Official Class of 2013 ED Decision Thread

But I think it was widely accepted that it did give you a bump - born out by the statistics released by admissions today - why else would they single them out?

[/quote]

the statistics released by Dartmouth were as follows:

401 sudents admitted ED

Students of color comprise 29 percent of the admitted group. You do understand that when they say students of color they mean all non-white students including Asians (while not underrepresented they are still counted as minorities)? The student of color category are simply not URMs). so we are talking about ~ 116 students. Unless you know how these numbers break out, you are speculating a lot (URMs are going to still be underrepresented no matter which cycle they apply in).

21 are international students.

So what is there to say about the 264 other non-minority students who knocked your kid out of the box?

BTW,
As the parent of a URM child (who had more than 150 points higher than your son on the SAT and a higher GPA when admitted to Dartmouth, so it is safe to say that she got in on her own work) whether or not you were trying your hand at sarcasm, your comment was inappropriate on so many levels and I for one was defintiely not amused!

modadunn, I guess it's some form of therapy for you to hang out here ragging on admits, internationals and the college's pres.

Sherlock.. At this point in time I do not find fault with the URM bump. It is clear that we have a long way to go in this country to not only offer the same opportunity but affect generational and systemic racism to the point where some kind of AA isn't necessary. But here's a question for you. Should that same bump be granted to the son/daughter of Cliff & Claire Huxtable (Dr and Lawyer) over the truly disadvantaged student who has risen from the ashes in a single parent home so to speak? Or put more recently.. Should Obama's children be equally entitled to that bump?

I am not saying they should or they shouldn't.. it's just something more to consider of all the other hundred things to consider, especially when it comes to college and jobs.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm really excited about going to D and meeting all of you in September. I'm pulling for those of you deferred who handled it with grace, you sound like an amazing group.

You do know that being the child of the POTUS, is going to trump a lot of stuff including being a URM? It also won't hurt that they are legacies at Princeton and Columbia ;)

I read at some schools they have minority recruiters who look at minority students and decide whether they should be considered under different standards. I think it's to prevent "Huxtable" children from getting an unfair advantage when they've faced very little adversity.

Sybbie.. about your son's 150 points higher SAT.. have we not already established it is NOT all high scores. And about Obama... you made my point exactly. Hopefully that will become more and more the norm and not the exception.

So before I never post on this thread again:

I also don't believe I've ever whined about my son's rejection. While I've cautioned those who got in not to think they are so much better than their peers who were deferred or rejected, I have never suggested my son should have gotten in or that I didn't get how he could be rejected or that he deserved something more than you or anyone. ever. I have also said S was quite alright with not getting in -- actually surprisingly so -- and is just lamenting the rest of the applications he has to fill out.

For one who has chastised a number of posters on their reading comprehension ability, it seems as if you have misread my quore as I specifically said..

so it is safe to say that **she **got in on her own work

I have a daughter- Dartmouth Class of '08 (there were 38 Native American, 79 African-American, 72 hispanic 147 Asian and 630 white-nonhispanic students in her class).

I did not know what you were alluding to when you said maybe you should have had some URM children, but I was just putting it out there so that you would make no more wrong assumptions.

As to what? The Obama girls are going to be the children of the president (former president) so that is going to put them in a whole differnt category as other children of presidents, senators, celebrities -regardless of race. In addition, as I said, previously they are legacy kids (most of the legacy kids represented on this thread so far are not URMs).

Heyyy why have all of dartmouth's recent threads become arguments? This is just a decisions thread and a way to say congrats to everyone who got in! No point in taking a good general discussion to very pointed arguments about dartmouth's decisions for ourselves or people we know.

Sounds like it was a year of deferral for Dart...and now 16 weeks of waiting begins!

Just a lurker here. Correction: a shocked lurker.

If any of my impressions of Dartmouth came from this thread, do you have any sense of what those impressions might be?

Sybbie, did your daughter enjoy Dartmouth?

uhmmmm I wasn't talking about you Modadunn, I was actually referring to other threads in the Dartmouth ahahahha

This is really getting wayyyy too out of hand. I might have to retreat from CC for a few weeks and get my head straight. Best of luck to my fellow deferrals with other applications!

She had an amazing time. Studied abroad, lots of great friends, was part of the greek system, great professors. Misses Hanover a little but she and the gang did go up for homecoming and will probably go up for Green Key and to see her little sister graduate.

That is so great to hear! I knew nothing about Dartmouth until a few months ago when a rep came to my school. Then the alum that interviewed me made a big impression and I was sold. I have to admit this site started to scare me a little.

I really didn't mean to run anyone off but I couldn't not respond to some of the things written here.

I agree with vrs, because her general opinion is that it is not a random process as you and others seem to think. I qualified this statement by recognizing that there are many qualified applicants, and vrs has never denied this in what I read(I did not read ever post). Furthermore, agreeing with vrs, does not mean I specifically disagree with you (Mod) on everything you say. I admire the way your son has handled this, and your point that there are many qualified applicants who were not accepted is more than valid. However I disagree at least to some degree with anyone who says the process is random, because as I explained, there is a valid reason behind every decision. Just because there adcom could create 3 classes of equal qualifications does not mean the third that was accepted was chosen at random from the pool of applicants. Dartmouth especially seems to want to build a class of diverse interests, talents, and backgrounds, and will choose those applicants who will best allow them to do so.

According to the article referenced in an earlier post (Post #145), 26% of the 1550 ED applicants were accepted. Does anyone know the percentage of ED applicants who were deferred? In recent years, Columbia & Penn-other Ivies- have also had high rates of ED acceptances.

Furthermore, I'm a four year varsity letterman for LaCrosse, I received the music award for every year I played piano in Jazz Band, I was awarded the Bausch and Lomb prize for my achievement in science, I ran varsity XC senior year to try something new and participated in the Meet of Champions, I'm going to Honduras in February to help construct schools for the children living in desolate areas as my final project in the Interact Club at my school which I have been in since I was a freshman, I have taken German since 7th grade and spent five weeks on the Bodensee summer of Sophomore year as an exchange trip with my school and scored 3rd in New England on the AATG standardized German test, and other than that, there's not much else too me. Well roundedness for the win, (or FTW as my fellow PC gaming fanatics would say.)

Congratulations and thank you, Turbo, for actually posting admissions results :)

I am DENIED...

I am an international student from Hong Kong... though Dartmouth seldom admits hk students, I tried anyway... and the result is -- denied. And seems Dartmouth admits 3 mainland Chinese, deferred 5 and denied 22.

Have to say that I am saddened by the result... but later when I realised that my brother was deferred by Stanford, but later got admitted by Harvard, UPenn Wharton, Princeton and Cornell... then I cheer up :P

Congratulations to those who are admitted by Dartmouth.
Cheer up to those who deferred or denied. Everybody will end up somewhere suitable for you, and it's just a matter of time or serendipity = )

i know these things really helped me so here we go...
