My counselor loves me! So probably really good as well.
[] Additional Rec: From my dance instructor, like a second mother to me so probably excellent as well.

[] State (if domestic applicant): MI
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Private catholic school, rigorous curriculum
[] Ethnicity: White/middle eastern
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: ~$200,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none, really. Although I really emphasized how interested I was in BU in my essays.
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Extracurriculars, common app essay, rigor of curriculum
[] Weaknesses: supplement essay, and I had a bad semester Junior year (ended up with a 3.4) and dropped AP bio. However, I was taking honors math, AP bio and APUSH at the time, so they probably looked past it.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My stats are slightly above their average, and my extracurriculars and common app essay probably overshadowed any shortcomings in my application. Also I hear they don’t get as many applicants from the Midwest so maybe that helped me a bit.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: MSU, U of M
Rejected: UPenn, Northwestern, UChicago (was deferred early action then rejected.)
[/ul]General Comments:
I also received the $10,000 Dean’s merit scholarship, renewable all 4 years. Not quite sure what was so special about my application, but I’ll take it!

Decision: Rejected

Mostly just read and watched college lectures for the heck of it.
[] Essays:
I thought they were good. I had teachers and friends read them and received praise.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One from my physics teacher which was very positive, and a solid recommendation from my sophomore year English teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: My counselor claimed that it was the first and longest rec she wrote.
[] Additional Rec:
[li] Interview:
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): Massachusetts
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: urban public
[] Ethnicity: white
[] Gender: male
[] Income Bracket: <30,000 a year.
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: ummmm, essays? SATs are ok? I expressed a genuine passion for learning?
[] Weaknesses: GPA is respectable, but nothing too fancy.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Looking at the above stats, I have no idea why I was rejected. I had an awful slump junior year, but I pulled myself out of it (it explains why I only barely passed the AP exams I’ve taken so far and why my rank isn’t higher). I worked hard on my BU app, and I thought BU was a realistic match. It was one of my top choices.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:

[/ul]General Comments:
Only response I’m waiting for is for Cornell. I need a miracle at this point. :’( Any got any thoughts about why I might have been rejected? It could have been just the sheer number of people from my high school who applied. What of my income? I’m not exactly the richest applicant.

D: Based on the stats and ECs, I completely agree that BU was a good match for you, and I’m shocked that you weren’t accepted or, at the very, very least, waitlisted. I would doubt it was because of the number of students who applied from your school - 193 applied to BU from my school last year, and probably more this year, and I’ve never heard of a case of inter-school competition in that regard (though I very well could be wrong).

The monetary reason is the best I can think of as well, but that seems really uncool on their part. BU says they’re need-blind, so that would seem contradictory though. Is it possible they didn’t receive your mid year grades, or something along those lines? Maybe it was the lack of chemistry SAT IIs and APs (though even that seems odd in light of all of the hardcore chemistry classes taken during your senior year, and the biochemistry course at Harvard during the summer)

All-in-all, I’m really surprised, and I seriously can’t think of any reason for it. I’m really sorry dude =/

Good luck with Cornell though! I really hope you get in! <|[={D>–/—<

Getting rejected from BU just made me feel embarrassed for applying to UChicago (rejected from there as well) and Cornell. I was also waitlisted at RPI and Case Western. Funny, I applied as a PHYSICS major at RPI, while physics had been my worst science (I was able to self study my way into a better understanding of the subject through the summer and into my senior year though. I currently love physics and would change into a physics major in a heartbeat). It was my mistake, I was going through a physics loving phase when I applied to RPI and I only realized my mistake in putting physics after I applied to RPI. My general theme when applying to colleges is that yeah, I made mistakes in the middle of high school when it mattered the most, but it has led me to discovering a passion for math and science which has translated into a very successful senior year so far. By the end of the year, I may have an article in the American Journal of Physics.

