CollegiateDreams schools do what works for them, I don’t agree with everything they do and am not privvy to it either. I do know however, that Cal Poly attracts applicants who are qualified for ivies and UCs and actually rates higher than many UC’s, so they have a much lower acceptance rate. Each college is told or figures out how many students they can accept. Based on applicant’s acceptance score they are able to figure everyone above 4143 (for example) can be sent an acceptance. Then of course they have other decisions on athletes, non traditional students whose score can’t be figured out, out of state, disadvantaged etc. This all takes time. I suppose they could wait until the 1st of April to notify the students as many schools do, or they can choose to offer admittance as soon as they can. Which is better is only important to the people who get or don’t get their notice. Due to the system being a number system, they can choose the next 10 or 1 easily. Soon there will be a waiting list. Last year almost no one got admitted off the wait list, the year before a huge number.

I probably should have used the term complicated admission process as I was responding to the not understanding how it worked not about how they send out their acceptances. It is unnerving to get rejected when you have better stats than someone else and there are some reasons why. Also I was told a large percent of applications have errors on them, if you truly have exceptionally high stats compared to others who got in you also have to look at exact major, there are some that accept as few as 10 students a year. My son’s year they accepted 42 students into his major and that was a lot more than many. If you are still concerned contact admissions and make an appointment to go over your application to see if there was a mistake.

With regard to objective vs. subjective admissions, I think that taking away the ability to be trained for interviews, to wow admission officers with all your clubs and services you did many times in name only, and to be admitted based on essays you may or may not have written and/or experiences you may have been able to afford while most cannot, is superior, but that along with most of this is my OPINION, your OPINION may differ from mine, but it doesn’t make you right and me wrong.

I am sorry to disagree with you regarding the new lab however, I was with the Dean yesterday for the College of Science and Math and he named off equipment they have in their lab that is not in Berkeley’s. His son did post doctorate work at Berkeley. Please take up your doubts with him. Cal Poly is a Master’s Degree University just as is Harvey Mudd, certainly you don’t doubt that Harvey Mudd is a nationally and internationally ranked university as is Cal Poly. It is not simpy a regional school and in fact many of their undergraduate research is presented against the PhD schools and it wins. In many competitions Cal Poly wins against the PhD schools. For students who want to go on for a PhD many choose to go to a Master’s college in order to get research experience, something nearly impossible for an undergraduate in a PhD university, plus they get to learn and work with professors whose main job is to teach not to finish research and mentor their PhD students.

@czs1994: Cal Poly really is a great school, especially for engineering students. I applied to many top schools (privates and UCs), but Cal Poly is still one of my top choices due to many factors. I know plenty of other qualified students who have done the same, and many are also strongly considering Cal Poly as well. I guess in the end, I am happy that they start sending out acceptances now instead of waiting, I just wish they communicated the release process more effectively to applicants. I don’t have much opinion on objective vs. subjective admissions and see pros and cons to both approaches. My comment on this was to point out that I think it should be easier/quicker for Cal Poly to come up with an admissions decision than a schools that utilizes a holistic approach, but I don’t know the details here.

Cal Poly undergraduate research may win against undergraduate research at some PhD-granting universities, but I wage to bet that the PhD student research at Berkeley/UCLA trumps the Cal Poly undergraduate research and master’s student research in general, for obvious reasons. My point is that it seems doubtful to may that such schools with a great degree of research prowess have only comparable or even sub-par lab facilities to a school like Cal Poly. Sure, undergraduates may not have access to all of these labs, it may be easier for Cal Poly students to conduct meaningful research at the undergraduate level, Cal Poly may be better at providing research opportunities for undergrads, etc. The professors whose main job is to teach not to finish research and mentor their PhD students are often the ones producing the most impactful research. Again, this may not matter to an undergrad, but I am pointing out why I doubt Cal Poly’s facilities would be equal to or better than these schools. Not to mention the astronomically greater funding for research at Berkeley/UCLA, greater emphasis on high-level academic research, etc. Harvey Mudd is recognized nationally and internationally at the undergraduate level like Cal Poly, but also like Cal Poly is does not have nearly the same level of research output as Berkeley/UCLA. Cal Poly simply has a different focus and goal than these UC schools. That is all I am saying.

I have to agree with Collegiate Dreams, anyway you slice it there is really no excuse for dragging this process out. UC Davis received 75,000 applicants this year and will release all it’s decisions in one day. UC Berkley received over 80000 and will also manage to release it’s admits in one 24 hour period. For a Tech school, seems to me they could use a little technical assistance. Cal Poly is an excellent school and anyone one who attends is a lucky duck. But it is a Poly Tech. It has amazing advantages and some disadvantages as well. It certainly isn’t Harvey Mudd nor is it Cal or Davis either. It’s a great college in a great location but this state is blessed with many of those. In the craziness that is college admissions, perspective can be hard to come by.

Sorry for breaking up the argument here, but has anyone ever done the fabled surfboard shaping class or taken surf lessons at Cal Poly? I’d really like to learn to surf since I’m pretty landlocked out in the Midwest.

Good luck to you GeologyRocks! :)

Nope - never talked to anyone about surfing class. However I went to college in the midwest and took SCUBA and ground school for my pilots license as PE classes, so I wouldn’t be surprised with a PE class in surfing.

COME ON ENGINEERING!!! GET HERE ALREADY!!!

@CDSMOM please message me when you hear back from Poly. Even though I do not know you personally, I am routing for you and your daughter. I am praying for you and I know it will all work out according to God’s plan.

@calpolyslo14,@CDSMOM and @joyful1 - I was praying for joyful and CDSMOM the other night! I will add you and your daughter calpolyslo14 I have enjoyed watching you all on this thread! Phil 4:6-7 :)

You all have been so supportive! The routing and praying and cheering each other on has been such a blessing. I know that I couldn’t have remained sane without it! Thankfully my girl has NOT given up hope and is staying super positive…and continues to wear that darn SLO sweatshirt every night!

Accepted the 19th to Animal Science.

We could all make it like finals week when I was a student and not shower or shave until it’s over … that’s one superstition that I don’t miss!

Ha ha @TenFromLA, I’m afraid to ask my daughter if she’s washed the sweatshirt lately. I’m thinking the answer would be no!

@GeologyRocks
Ha! Your post about surfing and surfboard construction made me laugh. D saw a couple of years ago the surfboard construction room in the student union building and that absolutely sealed the deal for her! She was already head-over-heels in love with CP and all that it had to offer as an exceptional college, but it was the opportunity to build her own surfboard and live in a place to use it that she was most excited about! We’re in a landlocked state too.

@GeologyRocks and the bike repair shop located in the same area is great also, as well as the arts & crafting section a fun plus !

Has any art/design applicants heard back after submitting the portfolio or know anything regarding that?

WOOOHOOO Aerospace Engineer here! Just got accepted!

Congrats Treyinator, this is a good sign, looks like Engineering acceptances have begun…:)

Stats?
