****official cal poly slo class of 2018 decisions****

Got rejected for Mechanical Engineering
GPA UW: 3.8
GPA Weighted: 4.2

E.C.: 6-7/10

Don’t really know if this is usual for Cal Poly but I was very surprised about not getting in. What are the chances I still get into other, better UCs?

@BitterReject I’d say you still have a really good chance at other UCs so don’t worry too much (:

@bitterreject - did you check your UCD status? They have updated their portals today. Or did you not apply there? Four years ago, my son applied ME and was rejected at CP and UCSD, but in at UCI, UCSB, and UCD (off the waitlist) as well as several safeties. The UCs have room for many more students than CP. Good luck to you.

@BitterReject, the thing that most don’t know, particularly when they look at Cal Poly’s overall acceptance rate, is that each major has it’s own individual acceptance rate. CP projected an acceptance rate of about 17% for ME this year. That’s similar to Cornell. No one would consider Cornell a safety. So, long story short, it might be easier to get into the other schools on your list than it was for Poly. Keep your fingers crossed. Your stats certainly look impressive. Good luck!

Accepted to Sociology!

4 AP’s - APUSH, APES, Studio Art, Psych
2 community college courses
EC’s - 400+ service hours, JV tennis, Varsity cross-country and track, 1 year in student government, part time tutor

@jbourne looks like I’m in the same boat as your son because I’m in at UCSB and waitlisted at Davis.

Last year Davis placed roughly 6600 applicants on the wait list. Of those, about 2000 replied that they wanted to stay on the wait list. Of those 1000 or so were rewarded with acceptances. Good luck. You’ll do well where ever you go.

@tomwantssnow I think it is highly possible you could change majors with your numbers, sorry but all your recommendations and extra curriculars don’t matter, but your stats are superior. I am assuming you are waiting for ivys and privates to make your decision. Personally I would compare the programs of Berkeley for sure which will give you a fraction of the classes at CP, not sure about UCLA which is still on quarters. I believe CP’s aerospace program is ranked 1st for undergrads but if that is no longer your interest then of course change. If you do decide to change work on classes that are required for both majors so you don’t lose any time and apply at the earliest time. If you haven’t visited, I strongly suggest that you do, and if you can go while classes are in session and see if you can meet with the chairs of the department, was easy for my son in Math, and meet with some students in the major. Congratulations on your hard work, and I hope your mom is doing well, so sorry, it must be very hard for you and your family.

…

Got accepted last month for Business Admin!
Plan on attending this fall!

I still see tours going through campus on a regular basis, so I’m assuming lots of people haven’t decided on schools until they see it for themselves. Good call folks :)

tomwantssnow - my son is a freshman in EE. He thought he wanted to switch to ME too so while visiting at orientation we checked into it. You have to have one quarter in your original major. You should contact the dean of the ME to let him know you want to switch and provided you have good grades from your 1st quarter you should be able to switch. My son decided to stay with EE and is loving it. Also, last year we went to the open house after my son was accepted for EE (he accepted immediately). There were about 25 students in his group who had all been admited. The tour leader asked for a show of hands of who had decided for sure to attend SLO. My son was the only one (at the beginning of the tour). So all wait-listers hang in there, you never know!
