Official Carnegie Mellon Class of 2020 Applicants Discussion Thread

@ScaredAsian I think if it doesn’t say you are put into RD pool, you are rejected

@ScaredAsian In the online letter itself you are told that you’ve been deferred.

In my online letter, they mentioned Mid-Year Report. In some private schools in India, the mid-year exams are the pre-boards which take place in December, there isn’t any testing in August/September/October. (So, my pre-boards are going on right now and I’d be submitting my mid-year report by the end of December). Can that be the reason that I was deferred?

Can someone please tell me how to access my online letter? I can’t figure out where it is and I’m dying because I want to know so badly. Thanks!

@jmonster It should be under the red text that says “Admission and Financial Aid Notification”. There’s a button that says “Admission decision letter”, and clicking on that leads to it. It’s on the right side, but should be noticeable right when you log in.

@clairee Thanks for responding - there is no “Admission decision letter” link anywhere on the page! I got the confirmation that they received my application, and I also got the reminder to check Saturday at midnight. I’m thinking they must’ve screwed up with my application. Anyone have any thoughts??

@jmonster I’m facing the same issue as you!! sent CMU an email as well as a facebook message. If they dont reply soon i might just call them tomorrow!! This however is really strange

@jmonster dude, the same thing happened to me. That’s why i was so confused. I hope this doesn’t mean we are outright just rejected so bad that they don’t even want to give us a letter.

@ScaredAsian Nah i don’t think so … Even if they do reject us they have to send a letter irrespective… Might just be an error

@cmuplease @ScaredAsian Relieved to hear I’m not the only one! They have to notify us either way, so I doubt this means we got rejected. I emailed them too and I’m calling them first thing tomorrow.

@jmonster please post what they say on call here asap. I’m from India so timing of the calls will be a bit later
… Thanks

@cmuplease You bet, fingers crossed

Why does CMU appear to discourage reapplying in the RD, if rejected in the ED? The letter states

" Due to the highly selective nature of all of our programs, gaining admission to a second or third choice program
under Regular Decision is unlikely. However, if you have interest in making a formal request for consideration
under Regular Decision, please call us to discuss your intentions or email undergraduateadmissions@andrew.cmu.edu
with the subject line “Regular Decision Consideration.”
Does this imply that its a waste of time/effort to apply RD again? How do they even know what the second/third choice is? Super confused.

Hmmmm - CMU - If an applicant to engineering school gets in with much lower scores/grades than someone rejected to CFA it seems interview is weighted too much especially since how can you determine personality from one interview? Someone can interview great and easily be a nightmare mess to work with for four years - good luck with that!!

Hi! I don’t know if I should be posting here since I’ll apply RD, but if I go for an interview should I do so with an alumnus from Dietrich or Tepper? The reason I ask is because my intended major is econ, which is a joint program between the two schools.
And, is the interview even that important? They “strongly recommend” it but the closest alumnus from either Dietrich or Tepper is1.5-2 hours away, and the rest are 6-7 hours away, one way. Thanks!

@dr0wning Honestly, I don’t think interviews are that important. I think interview would help if you do it well, obviously, but you could get in without the interview like I did. But judging from your circumstances, I think doing the interview would be alright because it only takes you 1.5-2 hours. If I were you, I would do the interview with the alumni living the closest from your region. (Who you get as the interviewee is pure luck - I think - so school won’t really matter…?) I hope that helps.

@sdlee6050 I thought that you could get alumni contact info after submitting the application? Of course I’d like to choose the interviewer closest to me but it would literally take me less time to go to my neighboring state than to go where the other alumni are located.
So can I choose my interviewer? Since you said that who I get is pure luck…
Thank you!

@cmuplease @ScaredAsian UPDATE: I wasn’t notified because I had inquired about food allergy accomodations and apparently they thought I was pulling my application. Turns out I was accepted!! If you call admissions they’ll tell you your decision and send the letter at midnight tonight.

@matx1997 nope I was accepted into Tepper too!
