Official Carnegie Mellon Class of 2020 Applicants Discussion Thread

@design2020 so because I didn’t apply for financial aid does it show them that I don’t need the money aid? Or should I still apply to show them I don’t need it? It makes sense that I don’t right (to tell them the option of them aiding me is something I don’t need to begin with)

@terr24lr I would think so. Applying might make it seem like you were hoping to get aid without knowing whether or not you would qualify. Not applying because you know you won’t get any makes sense

@design2020 @crimsonwarrior okay perfect- thanks guys for your time and helping me clear that!

@terr24lr no problem! I’m on the waitlist as well so let’s hope for the best

One of my FA documents hasn’t been received and I just want to know how much money they’re giving me!

@dr0wning I know that feel. CMU’s’ office is quite nice though and you could ask them about it. Your document may have already been received and just not marked as so on your portal (as I found out was my case today).

@Calciferous How does that work? Do you just call the FA office, tell them your name, ask if the documents have all been received, then ask what the FA award is?

@dr0wning I called admissions before decisions came out because I had submitted documents but they still did not say received. They were very kind and asked for my name and told me they were all there. You may be able to ask for your award, but if it’s not in your portal it probably isn’t ready yet.

@NICE8x Thanks! I just realized that they’re closed for the day, so I’ll just wait.

@dr0wning The office of undergrad at CMU has the nicest people! I actually called a couple hours ago and told the lady that my parent’s tax return transcript hadn’t been documented on WhereAmI even though it’s been 2 weeks. She logged on to IDOC, asked for my name, searched for the transcript, and boom it was done and over with. Took 4 minutes tops. I don’t think you can ask for your FA award if they don’t have the letter prepared yet, however.

Did anyone use the online financial aid net price calculator? Was it accurate at all?

@NICE8x Accepted MCS '20 :slight_smile:

@thereal6god SO HAPPY FOR YOU CONGRATS!!!

so basically there’s no point to even stay on the waitlist… cool

Congratulations @thereal6god ! Wonderful news!
So did they take you off the list almost immediately or was the wait listing an involuntary mistake on their system?

The interesting thing about CMU is that their financial aid is not completely need-based. They do give different amounts depending on how much they want you and the strength of your application.

(this isn’t even regarding actual merit scholarships like the presidential scholarships)

omg cmu gave me almost 50k in grants per year im dying 8-|

@stressedgirl7 Do you have a very low EFC? You are so lucky!

@NICE8x actually my family is considered upper middle class (100-120k/yr) so I’m so so so so surprised!!!

@stressedgirl @Riviera2016 @KnightElf @Calciferous @MandomeLife does anyone know how the process works for asking for more money? I have an appointment with the financial aid office, do I show them my offers for others schools or just straight up beg or . . . ?
