are we supposed to get an email saying we’re under early notification???

^No, Otherwise I’m screwed

^^i think most people that got that e-mail were people who submitted their apps near or at the deadline

i have a 35, actually. oct scores aren’t really hitting me, i guess…

@ charlie
true it won’t help if you’re at the bottom of the range but my point is that if you are in the range there is no reason why your scores will “kill” you.

@kelsmom
thanks, thats such a relief i thought recalculating gpa was going to kill me

@jackdaniels…seriously? not recalculating gpa helps you?

my freshman grades are trash. my UM GPA would be 3.85 something if they recalculated.

alas =/. just my luck that they stopped recalculating this year, huh?

Not recalculating helps my son, too. His AP teachers are tough graders, and getting a little boost from weighting is helpful. Plus, his freshman grades are really good.

Charlieharper, an upward trend is considered a good thing.

Yeah it helps me so much, I got straight As in all honors classes my freshmen year, so it helps me so much haha. junior year, i didnt do so great /:

Hey OOS guys, have hope cause this guy got accepted with a 3.25 GPA last year and 2100 SAT from New Jersey. Unless they changed their admissions process dramatically, I say we all still have some kind of chance as long as we have other very compelling factors i guess lol.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/590450-official-university-michigan-decision-class-2013-a-18.html

I’m really surprised by this though. 3.75 is the average of admitted applicants and this is .50 below that! Also, according to the CollegeBoard this is within 6% of people admitted (in the GPA graph)

<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board;

wow that makes me feel A LOT better ^^ haha. But yeah, I’ve heard of kids getting in with 3.5 W and 32 ACT’s. I think your test scores can really offset that GPA if, for example, you get 32+ ACT or something similar. I’m from Jersey too and this gives me a little more hope lol.

thanks guys, that makes me feel a lot better

yeah my gpa should help me… 4.5 weighted

i have a 4.5 weighted too, is that considered good? how can they look at GPAs now that they don’t recalculate them, there’s not going to be any sort of comparison factor to determine what is “good” or not.

^ since most applicants are from Michigan schools, and almost all high schools in Michigan do not go over 4.0 in GPA wise, they compare out of state applicants differently with regards in GPA. Trust me, they know the difference when a school goes over the 4.0 mark and schools that don’t. A 4.5 may look good, but they know just what it represents.

Do people keep forgetting why weighted GPAs exist in the first place? To try and “adjust” for the supposed rigor of the classes. Since it is quite common to see weighted GPAs beyond 4.0, it kind of becomes pointless. Even though they are looking at unweighted grades, they are going to look at the curriculum you took, so they will see if you took a more rigorous schedule than others with a similar GPA. Weighted GPAs are too arbitrary anyways, What one class a school could give a 5.0 grade for an “A” in it another may only give it a 4.5 or simply not adjust it at all. By not considering weighted grades the influence comes directly from the student’s own efforts and determination, not from a high school trying to make it’s graduating class look as good as possible.

so what matters more is if we took all APs/honors rather then our gpa? and is rank going to be looked at much higher this year?
I’m top 5% of my class of 620, yet I got quite a few Bs. I just took really hard classes (like 12 APs to this point) Are they going to look at the individual grades I got and notice the Bs, or are they going to look at the GPA/rank and notice the rigor of the classes?

^ of course they are going to look at each individual grade as well as the course that you took. Everything will be considered so if you have a crappy GPA but take a lot of hard classes, the AO will take that into consideration. However, the most important thing is the trend in grades you have. A negative trend can drastically hurt your chances no matter what your gpa is.

I didn’t know trend had that much of an impact. I definitely have a negative trend but i took harder and harder classes every year. I guess we’ll see

^haha, same D:

yea i agree.
when i went to visit UMich they said they would rather accept someone who got a few B’s but took the hardest classes offered then someone who took general classes and received all A’s. They also look at if you’ve taken classes in your interest area.
For example: interested in engineering? they would hope you took math and science and not 8 language AP’s.
They also stated they judged schools, not just GPA number, some schools are competitive and some hand out A’s to every other student.
So if your GPA sucks because you took the extra step in the harder classes, then it was worth it and you still have a good chance.

GoBlue10, that’s good to hear because I have a 3.25, 2130 SAT and I’m from MA. So, very similar.

I applied EA and haven’t gotten a decision back yet.
