Official Class of 2020 Northeastern University Early Decion/Early Action Discussion

@Amrfootball The 40k is per year, plus the other 6k or so of tuition is covered by work study and a small loan  I donā€™t think I got into the Scholars program, at least it didnā€™t say anything I donā€™t think!

@dyu12345 yeah Iā€™ll def post shortly for you and anyone that would like em!

@ptkid16 did you apply separately for the scholarship or did they just give it to you?

Rejected

Major: Undeclared
GPA: 3.4W (2.8 freshman year, 3.4 sophomore year, 3.8 junior year, looking at about a 4.6 for senior year but thatā€™s not final yet), school doesnā€™t calculate UW but thatā€™s probably close to 3.2?
ACT: 33
APs: didnā€™t start taking any until senior year, but I am currently enrolled in AP Psych, AP Environmental Science and AP Art History
Extracurriculars: 3 years in mock trial, 2 years in art club, 2 years in book club, 1 year in clay club; 2 years of volunteering at a dog rescue, began working at a restaurant in August

Ughā€¦ sucks to think that one horrific year is probably what stopped meā€¦

@seniorsam123 sounds like ptkid16 received financial aid, not merit scholarships.

@suzyQ7 Would financial aid info be included this early? I though most of that didnā€™t come out until April?

The financial aid award is tentative based on CSS profile. May be adjusted after FAFSA is submitted after Jan 1.

They did ask for the CSS and I thought that was for a preliminary FA offer.

@seniorsam123 @suzyQ7 Itā€™s a combination of demonstrated need and academic achievement it said.

@ptkid16 Congratulations! Just to be clear, not saying that it wasnā€™t a wonderful accomplishment, but people often get confused on posts that say ā€˜scholarshipā€™ - that term is interchangeable with ā€˜merit scholarshipā€™ meaning not associated or related to need based aid. Its not normal for colleges to offer merit awards not related to financial need during the ED selection. Why would they? If you donā€™t qualify for need and are applying early decision, then you are saying you will attend, regardless of the price. They donā€™t need to sweeten the deal with merit only awards. When you are eligible for FA, they may mix the FA award with some merit dollarsā€¦but not an all merit award for ED.

^Lots of schools give merit aid to ED candidatesā€¦having nothing to do with FA.

^ Right, I didnā€™t make it clear whom I was replying to. Iā€™ve edited to address that.

@HRSMom really? That surprises meā€¦ why would they?

Best of luck EA applicants!!

Merit awards, including Scholars, and preliminary need based awards are made to ED and EA applicants. I do not believe any CCā€™er has posted that they received Scholars but only a small percentage of applicants frequent this site.

@suzyQ7 on some visits, this question has been asked. What I heard them say is that their standard for the Merit is what it is. If you qualify, great. It is not necessarily hurting you to go ED.

I even saw someone earlier in this thread got accepted with some merit $.

So while it seems odd bc we presume the $ is to entice you, I think at least some schools distribute it fairly, even if you are already committed!

@HRSMom Thanks. Too bad they donā€™t really quantify what that standard is - merit is somewhat holistic too.Iā€™ve seen huge ranges in merit awards from NEU threads - kids with high stats getting low merit and honors and kids with semi-high stats getting more merit and no honors, for example. I havenā€™t seen any posts that show exclusive merit - the ones in previous threads have said ā€œapplied for FAā€ = Yes.

It seems like a big risk applying ED if you are a strong contender for merit (stats wise - say 34 ACT & 3.9GPA) because there is no guarantee and then you are locked in. From all Iā€™ve read, merit is a way to ā€˜buy statsā€™ and entice high stat studentsā€¦ which is hard to reconcile with the fact that you are locked in with ED and theyā€™ve already ā€˜got youā€™.

@HRSMom @suzyQ7 Yeah, I think HRS mom is right because they said my familyā€™s EFC is 20k, but we calculated it and itā€™s a bit higher so itā€™s probably a combination of need and merit. So I think they were just being nice!

OMG the decisions came out? I applied EA but havenā€™t received anything yetā€¦ Which decisions came out? ED or EA?