Hopefully CWRU or RPI will let me in, but I’ll be left with Umass Amherst if they don’t give me enough financial aid. I’ll try to transfer if I have to (I’m leaning towards smaller LAC’s). I’m frankly turned off by Umass Amherst’s party culture and by the riots the ensued after the Patriots lost the Super Bowl. It’s still a big school though, and hopefully I’ll find a niche.

Maybe I had the awful luck of having my BU app reviewed right after the super bowl :P. Unlike many rejected applicants, I can’t admit to having a bad essay, or treating BU as a safety. I even put down that I want to be considered for the BU college of general studies and I applied for the honors college (I figured, if anything, that shows commitment). Alas, BU only offered me a complete rejection.

Overall, from the experience of my peers, it seems like most very respectable private schools have turned into crapshoots, not just the Ivies.

As a clarification, Chemistry I is the designation for 1st semester, while chemistry II is the designation for second semester. In my honors college essay, I wrote about how much I loved taking that course. Chemistry, physics, it’s all the same to me. I love both equally!

I also checked my application status several times before. I never got any indication that they were missing materials from me.

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): legacy (dad holds BS, MS and MD from BU and my older brother is a freshman there now)
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Definitely my essays - my main Common App essay in particular really showcased my personality. Being a legacy probably helps plus I know I got good recommendations from my teachers. Also my school is all AP and honors courses and we do not weight grades at all (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) so my transcript does look pretty good.
[] Weaknesses: I wish my GPA had been a bit higher and maybe had been a bit more consistent with my ECs or had done something extra in the summer or something.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Overall good application, legacy student, good essays etc.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at University of Pittsburgh, waitlisted at Washington University in St Louis, waiting on Penn and Brown

[/ul]General Comments:
Really surprised by the aid I got - I’m apparently a Presidential Scholar ($20,000 a year) even though I missed the priority deadline by about two weeks. In addition I got another $20,000 or so in university grants plus the federal loans and work study - will only need about $8,000 in private loans which is pretty amazing. Super excited to have such a great offer so I feel terrible that I’m not totally convinced I want to go to BU - will have to seriously think about it over the next week or two. But it is a great school and I love Boston and so I know I could be really happy there. Congratulations to everyone else!

[ *] SAT I (breakdown): 1830: CR 620 W 620 M 590–>my math used to be 470 but because i was rejected from a school because of it, i studied really hard for a month and got it up 90 points and was accepted to the school i was rejected from. i also sent my new score to other schools i applied to, so i think maybe BU was really impressed with the big jump in my math SAT score that i was able to pull off in 28 days of studying
[ *] ACT: 26 -->resent scores after retaking and had 5 point jump in all sections. scores is still on low side, but i think maybe BU was impressed that i could make all my scores increase

[ *] Teacher Recommendation: really good from my latin teacher who also wrote a recommendation letter to the classics department, good letter from my math teacher because i went from a C+ first term to an A the second term and talked about my work ethic

[ /list]**Reflection[ /b][list]
[ *] Strengths: i think my stats show im a well rounded person
[ *] Weaknesses: standardized test scores
[ *] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i think i was accepted for a couple reasons. i think they noticed the big jumps in my SAT and ACT scores which went from horrendous to mediocre, but were nevertheless big jumps considering i had 28 days to study and retake the test by the last december date before it was too late. bu i think also really values diversity, and i think i really encompass that. i think not only by my race, but because of my essay which talked about how ive had to meet a lot of people and embrace a lot of different situations and living styles because i had to live with different people growing up sometimes because i live with a single parent who travels frequently. i think BU is a school that really cares more about the student as a PERSON and about what they do outside of school, proof of hardwork, and that they embrace diversity. i feel lucky that i was accepted with such bad scores. some may think that i dont deserve to be accepted because of them because so many people were rejected with better scores, but i know that im an extremely hard worker and have really killed myself in school to get this far and i think that the admission committee recognized that, and that there are more important things than test scores.
